So are gyms staying open or what?

Can’t see anything about it, just that we can exercise outside.

Anyone know?

My commiserations to all who are going to miss sporting and leisure activities again Flowers.

I was really hoping leisure centres would be able to stay open with stricter measures like changing rooms completely closed, lower numbers etc. My gym already enforces one way in and out, masks in all communal areas and booked slots. Rarely more than 20 people in there and it’s a very big gym. I can see how the pool is a problem with use of the changing rooms. People also don’t seem to understand you need to keep your distance in there as well! That’s why I stopped going and stopped taking DC. Chlorine may kill the virus in the water but it won’t kill exhaled droplets directly in your face!

I’m so gutted. I’d only just got back to pre lockdown weight lifting which had sorted out my back again. It was bearable doing long walks in lovely sunshine and getting a great tan while doing it, during the first lockdown. Bit different doing it in freezing cold, wet, grey, shit weather!

Exercise is so important for the immune system, especially during winter, when we don’t get enough natural vitamin D.

My MH is fucked without it too. Thank god DC still going to school < small silver liningGrin.

I'll have to rearrange my work days. I used to go to the gym after work. Now I'll be walking I'll have to have an extended lunch so I can get some exercise while it is light.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 01/11/2020 06:37

The meeting one person for exercise is only for those who live alone, too:

“to exercise outdoors or visit an outdoor public place - with the people you live with, with your support bubble or, when on your own, with 1 person from another household”

Everyone needs to read the rules spelled out on the Gvt website;

www.gov.uk/guidance/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november

Really upset about gyms. I've only just felt like I've built my fitness and weightlifting back to where it was before lockdown. It's impossible to recreate the intensity/equipment at home unless I was very rich and lived in a bigger house.

I don’t think it is and I’ve read the guidelines. It doesn’t say if you live alone. It says when on your own you can meet one other person from another household. I take it to mean your household can’t meet one other person thus forming a group.

But that I can leave my family at home and meet a friend for a walk.

Bringonspring · 01/11/2020 07:07

I am also super sad about this.

KatherineJaneway · 01/11/2020 07:25

@12frogsincoats

I am bloody devastated about gyms. I am obese. I also had a suicidal breakdown recently. Not to mention suffering from SAD meaning things can only get worse as we approach winter.

They are now closing the only thing that is keeping my mental (and physical) health together.

I can't see myself surviving to see the end of this second lockdown

JacobReesMogadishu yes, on re-reading I think you are right.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 01/11/2020 07:54

@12frogsincoats are you in S London by any chance? If you are I would be happy to meet up with you, at a distance, for in-park exercise under the ‘one person’ rule.

I read gyms closed and parks and outdoor playgrounds open. Golf courses and amateur sports closed but professional sports can continue (because of course no professional football player has had it 😉).

Lurkingforawhile · 01/11/2020 08:07

Interesting that professional sport has basically got the kind of testing that PM talked about (not the fast tests, but all of them being tested very regularly) and that's what allows them to carry on. Testing has to be at the heart of the solution.

Professional athletes are tested before every event. That's how they're able to carry on.
borageforager · 01/11/2020 08:14

TazMac rambling has been my mum’s lifeline too. Gutted that it’s closing. She’s been walking twice a week to keep her sane.

This is true but a friend works for a major premiership club. They have testing sorted (everyone every few days) but are paying for it themselves at Vast cost. Less rich clubs probably have to rely on the same system as the rest of us.
Lonecatwithkitten · 01/11/2020 08:25

@Lurkingforawhile the standard in professional sport is everyone every 48 hours and the sport pays. My DP set up the system for a particular sport it is costing a kings ransom.
Everyone is only in their team bubble ( his is non contact), their are fines and disqualifications for breaching the sports Covid rules.

Lurkingforawhile · 01/11/2020 08:31

Yes, I know that athletes / footballers are tested privately and it costs a fortune. My championship club is doing it too so not just PL. My point (which I failed to make!) was that was exactly the kind of testing Boris was talking about when he talked about whole cities being tested, ie not just those with symptoms but a massive population. I've no idea if it's viable but just thought it was interesting.

Sirzy · 01/11/2020 08:31

On a personal selfish level I am really worried about my mental health without the sanctuary of the gym.

My Pt is hoping she can do 1-1 outdoors sessions which would be something at least

Branleuse · 01/11/2020 08:36

Can my cleaner still come?
Im pretty gutted about all of it.

Lurkingforawhile · 01/11/2020 08:39

I wondered that @Branleuse. Does it come under work you can't do at home so they can still work?

user1471464218 · 01/11/2020 08:42

In Northern Ireland we are halfway through our 4 week lockdown lite. Gyms are open for personal training (1 to 1 only, no group sessions) and for individual training such as weights section, cardio machines..... but not open for classes. There is presumably some science behind this decision. I'm just glad gyms are open tbh. But I don't understand it....

TazMac · 01/11/2020 08:45

@borageforager

It has so many physical and mental benefits. An underrated hobby. Hope you’re mum is ok. I’m thinking of messaging a few people I’ve met and seeing if anyone is up for meeting up 1:1 for a walk.

Sending you support, sounds like a really tough time for you. Hope you can stay safe.

Have you tried running ? A lot of people have good results with the couch to 5k. If not, there are loads of exercise videos on YouTube for free. It's not the same I know but it could be something.

Delatron · 01/11/2020 08:53

I was wondering cleaners too? Does that come under work you can’t do in your own home?

Delatron · 01/11/2020 08:55

It’s devastating about gyms. Excercise is vital for mental health. Running is my saviour at the moment but I know it’s not for everyone.

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/11/2020 08:56

My dog groomer is staying open. She says the rules don't say essential business only. So maybe cleaners will be OK.
