SIL positive but hasn’t been anywhere

My sister in law tested positive for COVID yesterday but lives alone. She has only been to the supermarket and out for walks alone in the past few weeks. Trying to work out how on earth str could have caught it! We did see her about ten days ago but we are a family of five and none of us have had any symptoms. We have also been in school/seen other family members who are older and none of them have symptoms. I would have thought if it was us, someone somewhere would have had symptoms from our wider circle. How on earth could she have caught it at a supermarket or on a walk?

I am a teacher and my kids are in school too with no known cases in either of our schools yet.

Kids are very often asymptomatic and SOME adults are. If we could ever know for sure, my money would be on this being the route.

If she lives in a flat, the communal hall / stairs might be badly ventilated and someone could have been coughing in them extensively then gone into their flat, then she could come out and walk through (and inhale) their respiratory droplets. IIRC in New Zealand there was a case where a quarantined visitor (positive but didn't know it at the time) was in a lift and a member of staff got in directly after they'd got off and caught it by breathing in their exhaled air.

@Keepdistance

Are you england? As 10d ago already in lockdown and basic rules are no meeting inside or out. (Except 121 excercise and support bubbls)

I dont know if you gave it to her but, given the kids and you teaching its high risk meeting indoors.
If i were her i would be wearing a mask in the flat communal areas.

Also from the thread about if people would keep kids in for th e 2w there were comnents like
1 taking the isolating kid in the supermarket!
several to the park
1 letting the toddler run up and down the hall of the flats
Others take isolating kids in the car with them and on school runs

Others send kids to school with positive tests
With family with positive or symptoms

And there was also a thread where someone was concerned about a coughing supernarket till person and they had just come back after covid and also werent wearing mask right.

So yes it could be from lots of places

Yes we are in England. But she lives alone so perfectly allowed. She doesn’t see anyone else and is emotionally vulnerable, hence continuing to see her. We have however been limiting our visits due to lockdown and have only seen her once since lockdown started, so I do maintain she has been unlucky. But I appreciate it only takes the one exposure.

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay

So she hasn’t been anywhere except an indoor public place and seen family with school age children within the last 14 days.

You’re right OP it’s a mystery.

Yeah. Totally mystifying. Hmm
Lovemusic33 · 20/11/2020 10:46

She must have caught it from the supermarket. If you think about it, people are touching things and putting them back, lots of people touch their masks when going around supermarkets so despite using gel when they go in they are still spreading germs. Unless she had stayed in 24/7 then of course it’s possible to catch it.

Thatwentbadly · 20/11/2020 10:47

Supermarkets are the largest place of infection at moment.

musicposy · 20/11/2020 10:48

I’ve just had the most horrible stomach bug with a splitting headache and temperature, which I’m still waiting to hear whether it’s Covid. DD now has it.

The ONLY place I’ve been is dog walking. We’ve had a supermarket delivery, but other than that we’ve completely isolated, followed the rules to the letter, and I always wash my hands really thoroughly after coming in from the dog walks. How on earth I’ve caught anything is totally beyond me.

I’m guessing you can just be unlucky.

Blossomhill4 · 20/11/2020 10:49

Your SIL obviously caught it from someone with no symptoms from what you have put OP. She’s not been shielding so basically it could be from any where.

lljkk · 20/11/2020 10:49

She spent a long time with your family, OP.

Retiremental · 20/11/2020 10:49

@Angrymum22

Oh and isn’t it funny how infection rates have steadily climbed since masks became mandatory.
Nothing to do with the fact that wee were all in a strict lockdown and schools were shut back in ye old pre mask days? Hmm I suppose Bill Gates owns all the mask makers in the world too Wink
LindaEllen · 20/11/2020 10:51

This is a really weird thread.

  • She's been to the supermarket
  • She's seen you and your many children in the past 14 days
  • She lives in a flat with communal corridors that she's been in

ALL of those things could have caused an infection, and it is almost certain to be one of those.

There is no mystery here.

Your thread title is misleading, saying she hasn't been anywhere when she quite clearly has.

Crakeandoryx · 20/11/2020 10:52

Supermarkets are a great place to spread covid.

ChanklyBore · 20/11/2020 10:55

If your family saw her ten days ago, that would mean you are her support bubble, so you should all be isolating now as one of your bubble tested positive - are you isolating? Sorry if I missed the information. I have a support bubble with a vulnerable single adult and am very aware they if they catch it somewhere it will take put our whole household for work and school etc, so am trying to strike a happy balance. I’m also very aware that the bubble system for vulnerable adults is flawed in the case of a positive test as the people who are taking care of that adult suddenly can’t actually do so, as they live elsewhere and aren’t allowed to leave the house.

Crakeandoryx · 20/11/2020 10:55

I live in a high risk area and a lot of houses are getting it. Their main contacts are through schools and food shopping.

👍 I honestly wonder how some of these people get through the day 🙄
Doggybiccys · 20/11/2020 10:56

@Imateachergetmeoutofhere

So lots of people think from within the family. I’m just surprised that out of five of us, no one is showing symptoms. And no further cases within any of our schools. But I do appreciate it’s possible. Equally the supermarket scenario.
You are family of 5 but DC are very unlikely to show symptoms. My DH's friend tested positive after a close contact (his wife, a nurse) tested positive. DW had minor symptoms but friend said he had never felt so good in his life!
PrivateD00r · 20/11/2020 10:56

Your title is incredibly misleading. Why are you saying in your title that she hasn't been anywhere?

Anyway, its irrelevant as she has got it and just needs to worry about recovering. Please do keep in touch with her every day, I tested positive 3 weeks and despite living with dh and dc, I felt really isolated and was grateful for all the texts I received. I also was really touched to receive a delivery of flowers from a friend.

I hope she has a quick recovery Flowers

Spot on!!

ifonly4 · 20/11/2020 10:57

She's been in a public place and had visitors, which both create risks.

Bumble84 · 20/11/2020 10:58

I’m shocked that you’re shocked that she has caught it after being in the supermarket and seeing a family of five.

Do you think the people that are catching it are just the ones who are out in multiple places everyday? Even if you don’t leave the front door you could pick it up from a delivery

I think I’m just a bit hardened to it, due to the nature of my job. We’ve been lucky enough not to have any staff test positive yet, despite cases back in the summer. As were mixing day to day with no masks or social distancing, I struggle to marry that with people catching it in supermarkets while wearing masks. I do think it’s very unlikely and unlucky to do so!
OP posts:
outofthemoon · 20/11/2020 11:00

Without much doubt, she caught it from your family. I know a person in exactly similar circumstances. Asymptomatic and long incubation time. I hope she's ok soon.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 20/11/2020 11:01

well this thread has pushed me to call the Aldi I was at yesterday where the manager was wearing his mask under his nose. When I pointed it out, he shrugged and walked off.

I wouldn’t be shocked if we had symptoms. I’m shocked that she is feeling so poorly, when it doesn’t seem that we have it. I still maintain it’s unlikely that out of two adults and three children, that none of us would have had symptoms. Or that anyone in our schools would have. We literally have had no cases in any of them since summer. We live in quite a low risk area, but this is clearly on the up
