Did you lose your sense of smell and for how long?

I've just started with covid. Having no sense of smell was what made me test as other symptoms were like a head cold.

I also have a sore tongue though that's improving.

Loss of smell is the worst symptom.

I lost my sense of smell in October 2019. It's still not back.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 08/11/2020 12:37

I lost mine totally on day 4, I'm now on day 9 and I think its returning - if I stick my nose right up to something strong smelling (I'm testing with lavender oil) I can just get a whisper of a scent. Hopefully that means it's coming back. I have heard it can take months for some people though, depending on whether the loss of smell is caused by simple inflammation or by actual damage to the neurons that allow you to smell.

ScottishDream · 08/11/2020 12:38

Yes, I tested positive last Saturday, symptoms from a couple of days before that.
I’ve got maybe 2% of my sense of smell back but am otherwise recovered.

incognitomum · 08/11/2020 13:22

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz what do you think caused it? Have you tried the scent training?

Hoping we all get it to return.

I can taste a little. Mainly distinguishing sweet and salty.

I lost my taste and smell the end of March. Now I have distorted smell. All strong smells smell awful. Can't distinguish between a nice or horrible smell.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/11/2020 13:41

I had a really bad cold last October. It wasn't as bad a pneumonia (have had that before) but I felt dreadful for about a week. Loss of smell was one of the things that happened.

I assumed residual effect of the cold, then it want back Feb. I then thought maybe an allergy to something in the house, we went away for a week and it didn't clear up, then didn't want to trouble the GP as covid hit.

I'll Google scent training.

MissBetina · 08/11/2020 13:41

I lost my smell 6th of October and am probably have about 10% of it back

MrsMoggy · 08/11/2020 13:42

I lost my smell and taste. 3 weeks later and I still haven’t got it back, sometimes get the slightest hint of a smell but it’s really frustrating

FixTheBone · 08/11/2020 13:48

As others,

Covid in April, the only smell I have is like inhaling the contents of an ashtray, a constant, dry, awful taste at the back of my nose.

There's so many of us. I even found a Facebook support group.

Lost it in April - slowly regained some sense of smell but quite distorted still and very limited

HarrietOh · 08/11/2020 17:15

Just lost my sense of smell today, got my test booked but it’s so strange, I can’t smell a jar of lazy garlic at all!

kazza446 · 08/11/2020 17:31

I tested positive for covid on Tuesday, lost my sense of taste gradually over Thursday day. Lost my sense of smell Friday! I can taste some sweet things. Hopefully it’s not too long before it returns!

incognitomum · 08/11/2020 17:31

HarrietOh it's so bizarre

Lost it in mid-March. My husband and baby had v classic symptoms of fever and cough, but for me it was horrendous headache, dizziness and total loss of taste and smell - followed by the cough. They both recovered (older 2 dcs unaffected) after about a fortnight... I regained some sense of taste and smell after about 2 months. Remained hideously distorted as others have said. Then I got awful sinusitis a few weeks ago and had antibiotics (did get prescribed some for secondary infection in early April too) but this second course seemed to do something. Sense of taste and smell now pretty much back after 7 months. I am clinically vulnerable (on immunosuppressants) so could be that I had a slightly more extreme reaction to the “mild” effects! Other friends who lost theirs did start to improve after a month or so. Good luck and feel better soon.

itssquidstella · 08/11/2020 18:11

Yes, for about a week.

Lostinacloud · 08/11/2020 18:15

Lost mine on day 3, started to get it back around day 10 but 16 days on I’d say it’s still only at 80% ish.

incognitomum · 08/11/2020 20:58

Thanks everyone.

I haven't experienced this before even with bad sinusitis. So weird.

Lost mine due to covid about a month ago. Still no return whatsoever. Each day I sniff Lynx, bleach, toilet duck, scented candles, but nothing at all, except a slightly burnt nose from the candle!

I hope you don't live near a Lush!
ScottishDream · 09/11/2020 10:16

I’ve got a little bit more of mine back today. Steam/hot drinks seem to help.

Treaclepie19 · 09/11/2020 18:28

Im about to book a test for tomorrow but does this sound similar?
I couldn't smell or taste my toothpaste this morning. Went about my day (at home) but couldn't taste something minty. Had coffee and other food as normal. This evening sprayed some of the strong smelling pink dettol spray and could barely smell it. I knew it was strong because I could feel it if that makes sense.
Also got a bit of a burning feeling in my nose and mouth. Like a menthol feeling.

Treaclepie19 · 09/11/2020 18:28

(I normally have a really good sense of smell so it's very odd!)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/11/2020 18:29

Mine lasted about 6 hours for most things although weirdly I still can't smell onion after 6 days!

The weird burny chemical nasal cavity and tongue feeling lasted a few days.
