NHS app notifications - how delayed are they?

When the NHS app sends the notifications saying possible exposure, and then another saying no need to do anything, I'm just interested in how long it takes them to find out that a possible contact is COVID positive? I guess that person will have had to develop symptoms and then get a test so it will be maybe a week delayed?

I had them both within 5 minutes - at midnight! I wasn't best pleased to be woken up by the first but relieved to get the second! I then got another straight away saying possible exposure so goodness knows!!

Dunno, but when I woke up this morning, I’d received two messages from the app. I could see them on my phone before I’d fully opened it up and entered my passcode, if you see what I mean.
But when I properly went into my phone, I now can’t see any alerts...
Where exactly do they appear - within the app or by text? I’ve gone into the app and can’t see anything...

Radleyhah · 28/10/2020 07:54

That was part of what was so annoying. Was exactly the same here!

tigerbear · 28/10/2020 07:58

Ah, I’ve just read the other thread on here, they’re ‘phantom’ messages!

cupofteaplease · 28/10/2020 08:03

The same happened to me last night. I received 3 notifications within seconds of each other, but when I opened the app, they were nowhere to be seen!

bigbluebus · 28/10/2020 08:10

@tigerbear. I had one of those messages last Friday. When I opened it up it disappeared. There was no message on the app so I ignored it - apart from the fact that I hadn't been near anyone for 10 days apart from the 3 people I was with at the time - none of whom got the message on their phones.

lockdownconfused · 28/10/2020 08:10

Same happened to me last night I had a possible exposure message and 5 mins later no need to do anything message. Could see them on my locked screen when I unlocked my phone they disappeared but then nothing in the app!

Aside from the well known issue with the bug (look through this topic to find all the other threads) when it's working properly is can't contact you until after someone has tested positive as I understand it. How would it work otherwise?

KylieSmilie · 28/10/2020 08:25

I had these phantom messages about two weeks ago.

SqidgeBum · 28/10/2020 08:31

I got 3 notifications last week which said 'someone you were near reported having covid 19'. I am 39 weeks pregnant and literally just see DH, PIL and my neighbour, and I knew none of them have the virus. I dont even go into shops now! When I clicked on the notifications, they disappeared and I couldnt find them anywhere in the app. When I googled it, it said they were glitches in the system and not actually real alerts to isolate.

Not really sure why I bothered to install the app tbh. It seems pretty unreliable.

Oh, I did know that it wasn't supposed to actually show you these messages, but I had heard that they were what the app is up to which are supposed to be invisible to the user - so I assumed they were genuine with regards to potential exposure to COVID. But maybe that's not the case.

My question was, assuming they were genuinely telling me I'd been near someone who had then tested positive, how long ago I had been near them. But maybe that is a redundant question if they do not actually mean that. How annoying.
