Wakes?

Does anyone know what the situation is re wakes under the new lockdown?

I’ve seen that funerals have guidance (up to 30) but nothing about wakes.

Previously 15 could go to a wake - is that not the case now do you think?

Of course big problem is all the pubs/restaurants where you might hold a wake will be closed!

We are in the sad situation of knowing we will be having to attend a funeral during lockdown hence why I am wondering. Wakes are such a crucial part of the healing/grieving process it would be very hard not to do something.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with a bereavement. I know how important wakes are - strong part of my heritage. I don't think you can do it. I can only suggest a virtual one but I'm guessing that older people might find that hard.

We had to attend a funeral in the summer. The rules about funerals applies to the actual funeral service only, not the wake. So I imagine wakes won't be permitted under current rules.

It's pretty shit. But in some ways I was glad in our case it was immediate family only.

We had a family funeral at the beginning of October. No wake, under rule of 6. Small family groups went for some food at separate venues, Not an option now, unfortunately.

Thanks everyone. I’ve checked our crematorium and they only have seating for 20 with another 6 standing in the entrance hall. It is what it is I suppose and the service is the most important part of course. But it will be very sad not being able to have a drink Afterwards and remember the person who we will be saying bye to.

I just read the guidance. 30 for funerals themselves...

Linked ceremonial events such as stone settings and ash scatterings can also continue with up to 15 people in attendance.

My dad died about a month ago, and the rules (Scotland) were that you could have a wake for up to 15 people in a registered venue. In reality, there were no registered venues offering this service.

Whatever rules you come across, you need to drill down to the practicalities in your area.
