My taste has gone really weird. I can't put my finger on it but nothing tastes nice or right.

If you had a change in taste can you describe it?

Everything has been reduced to just texture. And it sucks

Moonsbury · 23/11/2020 21:53

Literally no taste atall, nor smell.
Food and drink all boring and couldn't really be bothered to eat without being able to even identify flavour- felt crap anyway so wasn't bothered by not eating.
But this lasted nearly a month.

Jeez ok. I can definitely vaguely taste something. Like just there I brushed my teeth and I have a hint of toothpaste bit absolutely nothing like what normal would be.
I had a glass of wine and stopped after two mouthfuls as it was just so weird tasting.
I can still smell though maybe not as strong.
Slice of carrot cake o stopped after two mouthfuls as it just wasn't right. Hmm maybe I'll do a test.
I do see though one tonsil looks bigger than the other. I was wondering if maybe food had stuck in a part of it or something but got husband to look and he didn't see anything.

Now I say this with the disclaimer that I'm not 100% sure I had the virus as it was late December to early January but do know others ill the same time who had antibody tests which were +ve. I also had all the symptoms and my GP is convinced I had it.
I cook Christmas dinner every year, I love it. I spend two days making the gravy. Literally 2 days, from scratch.
Last year I knew I felt rough as a very rough thing but carried on when really I wanted to curl up under a duvet and shiver and sweat all day.
This gravy tasted like water. I was so unwell I got really stupid upset over it (you know how it is when you're ill) because I couldn't understand why the whole lot tasted of nothing at all. DP kept laughing saying I was being ridiculous as it was lovely, it didn't taste of nothing and was tasty as always but I thought he was being polite as I was so tearful and overwhelmed.
Now I think, I could've bitten a chilli and had no worries of my mouth burning off.
Took about a fortnight before I started to taste strong flavours again then about another fortnight to come back completely
Was bloody vile.

Since having Covid a month ago my taste is definitely muted. However it's the constant smell of burning or dirty ashtrays that's really getting me down. Haven't smelt anything nice for ages!

Horehound · 23/11/2020 22:42

Aw @MillieVanilla I'm sure your gravy was just lovely. Such a shame you never tasted it. You'll have to make up for it this year hehe.

Hmm ok i have booked a test. Taste is definitely muted and the guide does say "loss or change".
Uft I'm already fed up and its only been two days

Similar to some experiences above - could smell strong burnt toast most of the time (this also happened to me in early pregnancy). Not everything changed its taste hugely but I wasn't eating much and didn't want anything. Coffee had no taste. Fancied a hot cross bun, chewed it and it was just horrible. Mostly pappy nothing, with a very metallic and non-food overtone.

This, though, came a week after being theatrically ill with something that made me sick after anything, even tiny sips of water, bad abdominal issues, and racing heart for days.

Horehound · 24/11/2020 14:08

I've deffo had the metallic taste.

I did my test this morning at a drive through centre so let's see! Hope I don't have to wait long!

Negative.

And now I have stuffy nose and sore throat so guess it's a cold but I've never had taste loss before!
