Telegraph tomorrow, Christmas relaxed

MummaPI · 20/11/2020 23:48

Just seen the front page on the telegraph but can't read online with subscribing.
Says Boris to announce Christmas rules next week but likely to be 21st-28th.
My first thought was "I don't normally see people every day for this long at Christmas anyway!!" Grin
If anyone can read it and add more info, that would be great. I know its nothing definite but there has been a habit of leaving to the press before announcing.

I will be doing Christmas Day and Boxing Day and only 6 people. Thats all ive been asking for. No more.

SheepandCow · 21/11/2020 00:19

Rich right wingers and papers like the telegraph have been anti restrictions from the start. They think they're safe because it's poorer people who are most at risk.

PullTheBricksDown · 21/11/2020 00:31

Yet another important announcement of national policy made via a newspaper website with a paywall. This government behaves disgracefully.

Igglepiggle78 · 21/11/2020 00:41

If so, how will we pay for it afterwards? A month long lockdown? It’s a joke and a runaway train now, we’re screwed.

MummaPI · 21/11/2020 00:47

Yes I agree, its too much if it is to be believed.

Yup!
Holothane · 21/11/2020 00:49

This had better not be true, we’re going no where parents not coming to us, well my in-laws. January is grim at the best of times even more so this year, because people will get drunk and won’t care. Sorry if I’m a grumpy git

That's what I want to know too. I can't cope with much more lockdown. I don't want massive relaxation at Christmas in return for more lockdown. I usually visit very close friends for New year and we exchange Christmas presents and have our celebration of Christmas. I can do that if we have the rule of 6 back. I can't if we're in lockdown again.
SheepandCow · 21/11/2020 00:55

It's not just lockdown we'd pay for it with.
The experts have warned it could cause tens of thousands more avoidable deaths.

I'd say we've had quite enough losses already. From the guardian:

More than 70,000 deaths involving Covid-19 have now occurred in the UK, new figures show.

DumplingsAndStew · 21/11/2020 00:59

8 days of Christmas? So that's just short of 6 weeks of heavy restrictions enforced to attempt to mitigate it (assuming at the announced 5 days per day of relaxation)

I really hope Scotland doesn't plan anything so stupid and selfish.

MummaPI · 21/11/2020 00:59

Yet the government fails to see all this! Most of us have accepted a smaller, different Christmas and yet a 7 day families together scenario.
Let's hope its wrong, it says discussions with Scotland, Ireland and Wales so we all do the same. I'd be really surprised if they all agreed to something like this when they have been way more strict than us.

‘’it says discussions with Scotland, Ireland and Wales so we all do the same’’

Why would Ireland agree to same as UK ? I am being facetious of course and presume you mean Northern Ireland.

WitchesSpelleas · 21/11/2020 01:11

Scotland, NI and Wales have been so much more sensible than England all through this pandemic.

Isthatitnow · 21/11/2020 01:17

FFS. One day is all it needs. Two at most. All that’s going to happen is 7 days of madness and the people who will pay for that are NHS and school staff who will be infected upon return to school in January.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/11/2020 01:21

Good luck for the resultant February to April lockdown then.

It is not an important announcement of policy though.
If you are just worried about this article being behind a paywall, all tabloids are "reporting' this too. They all have been for days with the only difference today being that it is to be for a whole week instead of 5 days. These aren't official announcements. The announcement won't be made until after the 4 nations of the UK have their meeting this week (Wednesday?) and the Govt have a few days more figures to be certain that the latest restrictions have worked.

Igglepiggle78 · 21/11/2020 08:42

It’s being proven more and more that lockdown doesn’t work, none of this done, we’re heading into a very dark place

AethelsWhiteGoose · 21/11/2020 08:46

Crazy, why risk death or illness for one Christmas when a vaccine is so close? And I am someone who loves a big Christmas usually.

Arosadra · 21/11/2020 08:47

Fucking hell. Some people work Christmas while everyone else is having this jolly and won’t be able to see family at new year instead.

starfish4 · 21/11/2020 08:51

The cost in terms of health, lives, pressure on NHS, further lockdown just puts me off Xmas all together. I bet most of those who feel able to have a long or large celebration will want to do sales shopping or have children back at school a week later - it doesn't bear thinking about.

Either way, it's going to be simple here, just the three of us. We're trying to get our heads around having my Mum, but one at a school and two in retail isn't great.

For anyone who wants to celebrate, it's fair enough say having three days as many will have to work at some point over 25/26, but not that length of time.

DarceyDashwood · 21/11/2020 09:14

Surely this can’t be true? What’s wrong with Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day (at the most). And needs to be small numbers. My heart is sinking at the thought of the free for all’s over Xmas by all the selfish tits out there.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 21/11/2020 09:38

I really really hope not plus can’t imagine Scotland etc agreeing to it as they have been much stricter. The virus won’t suddenly know it’s Christmas and take a break and many that didn’t want the holiday nor mixed will end up paying for it either through the economy or their health.

Ted27 · 21/11/2020 09:43

Even if there is a ‘Christmas break’ its not compulsory to spend 7 days with your family having wild parties

Its a window - I would probably go to my parents one day, come back the next and carry on with an otherwise quiet Christmas
