Did you lose your sense of smell and for how long?

I've just started with covid. Having no sense of smell was what made me test as other symptoms were like a head cold.

I also have a sore tongue though that's improving.

Loss of smell is the worst symptom.

@Treaclepie19 I very suddenly within a few hours completely lost my smell, literally can’t smell even a faint whiff of anything at all.
Had my test today waiting on results, but I’ll be very surprised if it’s not positive!

Angrymum22 · 09/11/2020 21:25

Covid in Feb, cough and temp followed by altered taste 7days on and loss of smell. Taste returned within a few days but sense of smell to 3mnths to return. Sense of smell followed sinus pain ( but nor usual sinusitis symptoms). I’ve also had problems with palpitations and brain fog and other neurological symptoms.
Although I was not tested in Feb I have had two close prolonged contacts with positive cases and have not caught it, one was 6hrs in a car sat next to positive relative ( didn’t know they were positive at the time).

incognitomum · 09/11/2020 22:55

@Treaclepie19 yes sounds like it. It's so weird.

Thanks for the replies.
@incognitomum how have you been with it? I'm really nervous because we have a 5 year old and a 7 week old.

Tootsietoot · 09/11/2020 23:47

Lost it in March. Got the most horrible acrid smell in June. This was when loss of smell wasn't well known. Rang GP as acrid smell was so bad. They hadn't come across it then. Now it's ok but a bit weak

incognitomum · 10/11/2020 00:17

@Treaclepie19 am ok so far. It's been about a week.

OP posts:
CorianderLord · 10/11/2020 01:35

Don't know that it was Covid, but I had 3 weeks in March of no taste or smell

CorianderLord · 10/11/2020 01:36

Smell and taste normal now (although wasn't big on anything sweet for about 2 months)

miimblemomble · 10/11/2020 06:03

About one month in total, but I didn’t get the acrid taste others are reporting. It was just ... gone. It’s back now, as normal I think.

ChickOnAStick · 10/11/2020 07:36

Yes, on day 8 or 9 of COVID it just disappeared in an instant! But it came back after 4 days, thank god.

incognitomum · 10/11/2020 08:27

This is giving me hope it comes back.

Test done. Really not convinced I did it well enough though. Not compared to how it was done after labour.

Aragog · 10/11/2020 12:00

Tested positive 5 weeks ago.
I didn't lose my sense of smell at all.
For a day I had a change to my sense of taste - everything had a distinctive metallic taste. This was a couple of days after my positive result and about a week after my initial symptoms started.

Aragog · 10/11/2020 12:01

My headteacher lost her sense of sell with a different virus several years back. It has never fully returned. It must be a very strange thing to readjust to long term.

H1978 · 10/11/2020 12:24

It seems to be one of the most common symptoms, more than coughs, from the people I’ve known who have tested positive.

kazza446 · 10/11/2020 15:39

Prior to starting with typical covid symptoms I started with a strange taste in my mouth like abaking soda taste. I’m wondering if this was the start. I’m getting some traces of taste back but no sense of smell whatsoever. Still craving stodge too.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 10/11/2020 18:08

I was fortunate and mine came back after a week. But I didn't have a total loss, which may be why. I could still get the occasional faint whiff of things (coffee, lemons, peppermint.) But lost quite a lot of (normally) strong smells completely - bleach, vinegar, the food recycling caddy, my husband's running shoes etc etc.

Hope it comes back soon, OP

MrsMiaWallis · 10/11/2020 18:09

For about 3 weeks after I recovered.. It was horrible as I love cooking. Its still not as good as it was.

incognitomum · 10/11/2020 18:12

I was scared reading of people who have gone months with no sense of smell.

I can smell lavender oil slightly today.

That's positive! Mine disappear quickly but came back gradually. Just keep sniffing! Smile

MrsMiaWallis · 10/11/2020 19:12

Yes keep sniffing lemons, lavender qnd imagine the smell very hard while you are doing it. Mine came back very gradually

Dozer · 10/11/2020 19:14

Didn’t have covid diagnosis but DH was v unwell in Feb and I had bad cough, lost sense of smell, not back yet. Can now smell lemons, and coffee (which I love) smells acrid.

bimbimbap · 10/11/2020 19:17

i’m waiting for my result since i lost my senses of taste & smell yesterday. only other symptoms have been headache, sinus pain and fuzzy head / can’t concentrate on work.

joanwinifred · 10/11/2020 19:21

I had COVID in March. Lost my sense of smell then and didn't get it back until about a month later.

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 10/11/2020 19:24

Mine went for 4-5 weeks, well after the other symptoms had gone. It came back partially, then fully back to normal.
