I know I am not alone in this. It's just another shitty day in this bloody nightmare.

It isn't the turkey and sprouts they're dangling is it, it's family. If Christmas has bad associations for you then the constant "let's do it for Christmas" is going to be triggering. But we're not doing it for Christmas. Were doing it to try and save lives - where from Corona virus or other illnesses which require the NHS or poor mental health from lockdown.

The only way we'll get out is through

7Days · 01/11/2020 01:37

Nah let's focus on some random date...Tuesday the 16th of November, say... any day is the same as another

Fick the Turkey and the presents and all the nonsense if you like, no one had a gun to your head the last 40 years.
But its daft to pretend Cheistmas doesnt have a cultural significance, most people do look forward to it and plan for it.

If getting together with family on a midwinter festival thats been celebrated for 2000 years plus, through wars, invasions, other epidemics, isnt a reason to plod through a necessary period of shite, what is?

MayDayFightsBack · 01/11/2020 01:38

It's a light lockdown in comparison to what other countries have had inflicted on them. In the lockdown in Victoria, Australia, you could not leave your home for 23 hours a day and had to get all essential shopping and exercise in the other hour, all socially distanced and wearing masks - and not more than 5km from your home. No effing about in and out for 'exercise' or people going to school or university etc. Lockdown meant you were properly locked down most of the time.

MayDayFightsBack · 01/11/2020 01:39

I also meant to say. YANBU OP.

BlackPetunia · 01/11/2020 01:40

@MayDayFightsBack it’s definitely’light lockdown’ you are right!

imtired1234 · 01/11/2020 01:44

It is not light and anyone who thinks so is an absolute fool 😂😂😂😂😂😂

HappydaysArehere · 01/11/2020 01:47

This is, as unusual, too late and to allow secondary schools to operate as if somehow they are not part of the community is another example of the incompetence of this government.

imtired1234 · 01/11/2020 01:48

@HappydaysArehere thank you. It's absolutely ridiculous

MiniMum97 · 01/11/2020 01:48

@Peppafrig

I hear you it will just be even more depressing when Christmas is over and there is nothing to look forward too. January is usually depressing enough .
Oh God. Covid and January. What a depressing thought...

I wouldn't go that far but I don't 'get' the 'saving Christmas' business; I mean, will it kill anyone to have a quiet Christmas with only your household for once? I'm sure many will actually prefer it that way.
Barryisland · 01/11/2020 01:53

Don’t do Christmas if you don’t want to. It’s a religious festival and in my opinion if you don’t believe or celebrate the religious side of it you shouldn’t be joining in with the rest of it. Too much overindulgence and money spent and not enough though re the true meaning of Christmas.

Mamanyt · 01/11/2020 01:56

@DeRigueurMortis

I hate this idea that we are doing this now to "save Christmas".

We doing to save lives and frankly I'll be furious if the restrictions are lifted to an extent that hundreds of thousands of people will be travelling round the country, mixing households to celebrate one day.

The truth as I see it is that life is going to be restricted until we get a vaccine.

There's no point sugar coating it.

Don't get overly excited about that vaccine. We are now realizing that people re-infect in weeks to months, so any vaccine MIGHT have to be repeated every month or two for true protection. Some will, some won't.
Forgetmenot157 · 01/11/2020 01:57

I actually think this year that Christmas is more important than ever. It will give our children's who mental health has already taken a hit, something to concentrate on and look forward too.. Over the next 2 months Christmas will help us keep the kids entertained from, Christmas movies to baking cookies, to decorating the tree to decorating the house. To walking around at night and seeing the Christmas lights to having Christmas songs blaring out.

Yes there May not be Christmas parties etc for the adults and trips to the pub etc. However kids don't care about that stuff. Let them half a shining light in this shit shower of a year.

Fuck me if during a world war people can use Christmas as a time to drop the weapons and be happy for a day, then I'm sure some grumpy ass scrooges can do the same for the young of the country.

They need this time of happiness. It helps them think about something different than what the world Is currently like. Regardless of whether this lockdown works or not, people Will be spending it with their families and there isn't anything Boris can do to stop them. He knows this.

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2020 01:58

Christmas won't be the same, but all I want is a quiet day with DH and our boys. Our extended family has had a shit year even without Covid. I'm normally a positive sort but I'm being tested to the limit right now.

switswooo · 01/11/2020 02:01

I enjoyed this tweet.

I appreciate that but even if we have to keep re-vaccinating it would allow some normality.

pinpinbin · 01/11/2020 02:06

That's really not true.

1forAll74 · 01/11/2020 02:13

You can always still watch the Queens Christmas message on TV. She will most likely wish everyone well, and say that she knows how sad lots of people will be. !!

Your talking about children's mental health ...... don't you think the lockdown is going to make that worse 🥴🥴🥴🥴........ they could of had Christmas with their family in their home regardless of a lockdown or not this lockdown is absolutely pointless all this just for one day so people can sit down and pull crackers together. Absolutely ridiculous SOME of us this lockdown is going to have a huge negative effect myself being 35 weeks pregnant one of them!!!!!

If that's the case then so be it. Re vaccinate how ever many times I don't care this needs to go away
Codswallop20 · 01/11/2020 02:24

Schools should be shut, this 'lockdown' is pointless otherwise. I don't want them to shut, I want my kids to have an education but life is so far from normal.

As for Christmas, forget any family gatherings or parties. Carrot dangling to get us to behave.

We should all bloody behave because if we don't it all lasts longer and is worse in the hospitals. Don't slip and break anything!

Have not RTWT but OP I completely agree with you.

Shitfuckoh · 01/11/2020 02:48

Well I like Christmas. Only be celebrating it at home with the DC though, no gatherings. It has to go ahead this year though, it just has to. How else will we have the threads moaning about the inlaws?!

amusedtodeath1 · 01/11/2020 02:55

I'm pretty sure that given the statistics we would be locking down even if Christmas wasn't close?

I get that you might not like Christmas and I agree using it as an "incentive" is stupid, but that's not really why this is happening.
