Month long lockdown to 'pay' for 5 days over Christmas

NotAKaren · 18/11/2020 18:03

PHE have confirmed Sage advice that for every one day of relaxation over Christmas would require 5 days of restrictions afterwards. So for 5 days relaxation, which is rumoured to be what the government have in mind, would mean 25 days of restrictions. Is it really worth it?

MillyA- they've not announced what's happening on 2 Dec but they've been very careful not to say it will definitely end. Fingers crossed that you can go back to work

TragedyHands · 18/11/2020 20:54

It's all a load of bullshit, awful dystopian times.
I'm seeing mine all 9 of us, including 2 kids.

tootyfruitypickle · 18/11/2020 20:56

People who don’t give a shit will do what they want regardless , so no point adjusting rules to try and second guess those folk.

Spinakker · 18/11/2020 20:58

We shouldn't be locked down at all now. We were locked down at Eid as well, I'm not sure how that's fair to allow some festivals and not others.

Yep agree and there’s many who do follow guidance. Don’t pander to the outliers who do whatever.
Inastatus · 18/11/2020 20:59

I’d happily skip a large Christmas gathering - I have no family other than DH and 2 DC but we had planned to see friends. However, I know that for many many people, this could be the last Christmas they ever get to spend with their loved ones and there may not be a next year.

I don't blame you one bit.

Sadly the government have used up much of the publics 'good will' to obey by the rules.

I second a PP who said it's their fault that the hospitals can't cope, not ours. They've abused the NHS for too long.

KrisKringlesLeftNostril · 18/11/2020 21:05

No.
And considering the gov didn't give a shit that they restricted a large section of the country from seeing their families over Eid at the last minute, it's also quite galling.

onedayinthefuture · 18/11/2020 21:05

A month long lockdown probably makes more sense in January anyway. Let people have their Christmas. And bloody hurry up vaccine!

Livelovebehappy · 18/11/2020 21:07

Why are people comparing Eid with Christmas? Christmas has always been a celebration in the U.K., - a Christian tradition celebrated by the majority of the country. Eid is important to the Muslim community, but it’s not a traditional celebration for the majority, we are not a Muslim country, so it’s an irrelevant comparison.

HelgaDownUnder · 18/11/2020 21:07

Given how shakey the evidence is regarding lockdown, I find it impossible to believe there is a reliable algorithm to predict how many days of lockdown will be required to 'pay' for Christmas relaxation. And I'm pretty sure the Australian media showed Boris J boasting the current lockdown would 'save' Christmas, which seems to be the recollection of many other posters.

At this point, surely, there is smoke being blown up the collective backside.

It doesn't directly effect me in Australia, other than I feel it's so wrong for leaders to mess with everyone like this.

Christmas is so important. People have been putting up lights and decorations for months, as it seems like the only bright spot in the despair of 2020.

I feel so angry for you I can cry at the injustice. If they set out to break the national spirit and divide the population, they couldn't have come up with a better plan. Is there anyone left who believes that things will ever going back to normal?

KrisKringlesLeftNostril · 18/11/2020 21:08

@Didyousaynutella

I don’t think you can compare to Diwali or Eid. At the end of the day we are a predominantly Christian/secular country and most of the population celebrates Christmas ( religious or not) ! Our calendar is based around it. It’s totally different!
You can compare to Easter, though. Which we were in lockdown for, and is the more important time for practising Christians.

I think a LOT of people are rather looking forward to having an excuse not to visit the in laws, though!

Lumene · 18/11/2020 21:08

No. Maybe 1 or 2 days for 5 or 10 lockdown.

But people will do it anyway.

Because they think being woke gives them popularity points and a free pass to heaven.

MrsExpo · 18/11/2020 21:10

Absolutely not. Just stay home this year and let’s get this thing over with.

userxx · 18/11/2020 21:10

Fuck that.

It's not about the celebration as such- more that very little consideration was given. They announced a restriction on travel and mixing at 9pm the night before a very major celebration for a significant amount of people in this country. I would be a little bit pissed off, if I had already made all the preparations and a ban was announced at 9pm on December 23rd or 24th.
newwnamme · 18/11/2020 21:12

Meh. People who are worried will stay distanced regardless. People who are bored and not concerned will follow the plans they have likely already made. Is anyone still actually listening to what the government have to say?

I'm in the latter camp. Plans for Christmas have been made for some time and, so long as we all remain healthy, won't be changing regardless of what is announced on the 2nd.

PrincessNutNuts · 18/11/2020 21:12

What about if we choose?

You can have your normal Christmas plus a month of lockdown if you want.

Or you can limit Christmas a bit this year and not have another month on Lockdown

I pick option 2.

Hairwizard · 18/11/2020 21:15

They can all fuck off to the far side of fuck. And then some more.
Business as usual here for me. Christmas too.
No where should be locked down at all. Its a fucking joke. Anyone still thinking this is about a fucking virus at this point needs to give their heads a wobble.
Only on fucking mumsnet am i seeing people agreeing with this shit show.

SimoneLeBone · 18/11/2020 21:15

I haven't RTFT, unusually, as this is all too much.

OP, it is not worth it. If anyone thinks otherwise, they should try being one of the people who has paid tax for 25 years and who now has no taxable income as a result of Covid measures.

Sickofmysalary · 18/11/2020 21:16

So many people will just do what they want anyway!

BeigeFoodLover · 18/11/2020 21:16

@MrsExpo

Absolutely not. Just stay home this year and let’s get this thing over with.
Isn’t that what was meant to happen in March/April? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve lost too many people over the last 18 months to wait for it all to get better.

SimoneLeBone · 18/11/2020 21:16

Oh, and Christmas is the very, very, very last thing I'm worried about. I'm far more worried about keeping my house, for the sake of my children. I couldn't care less about Christmas.

WitsEnding · 18/11/2020 21:17

It’s not worth it and I’m not doing it. I will channel my inner Grinch and stay home.

Time to celebrate when we come out of lockdown properly.
