If hotels and holiday homes opened in December would you go?

I thought hotels and self catering stays opened after the 2nd of December ? We are booked to go away for Christmas so I hope that can still go ahead.

onyourway · 23/11/2020 08:04

I'm hoping I can stay in a hotel when I pick up dc from uni, as it's way too far to get there and back in a day.
Not sure a night stop in a Travelodge counts as a holiday, though!

rookiemere · 23/11/2020 08:08

Interesting how a specific question was asked "Would YOU go on holiday " but the poster choosing not to go instead lectures us on travel during pandemic. It's really not a good way to change hearts and minds you know.
If the poster had said - No I'm not going anywhere until coronavirus cases are much lower and now the vaccines on the horizon, hopefully we'll all be able to go away in 2021, so why don't wait until then - then maybe that would give people pause for thought. But another lecture- nah- I'm good thanks.

EwwSprouts · 23/11/2020 08:09

I would stay in a holiday cottage as that's still just us and would go out for a meal. Wouldn't stay in a hotel as too many people milling around.

MaryShelley1818 · 23/11/2020 08:15

Yes! We have a 1nt hotel stay booked mid-December for my little boys Birthday. All he wants is a "picnic" in a hotel room with a swimming pool. We've booked a day in a local zoo while there and evening at Illuminations - all outdoor activities. Really hoping we get to do this.
Plus the zoos need our support at this time, they're really struggling.

@trappedsincesundaymorn
Oh I’m so sorry.
That’s just awfu.
I do hope you get your break...and soon.
We were never meant to live like this and the effects on our mental health is just criminal.

I had a very bad mental health problem over 40 years ago that took me several years to right myself.
I never thought I had a problem again until I ended up feeling powerless when all my coping strategies were taken away.

I make no apologies for leading my life as normally as possible throughout his and even so have only just managed to keep afloat.
I think what has had loved me enormously is I have a dh who is always on an even keel and my children have just got on with their lives l their partners the same and their children.
My son is a carer and odp student and has worked continually throughout, he’s even with covid patients , and my dd has continued to home educate and swim in the sea and paddle board.
My son and his family have had no holiday and my dds have had about 5 days camping.

PurBal · 23/11/2020 08:19

We've had one booked since before COVID-19 took hold (January). We want to go as it will be the first and last Christmas just the two of us. But if we can't, we can't.

Dowser · 23/11/2020 08:19

Loved me? Helped me!

JustMeAndMyTins · 23/11/2020 08:23

I would.

starfish4 · 23/11/2020 08:35

We were away when lockdown was announced, so where the last guests to check in, so yes. Have to admit we do go around sanitizing touch points, worktops on arrival and extra careful with handwashing.

If those places are open, then the government have to accept travel. Have to say when we went away, we chose something in the same tier as ourselves so no one was at an increased risk either end.

Alarae · 23/11/2020 08:37

We have a hotel booked over Christmas to see family as I don't want to 'kick' my mum and stepdad to the cabin in the garden (she would happily do it but I feel bad).

Will have to see what the restrictions are though as may not be able to meet regardless.

BrokenBrit · 23/11/2020 08:41

No, I love U.K. breaks but not really in the winter as I don’t enjoy city breaks. We currently live near beautiful countryside within walking distance, so I would rather we stay here than risk travelling in snow and ice, which I hate driving in.
Regarding covid, I would go to a self contained holiday rental, and did a couple of times in the summer.
I probably wouldn’t go to a hotel, but again I wouldn’t anyway so it’s a bit of a moot point. I hope to next get away late spring.

Hardbackwriter · 23/11/2020 08:53

We've gone away to the Norfolk coast with my parents, my DB and DSIL and a growing number of babies and toddlers for the last four years, and we'd all so love to do it this year - but I don't see it happening, it's six adults plus three children so I can't imagine it'll be allowed. I'd be a bit cautious about it if it were allowed; everyone else involved (especially my parents) would be very gung ho for it!

joystir59 · 23/11/2020 08:56

Have booked two days mid Dec in a hotel in another town where I plan to visit very close friend and big provider of support to me- I'm recently bereaved. I can cancel without penalty but I do really want to go.

thecatneuterer · 23/11/2020 08:56

I normally go away a couple of weeks before Christmas (commemorating anniversary). I would still like to go (UK), but am concerned that everything will be closed so it wouldn't be much fun. We may still end up booking last minute though (I fancy Bath this year).

tengingers · 23/11/2020 09:07

We have a one night stay in a city close to us, just dh and I, a few nights after lockdown ends. We also have a night booked as a family between Christmas and new year. We will go to both if allowed. As long as the hotel is covid secure and we practise good hygiene I don't see a problem.

Madcats · 23/11/2020 10:07

No. Both sets of parents are elderly and we live in a Uni town where cases are going up and up.

Food and drink is a big part of a hotel or holiday rental. I don't fancy risking that pubs and restaurants are alll closed apart from Starbucks and McD. We'll probably eat out in a local independent restaurant/hotel in December if they are able to open.

I am feeling optimistic about a short break in Cornwall just before Easter (already rescheduled twice).

FraughtwithGin · 23/11/2020 13:17

I have a hair appointment on 11th December and was planning to have a long weekend in the city, where my hairdresser is, should we have come out of lockdown on 1st December as originally stated (not UK).
However, it now looks as if our "lockdown light" will be extended to 20th December, so I am glad I didn't book anything. It will be a day trip instead.
I have stayed at 2 (different) hotels since May 4th, but the experiences were nowhere near as enjoyable as under "normal" circumstances, although 1 was a lot better than the other.
To be honest, apart from trips for haircuts (once every 4 to 6 weeks) and shopping once a week, I have not been anywhere since 12th March. I live alone, it is getting boring.

JamonCroissant · 23/11/2020 18:26

It doesn't look like they will in Tier 3 areas.

However, it isn't clear at all what the rules are if the holiday home is in a low tier area but you are coming from a high tier area 🤔

CheltenhamLady · 24/11/2020 11:18

It won't be happening now. I think most places will be in tier 3, a national lockdown by another name. Really fed up.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/11/2020 13:14

I'm not giving up yet. Until the tiers are announced I'm planning on going away and I can't bloody wait for a change of scenery! If we can't go because of the tiers I'm going to move it to another date - I'll get there one day!

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 24/11/2020 13:24

Me too pink. I’m really hoping they just do tier 1/2 for 90% of the country

RegularHumanBartender · 24/11/2020 13:29

My answer is the same as it was on the last thread. Yes, absolutely yes. We have been away lots of times this year and will do so in December if we can.

CheltenhamLady · 24/11/2020 13:49

So am I, but I think it is far more likely 75% will be in tier 3.
