Covid in schools

Am in NW. Family of teachers throughout the area. Schools seemed safe when numbers were low....gradually got worse....in fact am now scared to death. Bubbles bursting every week.... management only tell you on a need to know basis if anyone has tested positive. Staff now getting it....children falling ill in class. Trying to social distance but you can’t and no masks yet you know Covid is in school. I hope it doesn’t get worse for everyone’s mental health.

@Lavendersy

I think we need to wait until that (lots of teachers ill with long Covid) starts to happen before jumping to conclusions.
Why do you want to see lots of teachers off with long Covid? Why can't we just follow WHO advice?
WhyNotMe40 · 28/10/2020 10:59

@Ecosse

Long COVID doesn’t exist *@WhyNotMe40*. Post viral syndrome does but is very rare and not unique to COVID.
Again with the rubbish Ecosse?

Ah @Ecosse doesn’t believe in masks in schools, doesn’t believe in LongCovid, doesn’t believe kids transmit, insists schools can & will stay open no matter what...
...unfortunately your beliefs are going to come up against the cold hard facts of Covid in winter. It is these kinds of beliefs that are going to drive school closures & another national lockdown as illness & death mounts.

Barbie222 · 28/10/2020 11:11

There's not many people onboard now @Ecosse . Have you thought about home Ed? Less teachers to bother you.

Barbie222 · 28/10/2020 11:24

biggest danger in terms of transmission in schools is staff rooms and teachers’ coffee breaks.

Looking at @noblegiraffe 's graph, there's clearly an awful lot of coffee drunk in the staff room by Year 12 and 13. Reminds me of being an a-level student and being thrilled to bump into the teachers in the pub.

No I don't, but I would like to see evidence of whether schoolchildren, Uni students, teachers or lecturers are likely to get seriously ill of hospitalised from COVID. If that's the case, then obviously we need think think about closing schools and Universities again.

We should also allow vulnerable teachers and pupils to stay at home without penalties.

I think it's naive to pretend that any work place or community setting can ever be COVID secure or free of covid. This virus may be with us for years and even a vaccine may not eliminate it.

And yes, I support face masks, test and trace, fresh air etc as well!

without closing schools, how about implementing more WHO recommendations, properly small bubbles, smaller class sizes as well?
Lavendersy · 28/10/2020 11:30

And I think a lot of cases in years 12 and 13 are indeed transmitted outside of school. Just like among Uni students.

Walkaround · 28/10/2020 11:31

@GirlCrush - imagine that in your retail environment you were told you had to fit 30 people into a classroom sized space in your shop for extended periods of time, none of them wearing masks because that would impede communication so was not supported as a measure by the powers that be, and were to ensure the room was ventilated if possible, but only if possible. Imagine that your store is not permitted by law to go into deficit to pay for extra safety measures.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/10/2020 11:31

I’ve had post viral syndrome twice. It was nothing like long Covid sounds like.

I was just weak and shaky, with no appetite. No problems breathing or anything else. I had one of the attacks for 3 months.

Lavendersy · 28/10/2020 11:32

Yes, of course if it's possible. I doubt our school can reduce class sizes due to lack of space but of course I fully support that.

WhyNotMe40 · 28/10/2020 11:33

But we know they are suppressing schools data.
Attendance figures are bollocks for example as the Covid X code does not count as an absence.
The graph that Noble posted was suppressed until the start of half term.
They are not releasing occupation risks relating to schools - probably as the one bit of data that was leaked seemed to be saying that teachers are 200% more likely to catch coronavirus than the general population. (It was unclear though).
I somehow doubt they will allow the collection and publication of numbers of staff with long Covid. You will only know when your kids get a never ending round of supply teachers.

WhyNotMe40 · 28/10/2020 11:36

Isn't it just the care though that the older you are, the less likely you are to be asymptomatic? So more likely to be tested... School students can only get tested if they have symptoms - and adult symptoms at that. The unis did mass testing and so numbers include asymptomatics.
