DD 6 got purple lips at school today

I am slightly concerned. I know ventilation is a must and they have windows and doors open but I didnt expect my DD Yr1 to have been given a second jumper to put on because she was so cold her lips were purple. It actually makes me feel quite sad. Ive had a massive panic tonight about buying new clothes but I am working all day tomorrow and cant get anymore and delivery/ click and collect isnt until 13th nov!
I have spoken to other parents who say their children are hardy and would still wear shorts but my just turned 6 year old weighs 15kg and is tiny!

Oh, come on, people. Leave the OP alone.

Loads of kids are very skinny and still perfectly healthy. My ds (now grown) was ridiculously thin and tall and yet perfectly healthy. Only trousers he could wear were John Lewis XXL in an age 4 years younger than his chronological age. Kids clothes are now made for fat kids. Sorry, but it's true.

Her weight is not the issue. Her number of layers was and the OP is now fixing that.

Danglingmod · 04/11/2020 16:35

XX long obviously, not XX large (that would make no sense at all...)

SayakaMurata · 04/11/2020 16:41

I'm a teacher. Today at school I wore...

Thermal long johns and a long sleeved thermal top.
A polo neck jumper.
Thick corduroy trousers.
A long cardigan.
Thermal socks.
Fur lined boots.
A scarf.

... and I was warm enough. We have the windows open all day, and open the external door for extra ventilation during playtime, lunchtime and for 10 minutes or so in the afternoon. It was cold but necessary at the moment.

PeonyandDahlia · 04/11/2020 16:42

I think the reason people are commenting on the child's weight is simply because the OP posted about it. If the OP didn't want weight comments she wouldn't have posted her DD weight.

😂. What, all of them?

Anniemabel · 04/11/2020 16:45

Don’t panic, if she’s cold at school and school uniform isn’t warm enough just send her in normal clothes with a note. Trainers (or even snow boots if you have them) and thick socks are so much warmer than tights and the thin leather school shoes girls have to wear with their school uniform. I’m half expecting them to scrap uniform in school because of this.

She could wear a roll neck under her pinafore. My dc went to primary in Australia and wore these all the way through the winter with their school pinafores as it's freezing and they don't have heating in most schools or houses.

OP, I just wanted to say that my dd is on growth hormone and had every test under the sun because of her weight. She was actually heavier than your dd age 6 (or roughly the same). That would put her well below the 0.4th centile on the growth charts. My dd is also very well fed and they actually can't find anything 'wrong' with her. But since she's been on GH she is much more energy, able to regulate her body temp and a much bigger appetite.
I don't think people were having a go regarding her weight or insinuating she is underfed. But actually, from experience with my own dd, her weight is something that doctors would investigate Flowers.

But I stand by the other pp who said that you must have been living under a rock the last 2 months not to know it is freezing in schools.

Yip, lots of kids clothes are massive. Stuff literally falls of my skinny kid, my average kid wears stuff my skinny kid just couldn't, even at that you constantly need to pull stuff up.

I don't remember shops doing different fits for kids when I was young. M&S do, slim, regular and plus fit!!!

TheAirbender · 04/11/2020 17:05

When we went fo Lapland last year we bought hand and footwarmers from Decathalon. I think a couple in pockets/boots would really help on the worst days.

Danglingmod · 04/11/2020 17:06

Especially boys' clothes. Girls' are a little less "vanity sized" but still hard to fit a healthy, skinny kid.

Oh, I missed that! Shock. No, that's definitely a sign of the times.

My department are having a struggle with SLT about this at the moment - we want windows open but to let the children come dressed in really warm home clothes - we're not getting far!

LivingMyBestLifeNOT · 04/11/2020 21:36

Thanks everyone.I did feel 'Got at' I told you her size and weight because she is tiny (was premature) but she well everyday so I do not have a concern, shes just tall and skinny and yes clothes these days a made pretty big but thats my opinion, either right length but massive around waist or right waist but too short.

I have now got thermals and a couple pairs of trousers and a school fleece and today she was much warmer. I also contacted school and they have taken this on board

Is the heating on at the school?
I've just seen one place hasn't put the heating on. The mind set needs to urgently change.. We must have ventilation and heating, it's in the d of e guidelines.

I'm all for windows open, warmer clothes, hand hotties.. Thermals, adapting the lessons to fit in movement... Etc.

tillyandmilly · 04/11/2020 21:43

get a grip! - schools have to have windows open for ventilation! -
just layer up - I went on a bus today opening all the windows! just layer up!

sunshinecounty · 04/11/2020 21:51

I teach in a primary school. Today I wore a vest, merino base layer, dress and cardigan. Then half way through the morning I needed to put my coat on as it was sooo cold. Some classrooms seem colder than others. Ours is freezing. I'm dreading January- when it gets really cold.
Xx

Flatwhite32 · 04/11/2020 22:06

@tillyandmilly were you on that bus for over 6 hours?

LivingMyBestLifeNOT · 04/11/2020 22:23

tillyandmilly you get a grip thanks!

Buses have reaegood heaters, though. You normally need to open the windows to be able to breathe Grin

Notcontent · 04/11/2020 23:07

This is going to be an issue over winter. I am in London and until now it hasn’t really been that cold. But today it was really cold - quite frosty this morning. Fine if you are running around outside, but not great if you are sitting still in the cold.

DianaT1969 · 04/11/2020 23:07

What was she wearing today? If she was only wearing a shirt and cardigan, no wonder she was freezing!! She needs a long sleeve thermal vest under her shirt, and a fleece on top of her cardigan - minimum. Black thermal tights or leggings over her tights.

adagio · 05/11/2020 06:41

Not sure is already suggested, but my kids both prefer plain black leggings and socks to tights (primary, and to be honest they look like tights from a distance). This year we will be going for tights plus socks/leggings on top when it gets super cold in school, then vest, long sleeve top, school t shirt, dress or skirt, jumper, and I need to buy some fleeces ideally in a schoolish colour so whoever said that to upthread it’s a great idea. (I was thinking hoody’s as another layer). Plus outer ware.
