So how likely is it that MPs vote against the lockdown on Weds?

I’m hazarding a guess fairly unlikely?

But if they do does the govt have to accept the vote?

No, it's ok, if they vote against we'll just have a snap election. 👍

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/11/2020 22:58

Excellent...can we shoe horn one in before Brexit?! 🙈😂

There’ll be a few Conservative rebels but the Labour Party will vote for so it’ll pass no problem.

Dan1980 · 01/11/2020 23:00

Tories have a huge majority and MPs that vote against it are being threatened with being " deselection " Factor in Starmer the leader of the opposition supporting lockdown, I'd say the chances of it not going through parliament are zero

ShellsAndSunrises · 01/11/2020 23:00

It’ll pass. Labour have said they’ll support it. There will be some backbenchers who vote against it because they don’t agree to another lockdown, but they’ll get the numbers it needs to pass.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 01/11/2020 23:00

Agreed, Labour are pro lockdown so it will go through.

Dan1980 · 01/11/2020 23:00

deselected *

Dustballs · 01/11/2020 23:04

Might they vote against the lockdown going beyond Dec 2nd though?

Unless agreed by parliament perhaps ...

Dustballs · 01/11/2020 23:04

Labour might support that?

HeddaGarbled · 02/11/2020 00:30

Unlikely. Someone would have to table an amendment and no-one’s showing any appetite for that at the moment. Labour are generally more in favour of lockdown than Conservatives.

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 00:32

Why hasnt Starmer gone for a vote of no confidence against the Government

HeddaGarbled · 02/11/2020 00:35

Because that wouldn’t be very helpful in the middle of a pandemic and he’s not an arse?

This.

As others have said, Labour are in favour of listening to the science and they therefore support containment measures.

Perhaps the more right wing anti containment MPs will defect to Nigel Farage's new Anti Lockdown party? When he sets it up. Presumably he's a bit too busy until after the US election. (He's currently in the US helping on the Trump campaign.)

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 01:37

Farage is a cunt who will jump on any bandwagon that suits his agenda at the time.

HeddaGarbled · 02/11/2020 02:04

Or, Starmer knows Johnson’s going to take the flak for all this and is content to let that play out.

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 02:07

True. Bet Johnson is wishing that they didnt win last December now

HeddaGarbled · 02/11/2020 02:11

Yup, not what he was expecting. I almost feel sorry for him.

lovelemoncurd · 02/11/2020 02:38

I can't believe some backbenchers are opposing this. Do they want to see us using ice rinks as morgues?

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 02/11/2020 06:43

Eh? Brexit took place months ago. The UK has left the European Union and we are just negotiating to see if we can negotiate a trade deal before the end of this year.

Mistigri · 02/11/2020 07:10

Chance of govt losing this is zero because they are implementing a policy that Keir Starmer proposed a few weeks ago and the Labour Party will certainly vote for.

I think there will be an embarrassing Tory rebellion though - Farage is obviously planning to capitalise on this with his new anti-lockdown party. I wonder if any Tory MPs will defect.

Monty27 · 02/11/2020 07:13

It'll be all about the whip

poshme · 02/11/2020 07:22

Tory MPs won't defect to Farage. They know if they do they'll never win another election.

Karmer won't do a vote of no confidence because the government have an 80 seat majority. Even with unhappy Tory MPs, he'd lose.

blueangel19 · 02/11/2020 07:48

So if Labour were in charge we would be in lockdown already. Well well...

Ecosse · 02/11/2020 08:15

There is no evidence of these catastrophic projections every coming true @lovelemoncurd.
