To think schools should be shut during lockdown.

So shutting down everything but keeping schools open.AIBU to think that a lockdown should involve schools closing as well.Have been about six cases in my dds secondary zero social distancing and is just defeating the object of a lockdown as it has now been proven that schools, colleges etc can easily spread the virus.

Cases started to snow ball in our three settings between dc and myself before half term.
I feel primary dd is safer than the rest of us.
Secondary dd absolutely not.
Myself, a little safer.

Mokusspokus · 31/10/2020 22:59

Vivien, to give places time to prepare?

MrsHamlet · 31/10/2020 23:00

@Viviennemary

I think schools should stay open. I disagree with this new lock down. If things are so bad why wait till Wednesday.
I assume our great leader has plans he doesn't want to cancel on Wednesday evening
echt · 31/10/2020 23:01

It has to go to a Commons vote. Plus it gives everyone time to stock up on toilet paper.

LilyPond2 · 31/10/2020 23:04

I think secondary schools should be shut during lockdown (save for the exceptions which applied in the March lockdown). Already at DD's school they've had to collapse the "bubble" for one year group and tell another year group not to come in for a couple of days due to insufficient teaching staff being available (because so many teachers were either off sick themselves or required to self-isolate due to a family member having Covid/symptoms). That's in addition to lots of students being sent home to self-isolate for a fortnight due to contact with a positive case. If infection rates aren't brought down we'll end up with a situation where students are required to self-isolate multiple times which will be both disruptive to their education and very bad for their mental health.

VampireVicki · 31/10/2020 23:04

I don't think the lockdown will work if schools are still open.

Either Boris will shrug and say so what? Or they will have to legislate for a proper lockdown that includes schools plus all non essential business, more like the first one, at some future date.

And no, I am not a teacher.

amicissimma · 31/10/2020 23:08

I think it was a pity that the schools didn't reopen after the May half-term when Covid cases were declining and the weather was better. I think it would have been great if they'd been open all through July and perhaps some of August on the understanding that they would close mid- or late November for an extended Christmas holiday. Forward planning would have given more parents a chance to sort out childcare.

But I understand that the unions were against changing the working dates.

As children have now only had half a term's teaching and social contact with their peers since March, I think it is essential that schools stay open. Pre-adult years are an important and comparatively short period in which to learn and develop social and other skills. The period lost so far doesn't seem so great to adults, but is a long time in young lives.

Lockdown is not going to have the effect needed if schools stay open .

Based on what?

It’s working well in ROI.

callistography · 31/10/2020 23:14

Yes they should close.
Schools are not COVID secure
Teachers (esp CV) ones are at very high rush and are being told that they cannot wear PPE.
I'd very very happily go to 70% wages it if meant I wasn't in a room full of unmasked children. The children may not be as likely to get it but the adult teaching staff can.
Bubbles are bursting all over the place where I live and work and there have been lots of positive COVID cases. It's scary.
If you're fortunate enough to have your kids in a school /area where this hasn't happened yet, then that's great. But it IS happening and it's not good. People need to look past their own little bubble at what else is going on.

OhTheRoses · 31/10/2020 23:14

Completely agree with amicissima. Remind me why schools didn't open in May when cases were declining? Oh silly old me - it was the teaching unions.

MrsHamlet · 31/10/2020 23:15

I understand that the unions were against changing the working dates.
Teacher contracts from from Sept 1st - August 31st. If I'm working in school A in June, I've done my 195 days by the end of July. I can't be expected to work an additional 20 (or whatever) days in academic year 19-20 on the promise of getting it back in 20-21.
You're right about forward planning though. Not a strong point of this government.

@callistography I understand what you are saying but why should my children’s school close and them miss out on more education when there aren’t any cases or bubbles bursting? It might be selfish of me but I’m more concerned about my own children and their future

Yes, you are silly. Unions. Can't. Close. Schools.

wonderfullife123 · 31/10/2020 23:21

No!

echt · 31/10/2020 23:21

But I understand that the unions were against changing the working dates

I have no idea if this was the case, but why should teachers work thorough their holidays?

Viciouslybashed · 31/10/2020 23:22

No it wasn't. Show me anywhere where that shows that was the case other than dicks on the Internet spouting bullshit.
Viciouslybashed · 31/10/2020 23:22

Schools need to be made safer. Why is that not everyones priority.

GuyFawkesDay · 31/10/2020 23:24

Nope, schools didn't open to everyone because we weren't allowed to.

We were, however, open to keyworker and vulnerable students and teaching online so....yeah. definitely working.

Believe me, I'd much much rather schools stay open. I want my own children to continue to be educated at their schools and be with their friends.
I want to do my job that I absolutely love and teach my class in person.

However. I want to be safe. And as a CV teacher, I'm not. No teacher is. We are not being protected and it's disgusting.

The fact that the government set out specific advice that told us that we shouldn't wear masks is shocking. We are then in classrooms full of unmasked children.

It's just not acceptable.

GuyFawkesDay · 31/10/2020 23:25

I'll work through my holiday.

You need to pay me though. Thanks.

OhTheRoses · 31/10/2020 23:27

@MrsHamlet but they hadn't worked all their days because they were closed from Easter throughout May. And not all DC were receiving on-line learning but to have targetted that would have been tantamount to performance management.

@viciouslybashed - schools remained closed due to objections from the teaching unions and the government wrongly made a U turn - again.

GuyFawkesDay · 31/10/2020 23:29

I worked. And I was in school in my Easter holiday looking after key worker kids.

So no, you're wrong.
