Hi
So I was speaking with a relative (NHS professional) yesterday whom was discussing the anticipated vaccine. So we are in lockdown and things wont change really til we get a vaccine. Yet lots of people you talk to do not want the vaccine.

So would you have the vaccine tomorrow if it was available to everyone
Yea - ofcourse I would and my children as well.

No - I want more research first

Yes but I wouldn't be the first in line for it. I'd want to see how others reacted to it first.

lunar1 · 02/11/2020 22:46

Yep. I imagine it won't matter in the uk if people don't have it because people are encouraged to do what feels right to themselves.

We don't have much emphasis on community. Opportunities for travel abroad will probably be limited for people refusing.

Our government is probably to soft/stupid to make proof of vaccination a condition of entry to the uk sadly.

campion · 02/11/2020 22:46

I volunteered but didn't make the cut but DH did and he's had 2 doses. It may have been the control and he won't know which for another 11 months. He's fine anyway.

So the answer to your question is obviously yes. I'm astonished that any sane person would refuse. My adult DS is recovering from covid and it's knocked him for six and his was in the 'mild' category. I'll take my chance with a vaccine, thanks.

tinkerbellla · 02/11/2020 22:49

Yes please!

Numberblock7 · 02/11/2020 22:50

Depends which vaccine and the characteristics of it. Russian/Chinese, no chance. An Oxford/Imperial/Moderna/J&J etc one, with demonstrated ability to prevent serious disease (even if not transmission) and a decent safety profile, then yes, sign me up. But as someone with pretty much no risk factors I’m not expecting to be offered any vaccine anytime soon.

But I think any vaccine tomorrow is irresponsible - what happens if they give out something that’s 40% effective as an emergency, but actually if we had waited a few more weeks we’d have seen another was 75% effective? How many people would just keep coming back for more vaccines, even if it was safe to do that? Obviously you’ll never have all the data, but I’d rather see the data for a few vaccines before deciding to have one.

Sunshinegirl82 · 02/11/2020 22:50

@SheepandCow

I'm still breastfeeding and so they said that ruled me out. Sarah Gilbert's adult children are all in the Oxford trial so I'm guessing she's pretty confident about the safety profile of that vaccine!

Alexandernevermind · 02/11/2020 22:51

I hope your son makes a fast recovery @campion.
I'll have my vaccine as soon as it is offered and so will my children. DH is being a dick about it is saying he won't.

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/11/2020 22:53

I will!

Bananasandorangesss · 02/11/2020 22:57

Nope - want it to be around 5 years or so before I subject myself to it - At the end of the day Covid is low risk for the majority

campion · 02/11/2020 22:58

Thanks Alexandernevermind. He's just texted me to say he's cooking a chicken Kiev so that's a good sign.
He eats at strange times as he works shifts so this is a sign of normality returning I hope Grin. Not back at work though.

HairyFloppins · 02/11/2020 23:00

Yes

Whysrumgone · 02/11/2020 23:02

I would have before I caught covid, but I’ve got it now, and while it’s a bit shit it’s nowhere near as bad as I thought it’d be. I’d only get the vaccination if there were more cases of people catching it more than once

IcedPurple · 02/11/2020 23:03

I'd be rolling up my sleeve right this minute if a vaccine were available.

Drbrowns · 02/11/2020 23:03

Yes

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 02/11/2020 23:06

Yes, and am part of a phase 3 trial. I believe in medical science and want to find a way out of this. A vaccine is the solution and I’m therefore happy with taking what I perceive to be a very small risk to play my part in achieving it. In due course I’ll find out if I had the vaccine or placebo, and I will then be lining up for a vaccine if I’m not already protected.

TooTrueToBeGood · 02/11/2020 23:07

Do ppl not realise how many ppl the vaccines are tested on during 3 stages of testing.

Evidently not. Too many people would rather believe conspiracy peddling fuckwits who probably flunked high school biology than trust in the actual experts.

FancySomeChips · 02/11/2020 23:13

Not a chance.
I don’t care about never travelling abroad again, so limiting travel wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

LeSquigh · 02/11/2020 23:15

No, I won't. I am not an anti vaxxer, I have paid for my kids to have the chicken pox vaccine on top of the ones that the NHS provides, however a vaccine normally goes through a lot more trials than this will and i am not going to subject myself or my kids to a vaccine with unknown long term side effects, especially when none of us are in an at risk group. As a PP said, I would also like to see how this goes five or ten years from now.

I believe that the fastest vaccine ever created so far was for mumps and that took 4? years. I have also read (and am happy to be corrected) that there has never been a vaccine for any of the other human coronaviruses so it may be a lot more difficult to create one than we might be led to believe.

I am also very confused as to how a vaccine can be created when antibodies don't seem to hanging around for very long. I am quite uneducated on this but isn't that how vaccines work?

Racoonworld · 02/11/2020 23:20

Yes definitely. I want this to end I’d have anything!

37weekswithno2 · 02/11/2020 23:23

Any vaccine won't be available to most people anyway, for quite a while at least. I don't think any children at all will be offered it.

HairyToity · 03/11/2020 07:29

Back in March I'd have said no. Now we're in December - where do I sign?

HairyToity · 03/11/2020 07:30

November even!

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 03/11/2020 07:50

[quote DrizzleandDamp]No - not for a vaccine they companies producing it won’t take liability for.

That’s not really an accurate précis of the situation.

Sunshinegirl82 · 03/11/2020 07:50

@LeSquigh

As a general supporter of vaccines I really think that if you looked into it a bit you'd be really reassured about the vaccine generally. Most vaccines are hugely delayed by red tape and funding issues (which don't exist here).

This podcast with Sarah Gilbert is really good and reassuring:

Sloth169 · 03/11/2020 07:54

My husband works for Astra Zeneca, we will 100% have the vaccine.

I am front line NHS so will likely be early in line to receive it. Husband will have it as soon as it is released as work will provide it.
