I work somewhere that sells a lot of non essential items. We also have an area of gardening/diy within the store.

I have been informed that the whole store will remain open during lockdown.

We closed during the first lockdown.
Apparently this time our business doesn't have to close.

I think if a lot of businesses are doing this then it's not going to be a very effective lockdown.

Unluckily I’ve the feeling many companies are claiming to be essential ... hope us as customers are more clever and don’t purchase in them. If we want this to finish soon ... we’d better all do something about it... even businesses

Bluntness100 · 04/11/2020 06:13

I also think a lot of places are trying to do this, ans fair enough, because if they shut their doors they may go bust and never reopen. Even the big chains.

I think as long as folks socially distance and comply with all the other rules then the virus will be squashed enough to go back to tiers in December.

maverickallthetime · 04/11/2020 06:13

If people are sensible then it will be fine. At least this means you have a job! I live in an area where cases have been dropping and that's before lockdown has started so it's perfectly possible for things to remain open.

Angel2702 · 04/11/2020 06:18

I don’t think shops are high risk and shouldn’t had to close at all. So many shops won’t recover from this so of course they will try and keep trading.

I agree with this.

If we went back to strict SD measures again within shops we will be ok.

Don’t be too quick to want businesses to shut down. Job security is very very important for the next coming months. ( unless you want to end up on benefits)

XmasIsComming · 04/11/2020 06:32

I am very grateful to still have my job.

I just think we need to have stricter measures to make a difference.

What's the point in doing a bit of a lockdown. It seems pointless.

And would you still feel this if they closed their doors for a month and you lost your job? For good?

Because that’s likely the choice they have faced.

TimeForLunch · 04/11/2020 06:42

Good. Ridiculous that shops are closing at all.

Marshyellow · 04/11/2020 06:44

Closing ships won't make a difference anyway, closing schools and unis would, but they need to stay open, this 'lockdown' is just for show.

TheSeedsOfADream · 04/11/2020 06:44

That's good OP isn't it?
Or am I missing something here?

slipperywhensparticus · 04/11/2020 06:47

I dont see why the government doesn't hire people to gindnout exactly where the infection rises are coming from and act accordingly

For example the secondary schools spike are they picking it up from home or each other? If its home where do their parents work? If that was in a non essential shop then I could see the point

It is pointless for people to lose businesses and jobs if they can still continue to trade.

The shop may not be essential for you, however it is for the people who run it, they still need to earn a living.

Bluntness100 · 04/11/2020 06:47

It’s really hard to tell on these threads if this is someone genuinely worried about corona and the effect of lock down or if it’s someone who thought they were getting furloughed and paid to stay home and is pissed they need to go to work.

🤷‍♀️

WhentheDealGoesDown · 04/11/2020 06:48

Why would you want your workplace to close, unless you were hoping for furlough

slipperywhensparticus · 04/11/2020 06:48

Gindout = workout i have eczema on my finger tips Blush

TheSeedsOfADream · 04/11/2020 06:48

I don't often agree with you Blunty but I think you've called that one. Grin

JamminDoughnuts · 04/11/2020 06:50

you should be relieved tbh op. you have a job.
why would anyone want furlough in November?

BarbaraofSeville · 04/11/2020 06:52

Types of shops that can remain open are set out in law. Your employer can stay open if they fall within the categories, it's not just down to selling non essential items, if they sell food, pet supplies or medicine, they can open.

But they will need the covid secure measures, capacity limits, hand sanitiser, cleaning stations and social distance markers.

If there's any ambiguity, then it's probably down to their lawyers vs those of the enforcing authority's.

delilabell · 04/11/2020 06:53

Op I agree with you. It's nothing to do with whether we agree with it or not it's that a non essential store is trying to keep open when it shouldn't.
And before anyone says I work in a school and husband does in an essential shop

nosswith · 04/11/2020 06:55

It seems from what I have read that your store probably can stay open.

Had SAGEs recommendation in late September been acted upon to some degree six weeks ago, then I think shop closures could have been completely avoided.

byvirtue · 04/11/2020 06:56

Don’t forget half the population are in tier 1 with low infection rates and businesses are being forced to close. I don’t blame any business owner trying to keep open if they can, losing yet another month of turnover will devastate some businesses, taking their forced closures this year to a third of a year.

Do we as taxpayers want to be bailing out businesses that could stay open but decide to close when they don’t need to?

Fedup21 · 04/11/2020 07:01

I agree-there are too many places staying open to make this a lockdown.

I agree with you and also think four weeks is not long enough.
BobsKnobs · 04/11/2020 07:07

I don’t get why shops are shutting. Most people are only in one for minutes, it’s easy to keep distanced. I suspect very little if any spread is from shops. There is little or no evidence behind supporting closing all these businesses.

hiredandsqueak · 04/11/2020 07:09

Can businesses stay open if they are covid safe even if they are considered non essential does anyone know? Our dog groomers is essentially drive through now so you drop the dog at the pen outside and leave without seeing the groomer and pick up from the crate inside having posted payment in a cash box. It seems overly harsh to close a business that has done everything in their power to be safe for all.
