Do you think lockdown will be extended after 4 weeks?

I know nobody actually knows, I'm just interested in other opinions and thoughts. I'm hopeful it will be just 4 weeks as being a small buisness owner it's so hard having to close and cancel/reschedule bookings. I know lots of people are struggling in different ways with lockdown also.

Yes gove basically said as much on Sunday less than 24 hours after boris announced it!

So can we stop with the “it’s only for four weeks” nonsense people continue write on here, in contrast to the welsh lockdown the government are saying from the start it will be extended.

Spied · 05/11/2020 11:19

Regardless of official lockdown extension a lot of places will come out of lockdown and be put straight into tier 3.

kittensarecute · 05/11/2020 11:20

No! It will be four weeks as Boris said.

Qasd · 05/11/2020 11:21

To be fair most businesses that need to shut now can open in tier three it’s only pubs that have to shut so quite a difference from a business perspective.

TeddyIsaHe · 05/11/2020 11:24

The National England lockdown will end in 4 weeks, but we’ll be back in a tier system with stricter rules I believe.

They cannot risk not having Xmas shoppers out and about and spending money, so I do think they’ll go regional again.

Brumcherub · 05/11/2020 11:27

Yes.

Wetweekend99 · 05/11/2020 11:29

Yes. Infection rates won't be low enough. They couldn't possibly let people mingle at christmas and risk a massive spike surely? Also I think school will close in December to help get the R rate down.

justicedanceson · 05/11/2020 11:30

Boris is keen to allow a relaxation in rules over Christmas for morale/popularity reasons. They need national rules for this and to get students home safely. I think logically then it makes sense to have everyone pretty much at home until just before Christmas. So I expect a 2-3 week extension.

Jessuk86 · 05/11/2020 11:31

I think it will be relaxed a bit maybe be allowed to visit one other household or something like that, maybe more shops will open but it won’t be back to normal as before this lockdown we’ve never been totally back to normal

Heartofstrings · 05/11/2020 11:31

4 weeks and then tighter restrictions until christmas. This is my prediction

Yep. I suspect schools will go online 2 weeks before Christmas Day - so stopping from Friday 11th December.
Hayeahnobut · 05/11/2020 11:37

No! It will be four weeks as Boris said.

@kittensarecute If 'Boris' says something, you can assume it to be untrue.

Calmandmeasured1 · 05/11/2020 11:40

No. I believe what the PM has said, that these restrictions will end on 2nd December and then we'll go into tiers depending on the infection rates and hospital circumstances in our areas.

If rates were reducing before this 2nd 'lockdown' and people comply with the rules, the R rate will hopefully be lower, allowing for us to be in a lower tier than previously.

user1493494961 · 05/11/2020 11:41

I don't think the lockdown will be extended, England will carry on with the tier system.

Drogonssmile · 05/11/2020 11:48

Better not be extended. I have a hair appt on 2nd Dec and haven't had my hair cut since 9th October 2019! Grin

MayFayre · 05/11/2020 11:58

Today’s announcement that the furlough scheme has been extended to March isn’t a good sign.

Racoonworld · 05/11/2020 12:00

@kittensarecute Boris didn’t say for definite it would only be 4 weeks. It has been said by others in government it is likely to be extended.

Racoonworld · 05/11/2020 12:01

@MayFayre I think that too. They’re preparing to need another lockdown sometime. I think we will be locked down until mid December, we will be released for Christmas then out back into lockdown in January or February

No no no no 😢

unicornpower · 05/11/2020 12:04

Yes as people are being upfront and saying they won't follow the rules so I can't see it only being 4 weeks. My SIL is refusing point blank and is travelling 4 hours to stay with her boyfriend and seeing friends etc. More shops are staying open this time which aren't 'essential' so bar pubs and restaurants closing, a lot of people are planning to carry on and normal.

I am following the rules as my parents are elderly but so many arent.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/11/2020 12:10

e.

‘They cannot risk not having Xmas shoppers out and about and spending money, so I do think they’ll go regional again.‘

This. Half the bricks and mortar shops in the country would go under if people couldn’t do their Christmas shopping, and by cramming it into two weeks or less they would risk massively crowded shops which won’t do anyone any good.

Also look what the case numbers are doing. They have been clearly levelling off or even falling for a while now. If the lockdown does any good at all we should be able to avoid an extension - and if it doesn’t it’s not clear how they can justify the cost to the economy of an extension.

LindaEllen · 05/11/2020 12:13

It will actually severely piss me off if a) uni students can all come home and b) we can all see our families at Christmas IF restrictions come back in straight afterwards.

That's not because I don't want those things to happen, because of course I do, but I would wonder why it 'being Christmas' makes the virus any less dangerous.

Surely the numbers around Christmas will be no different (possibly even worse) than when such huge numbers were put into tier 3 and we were allowed to see nobody.

All the things we've had drilled into us, protecting the NHS, protecting our loved ones .. why would the virus not spread at Christmas, then?

There are two scenarios.

  1. The virus is dangerous, a huge risk for the NHS and the elderly and vulnerable, so all of these steps including this lockdown are and were 100% necessary.

  2. The virus is NOT as dangerous as it was made out to be, the government feel that the actions taken were an overreaction, and they're now doing anything and everything to save face and stand by their original actions, while also being the heroes and claiming that this lockdown 'saved Christmas'.

If the situation is truly 1) then WHY even consider relaxing rules for Christmas? Yay, we get to see Great Aunt Joan for Christmas dinner, but oh shit, we killed her, but that's fine because we were allowed. Or we mix families from all over the country, all the uni students move again, there is a massive spike around the beginning of January and the NHS is crippled (as it is apparently so close to being now).

If this pandemic is as dangerous as they're making out, surely we shouldn't even be bothered about Christmas. If we can have anything even resembling a normal Christmas, I see no reason that we can't get back to normal in January - because it makes an absolute mockery of everything we've been through this year if you just relax restrictions 'because it's Christmas' and let loads of people get infected for the sake of a slice of turkey. Any virus where a temporary relaxation of restrictions is considered - for any reason - surely can't be harmful enough to have warranted them in the first place.

I want things relaxed when it's safe to do so, none of this 'temporary' Christmas shit, as if the virus will pause. It doesn't know the date!

MillieEpple · 05/11/2020 12:15

I dont know. It seemed really busy on the roads, far more people are continuing to work outside the home. I think people are more confident going to any shop that is open. So i am sure this lockdown lite will impact enough on the R rate.

However all the half terms might! Some schools/areas had two weeks and the weather was rubbish so there wasnt much mixing

MillieEpple · 05/11/2020 12:15

Not sure!
