I am slightly concerned. I know ventilation is a must and they have windows and doors open but I didnt expect my DD Yr1 to have been given a second jumper to put on because she was so cold her lips were purple. It actually makes me feel quite sad. Ive had a massive panic tonight about buying new clothes but I am working all day tomorrow and cant get anymore and delivery/ click and collect isnt until 13th nov!
I have spoken to other parents who say their children are hardy and would still wear shorts but my just turned 6 year old weighs 15kg and is tiny!

I’m a teacher and sympathise as I come home freezing too! We have to keep windows open though as that is only way we can keep classrooms Covid secure in absence of masks. We’ve relaxed normal uniform requirements and even wear our coats in class when needed. Teaching unions have raised this with Government but not sure what else can be done if schools are to stay open. School budgets are so stretched there doesn’t seem to be any extra for Covid issues like extra cleaning, heating or supply cover. I would layer her up as much as possible.

Sunshinegirl82 · 04/11/2020 06:41

I have bought long sleeved thermal vests and long Johns which go under uniform plus a really warm fleece jacket in a size up to go over the top. So far that seems to be working but I've also bought a gilet coat to go in as well as a further layer. Fingerless gloves might also help? Also maybe a scarf or snood? I wouldn't worry about waiting for the school fleece just buy a generic one and send it in for now.

Were you given a finder by the school about extra clothes? Because ASA secondary we have numerous times (finally kids are listening) and my dc primary have too. My youngest is a year older than your dd and is only 3kg more, so I do get your issue. She also goes blue when cold. However, my dd has been wearing trousers for a while (as in last couple of years) so you will be able to find some. She has a few from Asda that are her favourites. Just the pull on ones like jersey leggings (but flared at bottom). She wears an age lower than other clothes. Sainsbury's are also excellent for little uniform in general.
She also wears thermal underwear. But basically a pair of legging under her trousers and a long sleeved top under her polo shirt will do.
You're all blaming the teacher but actually, sorry OP, I think this is on you. It's been on here constantly that windows are open. Schools have communicated it, it's on social media, in the news etc. If you sent her in in what you said up thread, I'd be saying no bloody wonder she was freezing!
Extra pair of tights and black leggings today under her pinafore. A long sleeved top and best under her polo and two jumpers/cardies. Has she got a gillet she could take as it will be easier than wearing a coat inside when writing etc.

Did you actually see her purple lips or did they tell you? Or she tell you?

user1471530109 · 04/11/2020 06:59

*reminder. Loads of other typos too. But hopefully you can get the gist.

cheeseychovolate · 04/11/2020 07:02

Have you tried ordering from next, you may be able to get next day delivery to your home? I pay £20 a year for home delivery

NightRiders · 04/11/2020 07:04

In Gap you can get fleece lined leggings and also tracksuit bottoms and hoodies that are Sherpa lined and really warm without being bulky.

One of my DD's is very slight and she wore H&M treggings for school.

cheeseychovolate · 04/11/2020 07:04

Also John Lewis and Next do girls thermal tights

Thesunrising · 04/11/2020 07:07

My very small daughter is equally tiny with not a picking of natural insulation.

Thin layers and lots of them. Uniqlo does great Heattech thermals - long sleeve vests, short sleeve vests and thermal tights.

Wristees (wrist warmers) and neck warmers also help without limiting her movement.

Better than being sat in a big thick coat which can be too bulky.

NannyMcphee39 · 04/11/2020 07:09

I would be more concerned about her weight, sounds very underweight to me. A trip to the GP would be advisable.

Marsis · 04/11/2020 07:09

Try decathlon for cheap but effective’base layers’

tissueboxx · 04/11/2020 07:09

Where is she sitting op? If she's right next to the open window or door as well as extra layers it would also be worth asking for her to be moved.

Glenthebattleostrich · 04/11/2020 07:13

We bought ski base layers from decathlon, £2.50 each for tops and leggings. She also wears my wool walking socks and boots.

