Is a change beginning to happen regarding schools?

I’ve been noticing more articles lately in the mainstream press about the difficulties in schools (which will come as no surprise to most people). There’s also been some research which has basically confirmed that schools are driving infections. So, along with it looking like this lockdown has been a waste of time (due to schools being kept open to continue the spread) and people in power calling for Hull schools to be closed do we think that schools will be closing early for Christmas?

Is there any chance that blended learning or rotas will be coming in after the Christmas holidays?

We are a vulnerable family with children in primary school and the risk that sending them every day with no safety measures poses to our family is causing me huge amounts of stress.

I learned today that we have 2 X KS4 students off with long Covid.
One of them was a member of the school football team as well, so fit and healthy...

WhyNotMe40 · 24/11/2020 18:44

Take it easy Aragog Flowers

Aragog · 24/11/2020 18:48

WhyNotMe40 - thanks, I am trying too.
I am hoping to keep my day off timetable on Thursday. I lost tomorrow's due to the staff dropping again.

This terrifies me. My fit and healthy KS4 has Covid and it has knocked him about.

Today, at my other son's school we learned 150 were sent home due to children coming into school having tested positive Angry.
The school has written a letter pleading to parents not to send kids in.

WhyNotMe40 · 24/11/2020 18:58

Sorry Middleager Flowers hope he feels better soon.

The same time has happened both at the school I work at, and my DC's school.
Fuckwits Angry

middleager · 24/11/2020 18:59

Kids in who've tested positive for Covid that is!

WhyNotMe40 · 24/11/2020 19:01

@middleager

Ffs At my kids school it was sending the kids in while positive themselves or waiting on kids test results (which turned out to be positive) not actually having had a positive result! That's imbecilic!
middleager · 24/11/2020 19:11

Yes that happened at my son's school. There are three positive cases now in his class (including him) that we know of.

WhyNotMe40 · 24/11/2020 19:15

There are no words.....

Danglingmod · 24/11/2020 19:17

This is not unusual...

SomelikeitHoth · 24/11/2020 21:01

Whole KS4 yeargroup is off for at least a week at dc school

Three current active cases that is in the form. So far about a quarter of the class have had it since September Sad
FredtheFerret · 24/11/2020 23:38

@Aragog Please take things steady. You can only do what you can manage.Don't make yourself ill. I speak as a teacher still off sick with Covid. I feel frustrated for my classes and guilty at creating extra work for colleagues but realistically am nowhere near for for work yet.

FredtheFerret · 24/11/2020 23:41

Lots of staff off with positive tests at our school which makes me think I should man up and return to help out but I'm medically signed off and genuinely would collapse after about an hour. I still feel guilty though and as though I'm letting the pupils down in some way. 😢

middleager · 24/11/2020 23:45

I'm sorry to hear about your health Fred.

You have not let pupils down, the Government has. It's obvious how much you care and this is exploited by them.

FredtheFerret · 25/11/2020 00:10

Thank you middleager. I know this I suppose..But oh, my Y13s whom I've taught since they were 11 year old babies...and my Y11s who are so stressed about the time they've missed..(They are on their third lot of isolation)...I'm not worried they won't catch up but it's so crap for them and I know lots will be anxious 😓. I feel like I need to be in school, being cheerful and laughing with them and telling them stop stressing, you Muppets. It's going to be fine! And then I get up and have a shower and have to go back to bed because I'm wiped out...

noblegiraffe · 25/11/2020 00:59

Please teacher with/recovering from covid take it easy and put your own health first for once. I have heard of teachers trying to do too much too soon and ending up back off again and for much longer which is worse in the long run.

Schools should consider a phased return if necessary.

IloveJKRowling · 25/11/2020 09:15

100% this. Everyone who I know who's had covid more than very mildly has stressed the importance of resting and taking recovery slowly. As they have learned the hard way that if you try and do too much, it can set you back.

IloveJKRowling · 25/11/2020 09:20

Also, I know teachers are going above and beyond for the students, but if teachers keep stepping in to do things that really aren't in their job, then the absolute mess this government has made will take longer to become apparent to the majority.

I really wish so many schools weren't so silent about the massive efforts and problems. I get the sense there's a lot of frantic scurrying around and overworked staff at both my DDs schools but they try and maintain a calm, professional approach. I actually think, given the lack of support from government, it's not bad for parents to hear 'we're struggling because of X, Y, and Z, this is what you can do to help'. When I wrote to one Head back in September, he was much more honest with me about it all but this doesn't come through in the letters / general communications.

And ask parents for money if you need it - don't always be putting your hands in your pockets teachers! Those who can will contribute and those who can't don't have to. I'd happily contribute to a soap fund or a fund for head scanning thermometers.

Hello - the Department of Education in Whitehall wanted us to post the below message for them on this thread.

Apologies for doing this so close to the end of the thread - that's entirely our fault - the DfE actually sent us this a few days ago. Sorry.

Here's their message:

"We are aware of some media reports last week regarding the transmission of Covid in schools and understand this has the potential to raise some concern."

"Last week, SAGE (the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) published papers relating to the latest evidence of incidence and transmission of coronavirus in schools."

"The science is clear that children and young people are typically at very low risk from Covid-19 The disease is much less severe for children, even if they do catch coronavirus. And staff are not at higher risk than those working in other sectors."

"Furthermore, the papers say there is no clear or conclusive evidence that schools are playing a causal role in transmission and the spread of Covid-19."

“This is probably because education settings are rigorously enforcing all the mitigations – handwashing, mask wearing, bubbles, isolation of staff and pupils with symptoms etc.”

"The latest weekly figures show that 99% of schools are open and that only 0.2% of pupils are isolating at home with a confirmed Covid-19 case."

"As a department, we have ensured that all schools continue to operate with strict safety measures in place to minimise the risk of infection."

"You can read more about transmission in schools here."

More gaslighting and lies there from the government RowanMumsnet.

It’s interesting that this thread has made the DfE this worried enough to ask you to post, albeit a few days ago...

If everything was fine in all schools, why would they be worried about a thread like this?????

It’s interesting that this thread has had this reaction. Proof that writing and starting threads on Mumsnet can be a good things to do.

noblegiraffe · 25/11/2020 16:50

Please @MNHQ invite the DfE in for a web chat about school safety to properly discuss the situation.

DBML · 25/11/2020 16:54

Oh goodness, that tickled me Mumsnet!
We’ve got multiple year groups off isolating due to positive cases.

Beebityboo · 25/11/2020 16:58

FFS. WE KNOW CHILDREN ARE LESS AT RISK WHAT ABOUT VULNERABLE PARENTS AND TEACHERS!
