Do you think lockdown will be extended after 4 weeks?

I know nobody actually knows, I'm just interested in other opinions and thoughts. I'm hopeful it will be just 4 weeks as being a small buisness owner it's so hard having to close and cancel/reschedule bookings. I know lots of people are struggling in different ways with lockdown also.

God knows but then again we moved from tier one to lockdown here.

However the primary school run is going to keep numbers higher. Our school has asked for face masks on parents but we are 7 year groups with many siblings going though two gates within the space of around 25 minutes as we supposedly have staggered starts. It’s sardines on the pathway and shoulder to shoulder going though the main gate.

Yes. Deaths nearly 500 yesterday. Its roughly 4 weeks from catching to dying from the virus. This week loads of people decided to go out for the last time before lockdown, so fast forward 4 weeks...I believe the hospital admissions will be on another scale than what we saw in March/April.

Greyshaggyrug · 05/11/2020 13:13

In Parliament yesterday he said lockdown will end automatically on 2nd December 🤷🏼‍♀️

crosstalk · 05/11/2020 13:14

Yes.

Greyshaggyrug · 05/11/2020 13:15

@janaus50s - our first lockdown lasted a lot longer, still hoping this time it’ll be 4 weeks.

Sadly I think so too. Even now many will continue either breaking the rules or doing non essential things so the spread keeps happening.

I wish we had had a much tighter lockdown like other countries.

Heatheronthehill · 05/11/2020 13:17

I think it’ll be 4 weeks, then some time off for Christmas (2-3 weeks) then back in again until end of February/early March. I hope I’m wrong though.

Cornettoninja · 05/11/2020 13:18

It depends on what infection levels look like. In reality there is no way to know whether this will be enough or whether they will need to tighten up more. It’s unpopular but my personal feeling is they need to clamp down on international travel. I don’t think the mad scrambles back to the UK to avoid quarantine in the summer did us any favours. It seems that countries who are strict on quarantine on entry appear to have a better handle on their situations.

When we do reopen it will be slowly, the same as last time I reckon. I do hope they’re sorting out track/trace and testing capacity this time round instead of fannying about.

Badbadbunny · 05/11/2020 13:18

Rishi has just extended the furlough scheme to March! That's not the actions of a government that thinks the lockdown will end at the start of December!

MiaMarshmallows · 05/11/2020 13:19

Not necessarily. Makes more sense to have a nationwide approach to furlough going into March to reflect the different tiers.

Torvean32 · 05/11/2020 13:20

I believe its 4 weeks then back into the tier sysyem. So its for your own benefit to follow the rules, and get in the lowest tier.

And I hope that people will start giving their real details (not made up) and actually answer the phone when they think someone from test/track and trace is phoning them! The sheer number of people that the test and trace couldn't contact made a mockery of the whole scheme. People NEED to give their details and engage if the system is to work.
ellentree · 05/11/2020 13:21

I think it will end and will go back to tiers. Furlough still needed, especially in tier 3 areas.

Thewiseoneincognito · 05/11/2020 13:27
  1. anyone foolish enough to believe it would only be 4 weeks lives on cloud cookoo.

  2. furlough scheme has now been extended to March. It’s going to be a long winter.

  3. New normal it would seem is now here. We need to adjust to a few months of semi normality and then a few months lockdown. This is it until a cure, which won’t happen for years, if ever.

AcornAutumn · 05/11/2020 13:29

sorry OP

the best case scenario is a break around Christmas, but apart from that, I think look to April.

I know they've announced extension to furlough - predictably - and I don't know what happens about small business, SEISS etc?

I really feel for you

Rosehip10 · 05/11/2020 13:48

@Greyshaggyrug No, that isn't what was said - the legislation for this lockdown ends on 2/12 and then parliament will vote on the way forward.

byvirtue · 05/11/2020 14:06

I think lockdown will end on the 4th and restart after Christmas maybe the 27th?

December is the best month of the year for most businesses and there is no way Rishi will want the country in lockdown. January by contrast is typically one of the slowest months of the year for businesses what with everyone being broke, miserable weather, dry January etc economically it makes more sense to have a lockdown then.

byvirtue · 05/11/2020 14:06

2nd even!

Quartz2208 · 05/11/2020 14:17

Having read the legislation it clearly says that

The restrictions will cease to have effect 28 days from the date on which these Regulations are made.

This means it will have to get through Parliament in order to get an extension (and not revert back to tiers).

Given yesterday its not a given that it would (if indeed he would try). Tory backbenchers were not that happy about passing yesterday the politics involved are not that straightforward

Vaccine news would change things I think and I expect at the very least there will be fairly high restrictions (hence furlough)

I suspect this is to enable opening in December and Christmas then a Jan lockdown

onedayinthefuture · 05/11/2020 14:36

@Thewiseoneincognito not very wise are you.

Greyshaggyrug · 05/11/2020 14:39

@Rosehip10

He said

Keir Starmer has said it would be 'madness' to abandon the second lockdown in England if cases are still rising on 2 December. In a clash at prime minister's questions, Boris Johnson avoided committing unequivocally to reopening the country by the start of the month, saying only that the measures would expire automatically on that date.

Quartz2208 · 05/11/2020 14:49

If the cases are still rising on 2 December we really are in trouble and surely proves a lockdown doesnt work anymore?

Either way it will be messy. The whip worked this time there is no guarantee it will next time. There was a significant number who abstain or voted against and some of those that followed the whip made it clear they might not next time

GU24Mum · 05/11/2020 15:31

i really think that the govt can't/won't risk crashing the high streets forever by not letting them open on 2nd Dec.

As it's all a balance I think they might keep leisure (gyms etc) closed and also get schools to finish early/go remote for a week or so to coincide with the shops re-opening.

Come mid-Jan if necessary they can shut the shops again (as their peak period plus sales will have finished) and let gyms etc open as that's then their peak time.

Viv0321 · 05/11/2020 15:51

NO. Because wales’ hasn’t.

QueenPaws · 05/11/2020 16:06

@Quartz2208 people aren't listening to the stay home. I'm WFH and can see my neighbours having visitors today. The road is like it is usually at peak times, and my work is mental!
