@WhoopsSomethingWentWrong

In fact our local Tesco, which I have never queued in before, has now got huge queues as for some reason since lockdown #2 they’ve decided to reduce their opening hours ‘for safety’.
Our local Lidl has shortened their opening times by 3 hours 'for safety' but all that's achieved is huge queues and busier supermarket. Not sure of the logic there.
AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/11/2020 16:22

Meh. People need to get out of the house, I've mooched on over to the supermarket a couple of times this week cos I'm seriously climbing the walls at home with nothing to do, nowhere to go and no kids to look after. Only so much cleaning and reading one can do.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/11/2020 16:24

This is why I've been doing the supermarket shop in the last hour before closing on a Thursday. More staff stacking shelves than other customers.

That’s what I tried to do, but when I got there they had decided to close 3 hours earlier than usual to keep people ‘safe’.

@itsgettingweird

Why are they rammed? Surely they should still be limiting numbers of people?

I think part of coming out of lockdown these are things government need to set. People per sq meter indoors etc rather than closing everything or opening everything.

Exactly. The key is social distancing, not packing the same number of people into fewer places.

Shutting hospitality doesn't stop people mixing and going out. It just means they're less spread out.

Just seen the footage of a big brawl in Bristol at an anti-lockdown protest with hundreds or even thousands right on top of each other (last weekend it was Manchester). If the pubs were open they'd be in the pubs, under the supervision of staff to stay distanced etc.

@WhoopsSomethingWentWrong

Ah, a ‘what lockdown?’ thread. We haven’t had one of those for at least an hour and a half! Try saying ‘what lockdown?’ to the shops, hairdressers, beauticians, bars, restaurants, cafes, museums, soft plays, tourist attractions etc who have had to close their doors again.
Yes this non existent Lock down hadn't left anyone jobless has it OP Hmm
BeakyWinder · 14/11/2020 16:31

Wow, what a miserable post.

User158340 · 14/11/2020 16:32

@roarfeckingroarr

Our local pub and a restaurant/bar are open. Getting round rules by asking customers to order in advance and then selling "take away" drinks that people are drinking outside with heat lamps on.
Where do they empty their full bladders?
User158340 · 14/11/2020 16:36

@Waxonwaxoff0

These threads make me roll my eyes every time. Coming on Mumsnet to moan about Asda being rammed when you were also there.
What do people expect on a Saturday morning/afternoon?

I do a weekly shop early on a Monday or Tuesday morning before I start WFH because I know it'll be quiet.

People who go into supermarkets at the busiest times when they have other times they can go, are part of the problem. There's supermarkets open 24 hours and all through the week, why go on a Saturday morning, when it's going to be packed with families?

Jrobhatch29 · 14/11/2020 16:37
That looks like an orderly, social distanced queue to a shop that must be limiting numbers. What's the problem?
PhilCornwall1 · 14/11/2020 16:37

Funny how there are so many on here who says everyone is breaking rules except them.

Everyone is breaking the rules, including me. There you go.

QueenPaws · 14/11/2020 16:42

@Jrobhatch29 I'm just saying it's busy, and apparently the message of stay home unless it's essential...
I'm pretty sure every single persons visit on there wasn't for an essential reason. Sorry, I'm a bit grumpy when I've been home for nearly 9 months and yet Homebase, home bargains, garden centres etc are packed out when we are in an incredibly high numbers area. What's the point of this lockdown if nobody follows it? Why are my neighbours having their mates in and out their house? Why is everyone dragging their family out to the garden centre to "get out" when the message is stay home unless it's essential?
Of course go out if you need nappies, lightbulbs, a new kettle, whatever has broken but I don't think going out for a mooch is... go to the park or walk round the docks or get a drive through McDonald's.. but everyone is cramming in the shops

User158340 · 14/11/2020 16:48

@QueenPaws

It's not everyone, it's a significant minority.

I think shutting the pubs and cafes is counter productive because many of the people who go there every Saturday are climbing the walls and descending on other shops and going round to their mates instead.

QueenPaws · 14/11/2020 16:50

@User158340 true. I take my car out so the battery doesn't die and sometimes have a drive and sit somewhere for a while so people watching I guess. The shops that can open are a lot busier than they usually are

There are always more people in shops at the weekend because people are at work during the week. I've been in shops on weekdays this week and they are quiet. Also what is essential? Someone might class a trip to home bargains essential for xmas presents for their kids that are cheaper than online prices. I've been to wickes today for paint so I can paint my living room next week because if I don't have something to do I'm going to lose my mind. There are only so many walks I can take! Shops are open and you are allowed to go. There is no point getting annoyed at people for doing something they are allowed to do.

I wouldn't go to a shop on the weekend. I get whatever I need through the week and Amazon Prime/online shopping is good for a quick turnaround as well. Next Day delivery has saved me trips to the shops a few times when i've needed something.

I go out for a walk twice a day so I get the need to get out the house and clear your head, but do it away from hordes of other people.

User158340 · 14/11/2020 16:56

@Jrobhatch29

People going to shops isn't a problem. It's going into busy shops. If it's busy don't go in.

ThornAmongstRoses · 14/11/2020 16:59

I have RTFT so apologies if this has already been discussed....

But what’s the latest in terms of supermarkets only being allowed to sell essential items?

Was it just a myth?

Or was it something that was supposed to happen but never took off?

MyPersona · 14/11/2020 17:16

I’ve been out today to meet my daughter as she’s had a difficult week and we needed more than just a phone call. We met at a drive through coffee place and parked in adjacent spaces for a chat. It was at an out of town retail park with no supermarket and it was insanely busy. We queued for 20 minutes to get out of the car park. We are supposed to be avoiding unnecessary contact and the situation resembled Christmas week in normal times. It’s just unbelievable. However reading the thread I can see why.

onedayinthefuture · 14/11/2020 17:29

Probably better off having everything open and a limit on numbers rather than a lucky select few and bedlam. People are literally going stir crazy with this weather.

SirFlouncealot · 14/11/2020 18:00

I’m astounded at people shocked to find places that they have visited so busy like they are entitled and fully compliant but nobody else is.

Personally I wouldn’t go shopping at obviously busy times and certainly wouldn’t make a thread on MN complaining about the audacity of people doing the exact same thing that I was.

TheGreatWave · 14/11/2020 18:55

Hugs queues here.

No wonder cases are high if people are queuing for hugs.

TheGreatWave · 14/11/2020 18:56

Sorry forgot the Grin

How can this be? Most out of town parks are made up of the same shops and are generally non essential, even allowing for people collecting orders, surely it still wouldn't be that busy.

Though if it is all click and collect then they will be standing in a queue outside, so irrelevant really.
