Does anyone think that England will definitely be out of lockdown after 2nd?

This doesn't feel remotely like a lockdown.

What does a 'lockdown' feel like? It's a meaningless word really. This time last year, the majority of us had probably never uttered the word 'lockdown' in our lives.

Has the government actually used the word 'lockdown' to describe current restrictions?

CarryOnWalking · 12/11/2020 17:14

On the briefing now they’ve just said we will go back to a tier system after the 2nd.

VioletCharlotte · 12/11/2020 17:18

I'm think it'll be back to tiers. There's likely to be restrictions around people meeting up, but shops, etc will be open.

Hesnotlocal · 12/11/2020 17:19

I suspect we'll get a load of waffle about cases levelling out so lockdown has worked so it will officially end on 2 December but regions will be in tiers that put most of us under more restrictions than before 'lockdown'. Probably with a promise to review it again the week before Xmas and some sort of announcement of a new rule about meeting indoors to allow people to mix with one other household with social distancing (so they can give in to the cries to 'save christmas' without actually saying it's a Christmas issue and being accused of insensitivity for not doing the same for other religions). Probably followed by some sort of new year incentive for us to all go out to pubs, restaurants and shops on the back of a roll our of the vaccine to those at highest risk, just before a 3rd wave in Feb.

Remmy123 · 12/11/2020 17:19

Yes it will - no need to extend it

kittensarecute · 12/11/2020 17:20

Yes. And there should be no more lockdowns, we've all sacrificed enough. We need to live our lives again without these silly rules.

Ifailed · 12/11/2020 17:21

They will extend it for a week at least, then bow down to pressure to let people do their xmas thing, which apparently involves spending lots of money (so good for retailers) on things they don't need and then endure family visits from people they don't like.

flumposie · 12/11/2020 17:21

No idea. I cant tell if this lockdown is working as I'm still teaching, neighbours are still going to work , roads are just as busy.

kittensarecute · 12/11/2020 17:22

Umm no they won't, it will end on December 2 as it should.
OverThinkingUnderDoing · 12/11/2020 17:23

It bloody better end then. If it doesn’t I’m just going to do what I need to do in order to stay sane. They can fine me if they like 🤷‍♀️

frozendaisy · 12/11/2020 17:24

@PuppyMonkey

I don’t know, I just can’t imagine them saying “yes all the pubs can open again now” just in the run up up Christmas when everyone will think “let’s party!”

What could possibly go wrong? Confused

I really don't think they could justify opening drinking establishments to the NHS staff in December, doing the guesstimate work a surge of Covid patients mid-late January, medics quite rightly would be "what the actual fuck?"

Surely not, unless they have a 2pm curfew.....
..

junglepie · 12/11/2020 17:47

It will end on Dec 2nd as legally it is set to automatically expire. However, I think they will then introduce another set of bascially very similar restrictions, but call it something different, claim they have ended lockdown and come up with a new slogan..."Go Christmas shopping...but hold your breath" Ho! Ho! Ho!

Loveable1 · 12/11/2020 17:53

Hopefully it will end on the 2nd as the economy needs people to spend on Christmas and the government know this. Many shops are already going under, any more then another 4 weeks of closure and it will have A bigger impact on the ones that are tipping on the edge at the moment.

No! No more restrictions! We've given up nearly a year of our lives and enough is enough now.
EdithWeston · 12/11/2020 17:56

Yes, I think it will as they've nailed their colours to that mast

But it'll all end in tiers, and I wouldn't rule out a 4th tier if the hospitalisation and death rates keep increasing at the awful rate we've seen in the last week or two

MercyBooth · 12/11/2020 18:03

Out and about what im hearing is that its a bit much to expect people to give up Christmas when Bojo and co. didnt want to upset the rich by locking down earlier and cancelling Cheltenham . Then there is the fact that they gave T and T to their rich mates. People are fed up with making sacrifices and then being shat on , emotionally blackmailed and gaslighted (Cummings) People have had enough

IrkedEssex · 12/11/2020 18:09

The legislation expires on the 2nd. The original tier system legislation was repealed by the current legislation. So they are going to have to pass new legislation of one sort or another or put us all back to normal (which I can't see happening).

cockroachcrumble12 · 12/11/2020 18:10

Well are we really in lock down, loads of people in my area still going into local shops without masks no social distancing parties going on rules being broken continuously.

52andblue · 12/11/2020 18:12

Officially it will end on the 2nd but we will be put into Tiers which will be as strict as this 'lockdown' if these rates continue.
But they will want us back at the shops and some sop towards Xmas.
Maybe Schools will go part time for Secondary onwards or 3 wk hols?
But back into Lockdown 3 in Jan when the rates go up again as folk will now do what they want to, as the Govt has lost credibility.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 12/11/2020 18:13

No, todays cases are really high so clearly it’s not working yet.

It would be awful on the NHS and people who can’t wfh if they relax over Christmas as it puts those people at huge risk afterwards if lots of groups mixing as they won’t be quarantined afterwards.

JustBidenMyTime · 12/11/2020 18:15

I think on December 2nd the situation in hospitals will be quite bad so it will not be possible to remove restrictions. The best you can hope for is to go back to the tier system, but currently a lot more of the country will come into tier 2 than before. (And they might have to introduce tier 4 for those parts of the country that may potentially be in worse position - or that may come in January after the 'saving Christmas' storyline pans out).

PudseyPatch · 12/11/2020 18:18

No, todays cases are really high so clearly it’s not working yet.

I don't think it will work with schools staying open. Feel like bubbles, year groups and schools are closing all around us at the moment due to positive cases.

Forgetmenot157 · 12/11/2020 18:20

I think it will end... Will be 6 weeks of less restrictions like the summer then 2 months of lockdown while all the elderly and vulnerable get vaccinated... Hopefully then minimal restrictions by easter.... I think most people could deal with that... Especially a third lockdown if we knew that the elderly and vulnerable were being vaccinated and it would likely be the last lockdown.

Danglingmod · 12/11/2020 18:20

If we finish and go back to tiers, it needs to be tier 3+ for the vast majority of the country. My area was still tier 1 before the latest lockdown but cases now 650+/100,000 - significantly higher than the areas who were tier 3 when they entered them. And with schools still open and most shops, it's not exactly going to go down.
