Do you really keep DC indoors for 14 days?

DS's school year has been sent home for 14 days because someone in his year has covid. I know we are supposed to keep him indoors the whole time. But what have people really done in practice? It's a very long time not to walk further than the bathroom.

We got an email saying no leaving the home even for exercise.

A friend whose DC are at a posh London school wern't told their DC had to stay indoors. I guess you get what you pay for.

We've done it with an 8 year old and a 12 year old. Was testing at times but manageable. Lots of ways to keep active inside if you have no other choice.

I did in the first lockdown when we had symptoms but no testing available. The young one played in the garden and the older one didn't give a toss about staying in, wanted to be on her iPad all day loooong...

We kept DD to the house and garden. But I wouldn't blame anyone if they took an isolating child out for a walk, providing they kept their distance from others.

DS (14) has just gone back to school after 14 days isolation. Yes he stayed in the house, did exercises in his room and a bit of hula hooping in the garden. It was pretty shit tbh.

Sadly I have a postage stamp garden that is now mud and will be until spring.

We're on day 8 of keeping my 7 year old indoors. My friend has just completed 14 days with her 3 and 8 year olds. Yes, people are keeping their kids indoors when advised to. And it's nothing to do with state or private schools - the private schools should have been kept indoors too.

We've just done it with a 5yr old and a 9yr old. It was tough but all for the greater good.

Other people where we live all seem to take their DC out for walks when their years are sent home. I was wondering how common this is.

I think I would take mine out for an early morning cycle where I know there won’t be anyone about.

Staying home for 14 days is more detrimental to their health than covid. Especially if this keeps happening.

We haven’t had to do it yet but if I’m honest I think I’d have to get DS out for a walk or something every couple of days in that scenario.

No playgrounds or parks, but a walk/scoot round the block or similar with just me or DH I would probably chance to stop the madness setting in.

Yes. My teen DS stayed in his room or the playroom, used a separate bathroom and ate separately to the rest of the family. I think he popped outside in the garden a couple of times but otherwise he isolated. Not pleasant for him or for us but that’s what we were told to do.

I would do this too.

Yep we remained in house and garden. Very lucky to have a good sized garden. It made the school run for the other kids hard work though, as DH had to change his work pattern to stay home with the isolating one while I school runned the others.

Is it actually 14 full days? It wasn't actually 14 days for us... it was about 10 days as the 14 days is from when they were last together. By the time the test results came back they'd been apart for 4 days already.

Can you go for a drive if you don't get out of the car?

This is good to read - we're on day 5 with our 4yo. I have been taking him for a scoot around the block in the middle of the morning when it's quieter, and we live in a quiet residential area anyway. I know it's against the rules but I'm weighing up the sanity of everyone in the house (DH sleeping off shift work too!) and how we're not touching anyone or seeing anyone.

But other than that, we're sticking to the house and the small garden.

Bit odd. It’s not really up to the school is it? I thought it’s the government’s guidelines that if you are told to self isolate you don’t leave the house for 14 days. If you are found to breach these rules you can be fined regardless of which school your DC attends.

We have properly isolated a 12 year old, and now a 7 year old. They were allowed in the back garden but not the front garden. Yes, it isn't fun but it is possible.

And just to add my 10 year old and 4 year old have had to self isolate twice now for 14 days each time. It’s not fun, but rules are rules. They spend the majority of the time indoors and then out into the garden, but that is it no trips outside the house unfortunately.

Isolated 13 yr old. Stayed in the house. Walked to the gate twice a day. Met noone and didnt leave our property. She knows the reasons why and understood it was important.

Guidance is to stay home so we stuck to house and garden only. It didn’t say there was an exception for exercise etc when self isolating so no walks etc.
