Is a change beginning to happen regarding schools?

I’ve been noticing more articles lately in the mainstream press about the difficulties in schools (which will come as no surprise to most people). There’s also been some research which has basically confirmed that schools are driving infections. So, along with it looking like this lockdown has been a waste of time (due to schools being kept open to continue the spread) and people in power calling for Hull schools to be closed do we think that schools will be closing early for Christmas?

Is there any chance that blended learning or rotas will be coming in after the Christmas holidays?

We are a vulnerable family with children in primary school and the risk that sending them every day with no safety measures poses to our family is causing me huge amounts of stress.

I cannot believe this is still not in the national news. It's like Covid is old news now, not interested.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/11/2020 13:17

I think there has been very little in the news re schools but workplace outbreaks, care homes etc have made it into the news.

Ginogineli · 24/11/2020 13:22

Because kids aren’t dying left right and centre

Teachers don’t get it more than anyone else

Most people aren’t that worried about virus now

And mos of the whole world - except Mumsnet- agrees that kids are better off in school

Some of you need to look at yourselves

your sounding irrational and it’s not healthy to be that concerned that you spend all day every day saying the same thing

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2020 13:25

Do you realise how cold you sound?

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2020 13:26

xenia there are many explanations as to why that Danish mask study is deeply flawed if you'd care to google more widely.

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2020 13:31

It is interesting that yesterday, Gavin trumpeted the 99% of schools line, without acknowledging this is a drop, So disinterested are all MPs from all parties, that no one challenges his lies.

It's not cold hearted it's true. Blended learning had over a term's trial run. It failed. And anyone who thinks children should be social distancing at this point shouldn't be anywhere near them.
Susanwouldntlikeit · 24/11/2020 13:32

@Ginogineli
Waste of breath, do many on here just have closed minds and reinforce each other’s competitive misery. In RL teachers are focused on teaching and learning , not morning about how unfair it is that they are still at work while others are furloughed.

Half of my DCs year group are out of school, many have tested positive.

25% of the teachers at my friend's DC's school have tested positive.

It is a serious problem in schools.

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2020 13:53

Jesus susan you are like a dog with a bone. That is literally not what anyone is saying.

The minute one person seems to replicate your view you leap on here to support them whilst never answering any questions asked o you upthread.

How's it going in that small private school of yours, with its small class sizes?

Any intelligent teacher would understand the far reaching issues and problems facing education now and be deeply depply concerned.

noblegiraffe · 24/11/2020 14:28

Susan’s just here to wind people up. Not a serious poster.

The BBC are reporting it now.

Meanwhile I am sitting here listening to my next door neighbour (who is ECV and a teacher) coughing.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 24/11/2020 15:02

My Sons high school currently only have year 8,11 and 6th form attending. All other years are self isolating.

And now this... they'll stop contacts isolating because of the figures. Where are the unions?!!

SmileEachDay · 24/11/2020 15:26

Most people aren’t that worried about virus now

I heard a scientist on Radio 4 this morning explaining that it is people with this attitude that are most likely to create a third wave.

Right now, when we’re close to a vaccine, but when community transmission is high - people like you start shrugging and forgetting that there’s a pandemic.

So...yeah! Well done!

rsababe · 24/11/2020 15:31

They probably don't know where Humberside is. Just East Yorkshire. And yes I am being 100% serious.

Don't forget Barnard Castle.

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2020 15:36

If anyone cannot see how chaotic and confusing the DfE's constant pronouncements , hectoring stance and vacillations are , they are seriously deluded.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 24/11/2020 15:36

Gosh. They are definitely aware of the figures and buldozing on regardless. Its3so blatent.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 24/11/2020 15:37

They really don't like teachers do they..
.

rsababe · 24/11/2020 15:48

@PineappleUpsideDownCake

They really don't like teachers do they.. .
Teachers are lazy, workshy, only in it for the holidays and worse still the government have to pay for state schools which is something that they hate doing even more than they hate teachers.

In my world I am very thankful for the teachers that my DC have, they are doing an amazing job. Yes, I've told them this.

IloveJKRowling · 24/11/2020 16:39

The TES is doing some great reporting on this.

The news that out of touch DfE will make all the decisions will end in disaster. That I have no doubt. The one saving grace so far has been the local public health teams in most cases, as far as I can tell.

They've left out an option though - schools 'on' or 'off (except for vulnerable kids and key workers') doesn't actually work if you don't have enough staff to operate schools AT ALL, and the way they're going I wouldn't be at all surprised if that happens.

They seem to forget that teachers are human.

The DfE / MPs don't seem to care really if vulnerable and key worker kids (or the kids at home) get educated by qualified teachers- they'll just pay people to babysit the ones in school. Shows how hollow the 'education is so important' is.

WhyNotMe40 · 24/11/2020 17:07

Should be "On" "Off" or "Fucked"

ChloeDecker · 24/11/2020 18:10

And your mind is so “open”, eh Susan ?!

In RL teachers are focused on teaching and learning
As all teachers are, including the ones posting on Mumsnet who are still working and doing the best they can for their pupils, don’t make out they are not.

not morning about how unfair it is that they are still at work while others are furloughed.

How very “Allo Allo” that mistake is. Grin
Seriously though, no one is “morning” about how unfair it is that they are still at work while others are furloughed.
But you know this and yes, I agree, you are not a serious poster.

IloveJKRowling · 24/11/2020 18:18

Yes. This.

Aragog · 24/11/2020 18:40

2 more staff went home for tests today. One more tested positive yesterday. Have more parents who have called in to take their children out as parent has tested positive.

Looks like my infant school hasn't finished with it yet.

Over 2/3 of our staff has have it now
Several parents.
Some children.

Luckily no one has been so badly affected they've needed ICU type treatment.
I was the worst, ending up in hospital with complications. I was off about 7 weeks in the end.
Several have ended up being off for over a fortnight - a number a month. Lots are still dealing with the after effects especially fatigue and some with lingering coughs and shortness of breath. A number haven't regained their sense of taste and/or smell yet. It seems to be the woman in the 40-50s age group most affected when it comes to it dragging on.

It seems to the younger ones who avoided in earlier in October who are catching it now.

Most cannot figure where or how they caught it, if not in school.

In RL teachers are focused on teaching and learning

As are we all here, despite having caught Covid and many still recovering from it.
I was answering remote learning from pupils whilst sat in a hospital bed!
I was planning my lessons, uploading and overseeing remote learning, feeding back to pupils, etc all whilst off sick.

I went back this week and despite being exhausted after 2 days - my 'phased return' isn't working out well due to being low staffed again with other staff having to be sent home ill and/or with symptoms. Despite this I have found myself having to work at home int he evenings again too - just finished uploading tomorrow's remote learning for the latest class to be in SI. Will need to email some to some individual children isolating later on too.