Happymum12345 · 04/11/2020 07:14

Teachers are also freezing cold! What other job is there at the moment where people work with no protection in a crowded room? I know young children are less likely to spread the virus, but there are two adults in the room too. The windows need to be open. It’s the parents job to make sure children go to school with lots of layers on & I’m sure the school would allow other clothes to be worn that are not uniform if it meant your dc was comfortably warm at school.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/11/2020 07:14

As has already been said, it's not a secret that the classrooms have to be kept well ventilated a the moment. Why didn't you make sure that your child was warmly dressed with base layers, etc, if she's as tiny as you say and feels the cold?

glitterelf · 04/11/2020 07:15

It's not even that cold yet but it amazes me how every jumps to saying layer up but seem to forget that sitting sedentary for long periods no matter how many layers children will still be cold especially when the temperature drops further.
What happens then when layers are not enough ? When children and staff struggle to work ?

KatherineOfGaunt · 04/11/2020 07:17

@jessstan1

I think it is appalling. I wouldn't sit in such cold conditions, my fingers and toes would be frozen, but your daughter is a child and cannot just walk out! I hope you find what you want in Matalan tomorrow. A scarf, thick tights and fingerless gloves would help.

Is this the way schools are at the moment? I honestly didn't realise that.

I work in a school and the staff were told yesterday to bring in extra clothes to put on if we get cold in the classrooms, as the windows will be open to provide ventilation.

So yes, it's the reality for many. I'm not sure what they'll do when it gets really cold!

InTheLongGrass · 04/11/2020 07:19

Not am immediate solution, as you will need to order but M&S do e tra long school trousers (at least they do in boys). You can go down one age bracket for long, and 2 age brackets for extra long - basically age 4 extra long is the length of age 6 trousers, with an age 4 waist. They are also adjustable waists. These make school trousers manageable for my slim sin.
Tights under trousers are warmer than a pinafore.
Vests (long sleeved teeshirts?) under her shirt. Jumper, fleece. Could she wear fingerless gloves in the classroom?
Can she move desk further away from the window/door?
Would she eat, and are school providing, a hot school lunch?
Being cold is miserable. I hope you find a solution.

Danglingmod · 04/11/2020 07:20

I don't know what's going to happen, glitterelf.

I teach secondary and it's bloody freezing. I taught a class yesterday where they genuinely were all wearing extra layers, vests, jumpers, skins under trousers and I still had to let two or three wear coats. I'm wearing fingerless gloves and a big blanket scarf as well as two pairs of tights and five layers on the top half.

I'm not sure what's going to happen in January because I sure as hell am not closing any windows or doors when I have 30 adult sized bodies in a room smaller than my living room breathing all forwards towards me.

It sounds like your doesn't even wear tights, OP? You must sort that our - surely leggings would be fine under trousers?

WrongKindOfFace · 04/11/2020 07:20

You can get fleece lined tights which are much warmer than standard tights.

candycane222 · 04/11/2020 07:23

My daughter was tiny too. Vest tucked into toghts. Long sleeved thermal or indded any snug top under school blouse. Tights under trousers, thermal tights, shoes with a thick sole. And I had to take in all the waists off dds trousers. Just s few stitches - like making a small pleat, one each side.

Also you can get little hand warmers that you 'snap' to heat, then ' recharge' in a pan of hot water in the evening.

Sirzy · 04/11/2020 07:23

Look at M and S for trousers. My son is underweight and they are the only trousers that fit him properly.

If she is feeling the cold more than her peers talk to the teacher about her position in the class, make sure she isn’t sat near windows or anything

MillieVanilla · 04/11/2020 07:24

With trousers my DD had a tiny figure (she's still Tony in the waist) I used to be able to get the adjustable waist trousers from supermarkets and they were fine. In winter when it was really cold she used to wear tights underneath and I always had thermal vests too which kept her toasty
