Virus seems to be rising rapidly in my area

Is the virus rising rapidly in anyone else’s area?

According to the Zoe app the rate is increasing in my area and not dropping or stabilising like other places in England.

Those Zoe graphs don't look very helpful if they just show numbers - surely you need to see figures per 100,000 for comparison?

But yes, my area has shot up, practically doubled over the last week, over 400 per 100,000 now. We live fairly close to urban areas which have had quite high numbers for several weeks , but having been under localised restrictions their numbers are stabilising now whereas ours are still rising . Fingers crossed we will see a benefit from lockdown.

Cases have almost halved in my area of the North West. Funny how now that cases are rising in other areas of the country, no one’s posting all over MN claiming that cases are rising due to peasants who are too stupid to wear masks

Yes it's strange that isnt it LadyCatStark. All those posters talking of unruly northerners and how it must be that people in Liverpool are not following rules all very quiet now our rates are plummeting and theirs are increasing. There was one very vocal poster from Bristol on the Liverpool thread when rates were first high there in September almost lording it over everyone, comparing cities and saying it was the people of Liverpools fault. Strangely no sign of her now the tables have turned

Does anyone wonder whether this information could be counter productive? The sort of people who went out for the last hurrah before the first lockdown could see a graph with what looks like a big drop and use that as validation that it's ok to break lockdown.

I'm not saying it should be hidden from us, but such a visual justification that cases are going down, with three weeks of lockdown still to go, there's a few people I know that would think like this Hmm

I don't know, there was a post somewhere the other day that I can't now find, about all the "scousers" in North Wales. Someone pointed out that a lot of people in north Wales near the border have a Liverpool-sounding accent anyway. I can't help thinking that those who live in the area know that very well.

I’m in Cornwall, all of a sudden I know of 6 people who have tested positive this week!

Tyzz · 13/11/2020 16:04

Shooting up here, and not far from me is Hull which has been constantly at the lower end of cities but has rocketed up to the top of the league table no-one wants to win.
I was always curious why it seemed to do so well, it wasn't badly hit in the first wave and I put it down to being relatively isolated geographically. Numbers there were low when all the NW, NE and South Yorkshire were high. Now it's worse than all of them.

MissMarplesGlove · 13/11/2020 16:17

Yup, going up in my city as well. And this is AFTER the university did a lot of work to curb the transmission rates amongst students.

The rate rocketed in late September, went down, and is now up over a 1000 again.

It's worrying - and annoying. I live a very secluded limited life now. I wish other people would just get over their selfishness and take responsibility.

viccat · 13/11/2020 16:18

Going up in my London borough too.

MissMarplesGlove · 13/11/2020 16:20

Should have said - I'm in the far SW

MrsFezziwig · 13/11/2020 16:30

I’ve been reporting on the Zoe app since the early days and think it has provided a lot of useful research and predictions, but it doesn’t give an actual number of cases. Users are also self-selecting so possibly not entirely representative of the population.

I use the BBC website (google “BBC coronavirus in my area”) which gives actual case numbers (also adjusted to per 100k) and death rates when you type in your area, and some useful graphs.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/11/2020 16:35

I live in rural Cornwall and there are 6 cases in my area (66 per 100,000) and the nearest tiny town has 166 per 100,000 - and going upwards all the time. Largest number of infections in the 20 -29 age group.

XiCi · 13/11/2020 16:52

I feel for you, that's what is was like here when the students came back (Liverpool city region). All of a sudden went from really low to cousins, friends, nephews, godchildren, work colleagues etc all getting infected. Thankfully all ok after a few days but it's just horrible when so many people coming down with it. Thankfully the rates are plummeting here now
