If it's OK for teachers to have to carry on working....

If it's OK for teachers to have to carry on working, why isn't it OK for MPs to go back to Parliament and work no PPE and no social distancing? These MPs know how dangerous it is out there and there's no way they'll put themselves in danger, but they're quite happy to throw teachers under the bus. And by the way, I'm not a teacher, I'm an appalled parent.

@ShatnersBaboon my bloody point exactly! Look at the rest of Europe? Why are we always so far behind. I'm appalled by some of the attitudes of parents on here. Teachers aren't asking for a month of work! We are asking for the same rights as every other keyworker.

CraftyGin · 31/10/2020 21:39

I SD from students and other adults at school. I never get closer than one metre, where I wear a face covering and lab coat. I avoid getting that close if possible. I don’t share paper in most lessons. Any written tests they do don’t get marked for at least 72hrs.

BlackPetunia · 31/10/2020 21:40

do you all wear a mask doing the school run though? dropping the kids off?

Crakeandoryx · 31/10/2020 21:43

Not this again! Teachers are not the only essential workers expected to go to work at an increased risk.

Crakeandoryx · 31/10/2020 21:44

Not this again!

Yes, we have to.
MintyMabel · 31/10/2020 21:45

It is not valued and they are not protected.

Oh give over. Are you suggesting nobody values teachers? Seriously?

Their jobs are far more protected than most in the private sector at the moment.

BlackPetunia · 31/10/2020 21:47

@Ignoringequally fabulous, you comply and wear a mask! and it stops there......because the teachers then take over from you and are not allowed to wear masks

oh, the irony!!

Has anyone said this? No. Pointless comment
Lacenderseas · 31/10/2020 21:49

*How many times? It's about reducing overall contact, so if people who can wfh do so, the risk is reduced for everyone.

I'm a teacher too and I'm really sick of hearing this now. If you don't think your role is important enough to carry on, go and do something else.*

Thank you.

I'm afraid much of the vitriol aimed at teachers has been brought on us by the attitudes of our colleagues, who refuse to recognise how lucky we are.

Complete drivel.
Most of it is driven by posters that hate teachers and see them as an easy target.

The rest is teachers coming on and correcting posters that they have no idea what they are posting about.

AnoDeLosMuertos · 31/10/2020 21:51

@ShatnersBaboon

It's fairly shit for everyone who can't work at home. Teachers can wear a mask and maintain a 1m distance from others if they choose to, just like shop workers, bus drivers, social workers, bank clerks...
You don’t have a clue!!!

Also, I don’t see dentists increasing their patient appointments!!

crazyfrogs · 31/10/2020 21:52

Maybe it's because MPs recognise that school staff actually do a more important job than they do Grin

Loshad · 31/10/2020 21:52

@CraftyGin
We have the 72h rule also. Pointless. Both EDCD and CDC ( European and US centres for disease control)have found not a single case of fomite transmission, far better to sack that off and concentrate on the real transmission issues.

FreekStar · 31/10/2020 21:52

Plenty of people will continue working through lockdown.

But is anyone else working without PPE or social distancing?

Leflic · 31/10/2020 21:52

We’re key workers. The status that got us preferential treatment on buying houses amongst other things.
Turns out that what the country really needs when the shit hits the fan are farmers, supermarket staff, nurses with someone to do childcare. But hey ho. Keep complaining whilst the rest of the key workers just get on with it.

Lacenderseas · 31/10/2020 21:53

*My MP goes into parliament but that is from a constituency 10 miles away. Most MPs are not close to London, and having them commute adds its risks. It’s important that they spend time in their constituencies for surgeries, so not really an option to move permanently to London. They can do a fairly decent job via video link.

Teaching can be done via video link (as I did in the summer term) but it is not as good as face to face.*

Good explanation.

Teaching is so much better if done in person.
MPs jobs' can be easily done by video link.

Have you ever been in a classroom with young children? Or one with children with SEND? Or with challenging teenagers?

No. Thought not.

Hercwasonaroll · 31/10/2020 21:55

Teachers can wear a mask and maintain a 1m distance from others if they choose to,

Not all teachers can wear a mask. DfE have advised against it.

Maintaining a 1m distance is nigh on impossible in most rooms I teach in. Also crap for learning if I can't see kids work.

Lacenderseas · 31/10/2020 21:57

I respect teachers and have teacher friends.

But there have been lots of threads here recently of teachers complaining, calling parents selfish for wanting our children in education. That actually saddens me, and I hope it doesn't reflect all teachers views

whiskybysidedoor · 31/10/2020 21:58

Yes lot of people are. I don’t mean this as bitchy as it sounds but you aren’t going to get them moaning like teachers as in many of these jobs the moaning just wouldn’t be tolerated. Use your imagination.

timeforanewstart · 31/10/2020 21:58

Its not just teachers though is it

I’ve managed for seven weeks.
timeforanewstart · 31/10/2020 22:00

In my dc secondary teachers are maintaining the distance , they also allow masks for those that want to wear them so schools seem to be able to put in place restrictions of they want

What jobs are in tightly packed corridors nose to nose with 250 others 5 times a day?
