Awful cough after negative test

A colleague who had been isolating since Monday after developing a cough returned to work today following a negative test result. I thought that was against the rules but it turned out she had an awful cough still! Not persistent as such but when it came I'd never heard anything like it in my life! She was sent home after a few hours but I had sat about 2m away from her for some of that time - not face to face, sort of behind her.

I'm so anxious now and angry as well. Why would anyone do that?

Sorry I'm confused if she had a negative result why is it against the rule?

eShe's proper poorly by the sound of it but not covid as she's had a negative result. Sounds like she's needing some proper rest.

He's self isolating as he came into contact with a positive case so it is totally different.

Symptoms -- test - negative result = can go back to work immediately.

Been traced as a contact of someone who's tested positive = stay at home for 14 days regardless of negative test as the theory is you could test negative but then develop symptoms at some ookt after so you have to isolate 2 weeks.

She's done nothing wrong. She can be at work

You are correct. You are supposed to stay at home until symptoms clear. same as with any infectious illness.

There have been positive cases where we work but she's not a close contact apparently. She will have been near though, we all have. I just think why come in coughing over everywhere in these circumstances? It was a bloody nasty cough and not one to spread around, Covid or not.

She has a negative test. She is doing nothing wrong. The text or email you get says you don’t have to continue to isolate if you were isolating because of symptoms.

It's alright saying simmer down - who wants to sit next to someone coughing their head off like a sealion during a pandemic? Everyone here would be fine with it apparently. I'm angry, yes. I've also read about false negatives, so that's another worry.

Negative test, you go back to work if you feel well. DD had a horrific cough for 7 weeks this time last year, never heard anything like it. She was well enough in herself but school kept sending her home because it sounded so awful. Many GP appointments and even a trip to the hospital to get checked out. It was post nasal drip. If that had happened this year I dread to think how people would have reacted.

Shes done nothing wrong! She's had a test it was negative. People did cough before covid you know!
I've got a terrible cough, I'm asthmatic I cough all the time sometimes quite badly, I was tested and was negative I feel well enough to resume to work and normal life despite the bad cough.

Absolutely this I’ve got a dreadful chest infection which makes people look round , I’m now on antibiotics, if her test was negative I don’t see the problem, she probably has a dreadful chesty / infection cold like me Don’t make her feel like shit please , my manager did this , I’ve had the bad chest for a month , I don’t want to go back to work if I’ve still got the cold as I know she’ll be a bully about it but SSP only goes so far

Come on. Who can afford to stay off work every time they’ve got a cold? I would literally miss half the school year.

There is a difference between coughing several months after testing negative and a few days afterwards.

The NHS do say if you are still exhibiting symptoms you should stay home. Partly because of false tests. partly out of acknowledgement that no one wants another illness also being passed around.

Thank you, Piggy. Who wants to sit at home for a few days, maybe with family having to self-isolate too, worrying that it may be Covid, just because someone couldn't stay home a couple more days?

With a negative test, yes I’d be fine with that.
