Month long lockdown to 'pay' for 5 days over Christmas

NotAKaren · 18/11/2020 18:03

PHE have confirmed Sage advice that for every one day of relaxation over Christmas would require 5 days of restrictions afterwards. So for 5 days relaxation, which is rumoured to be what the government have in mind, would mean 25 days of restrictions. Is it really worth it?

The month long lockdown will be to ensure that Cheltenham 2021 still happens in March. Last years going ahead was the reason for the late lockdown. How thick do they think we are.

If i dont get to see my family at Christmas after the rich fuckers had they ski trips and their Cheltenham and their summer holidays i am FUCKING DONE!

Stellaris22 · 18/11/2020 19:26

Do people no longer care about the economy, job losses etc? Or is it now ok for other people to lose their house and suffer financially just so people can have a fancy roast dinner together?

IrkedEssex · 18/11/2020 19:27

@bathsh3ba

I heard them say 2 days at the press briefing. Apparently PHE then had to issue a statement saying that was incorrect, and that Sage had said 5 days of tougher restrictions for every day of relaxation.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 19:27

I thought the month long lockdown we are having NOW was to enable Christmas. More fucking gaslighting and emotional blackmail

Northernmum100 · 18/11/2020 19:27

Absolutely crackers. Not for even one day. I am a key worker and worked throughout so in reality, my life has carried on as normal except for changes in work practices etc. The impact of lockdown on friends and family though has been enormous and I am not sure how they will cope if it keeps being extended.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 19:29

@Stellaris22 Christmas IS a part of the economy. I still have the receipts for the gifts i have bought. No point buying gifts for a Christmas that wont happen,

No party dresses are being bought because no parties. Taxis sitting in a field in Essex and taxi drivers quitting because the job is no longer worth it.

itsgettingweird · 18/11/2020 19:31

I agree it's a huge payoff.

I'm desperate to spend Christmas with my parents, my siblings and DN as it's very likely my mums last one as she has terminal cancer.

But that's such a huge payoff.

I would prefer more restrictions and being able to see her more often afterwards.

Currently under this lockdown I can't see her at all. 5 days is a huge payoff if the alternative is looser restrictions (eg 2 households indoors) for a few months on end.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 19:31

If elderly people are left on their own on Christmas Day an employed carer may well have to go in instead. If a vulnerable person is left alone and something happens there is your next scandal.

Lindy2 · 18/11/2020 19:31

Sage had said 5 days of tougher restrictions for every day of relaxation.

I wonder how many extra cases and deaths there will be for every day of relaxation.

It's just not worth it. The vaccines seem to be so close to being ready. I'd rather hold on until I know we can be together and be safer. Hopefully Easter can be the big get together time instead.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 19:32

But this will drag on and on because they keep giving contracts to their rich mates.

MercyBooth · 18/11/2020 19:33

this is manipulation and emotional blackmail. Didnt see much of that when they were discussing travel corridors for their holibobs

DitherFlicker · 18/11/2020 19:33

No not worth it. Really fed up on behalf of children and young people that sport and other out of school activities are banned. Well managed and risk assessed sports and activities cannot be allowed to go ahead, but the government will probably authorise widespread shopping and hospitality in Dec...followed by five days of mixing, socialising and drinking over Christmas. For which we will pay with yet another month ban on grassroots sport and children's activities. Surely we can just celebrate in our own households, with extra bubbling allowed for grandparents or friends/relatives who would otherwise be alone?

efc1878 · 18/11/2020 19:34

What about all the NHS, key workers etc who will be working over the 5 day Christmas period and then on their time off be thrown into a full lockdown?

lockeddownandcrazy · 18/11/2020 19:35

It would have to be a week to encompass new year as many people will just go out and party on nye anyway, so a 7 day 'free' period for a month of lockdown - def not worth it

SomewhereEast · 18/11/2020 19:39

If its a choice between a month's lockdown and a 'family' Christmas, they can fire Christmas into the sun as far as I'm concerned. I don't think we should wank the economy up the wall so I can eat over-cooked turkey at the mother-in-law's. But the Gov know most people won't bother with the rules at Christmas, so they'll relax them to safe face

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 18/11/2020 19:39

It doesn’t bare thinking about. It will be awful. That’s without factoring in new year and alcohol.

Some obviously either aren’t thinking about it just their own wants or worse, they don’t care.

Stellaris22 · 18/11/2020 19:40

Nowhere near as tough as NHS workers, but I am supermarket staff and will be working throughout Christmas (Boxing Day and Christmas Eve). To be doing this knowing we're going into a lockdown with school closures because of selfish people is going to be hard.

NotAKaren · 18/11/2020 19:41

@SomewhereEast My thoughts exactly Grin

I dont do NY and i dont drink Im teetotal and ive never been drunk. In fact everyone should stop drinking altogether Lets see how serious everyone is about protecting the NHS.

PrincessNutNuts · 18/11/2020 19:42

My personal preference would be to allow the rule of 6 indoors for two days so that no one needs to be alone who doesn't want to be.

And for one year we all do our best within our own individual families to make it work.

For the good of our country and to save lives...

In the spirit of Christmas...

Exactly
Therollockingrogue · 18/11/2020 19:44

No no no no no.
No and no.
NOOOOOOOo!
Please No.

NotAKaren · 18/11/2020 19:44

@Stellaris22 This is a really hard time for retail staff in normal Christmas years but this year could be more difficult. The Boxing Day sales combined with relaxing of restrictions doesn't bare thinking about.

@PrincessNutNuts Carrie is that you?

it's a bit like the psychology of dieting isnt it. You are on a diet, really want to lose weight. You're sticking to the rules and its all going well. You decide to carry on dieting over Christmas - chances are you will slip up at some point. So then the "oh well, sod it I've broken the diet now, may as well just give up and eat what I want forever." Versus the other option - your diet is going well, you decide to give yourself 5 days off dieting over Christmas to eat yummy food, but you have a date on which you will get back to sticking to the rules - longer term this approach is much more likely to be sucessful.
