Someone been in house without a mask

We had a tradesperson visit today to quote for some work in our lounge. I asked my DH to ensure they came in the back as they would only then have to go in that one room and that I assumed they would have to wear a face mask.

DH instead let them in the front door, they have walked through our house 4 times in total and neither DH nor the tradesperson wore a mask or stood that far apart for the 15-20 minutes they were here.

I am absolutely fuming at him. AIBU? He seems to think I'm overreacting. We're in tier 1 but know of several people locally who have tested positive locally in the last few weeks and cases are definitely rising. I feel that I've taken loads of precautions when I've had to go somewhere (which is frankly just the supermarket or chemist) and he's done that inside our home.

Technically they should have worn a mask, but I feel you're over reacting.

starfish4 · 27/10/2020 12:25

Totally understand where you're coming from. We'd want both sides to wear a mask in our house if we couldn't SD. One thing, we know who won't be getting the job.

tootyfruitypickle · 27/10/2020 12:30

Had quite a few trade people over including during lockdown, they’ve never worn a mask, although one did ask if I wanted them to (I didn’t). Masks are for indoor areas where you can’t social distance. I kept my distance.

GabriellaMontez · 27/10/2020 13:00

Yabu.

Open the window for10 minutes. Chill.

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/10/2020 13:05

I’ve been asking tradespersons to wear a mask in our house and I’ve also worn one myself for their safety.

I would open all windows; air the house for 30 min and then try and not think about it again as it’s happened now.

BlanchflowerTulip · 27/10/2020 13:06

I think you're overreacting slightly. He should've worn a mask (or at least asked if you were ok with him not doing so) but the risk is pretty small.

hopeishere · 27/10/2020 13:14

I think you're over-reacting.

Threads like this really worry me.

0blio · 27/10/2020 13:21

I've had several tradesmen in my house during lockdown. One or two wore masks, others didn't and it never occurred to me to wear one but if they'd asked I would have.

I just kept my distance and wiped down door handles and anything they'd touched when they were finished.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 27/10/2020 13:24

I’d be cross as well. Although, unless it was an emergency, I’d not be having workmen inside anyway. We have had small quick outdoor jobs done where no need for them to be inside. Anything else we want can wait.

Sorry no advice but I’d be fuming too especially since I too have taken a lot of precautions. I would wipe any surfaces and areas that he was stood next too and open windows. I’m certain you will be fine, but considering the current situation and advice on mask wearing the tradesmen should’ve worn a mask.
SueEllenMishke · 27/10/2020 13:34

I think you're overreacting.

TicTacTwo · 27/10/2020 13:40

I had the police round during early lockdown and they didn't wear a mask which surprised me

I've not asked tradespeople to wear a mask but it's easy to socially distance in my house - eg the plumber worked in the downstairs loo which is by the front door which can be opened for ventilation plus my kids are old enough not to want to watch tradesmen work

byvirtue · 27/10/2020 13:41

Total over reaction. If you expected them to wear a mask then you should have explicitly stated it. I have had so many tradespeople over in the last 6 months (renovation) not a single one has worn a mask nor have I expected it.

Ponoka7 · 27/10/2020 13:41

There was no reason to not socially distance. The trafesperson is seeing lots of different people, going in houses etc, so there is a risk from him.

They were in each others company long enough to be infected. Unless posters on here know better than Jenny Harris, then I don't see why you shouldn't be miffed.

BackforGood · 27/10/2020 13:46

I think the tradesperson was a bit daft to move in and out of people's homes and not to wear a mask, but I do think you are over reacting.

megletthesecond · 27/10/2020 13:49

Yanbu.
I had electricians here yesterday and they wore masks. I also had the windows open for a few hours.

Crunched · 27/10/2020 13:49

The tradespeople who have visited me over this period have asked if I would like them to wear a mask and I have made the decision based on proximity to household members, length of their visit etc.
Did your DH tell your tradesman a mask wasn't necessary?
Like PP's I would open the windows and spray down any surfaces. Try not to worry.

Heyahun · 27/10/2020 14:01

do you think there's now a cloud of virus in your house?

I can't see the issue here - like everyone else said - give the surfaces a clean and open the window!

Piwlyfbicsly · 27/10/2020 14:08

What do teachers and support staff do without masks every day facings all those superspreaders lol
It's important to see some perspective.
Why didn't your husband say anything?
Also, could the works wait a bit, taken it's a pandemic and you feel very anxious about possible contact with the virus?

alwayswantchocolate · 27/10/2020 14:09

Thanks for the helpful replies. DH told them they didn't need to wear a mask! It is him I am disappointed in. Then DH didn't wear one either. I think the pair of them are bellends. But their consequences have the potential to impact on my and our DC.

"do you think there's now a cloud of virus in your house?" - research shows it stays in the air for 3 hours. So yes I do think that is possible.

I agree with those saying that you’re overreacting.

FatimaMunchy · 27/10/2020 14:12

Our cleaner doesn't wear a mask. She opens the windows because she gets hot while working. Haven't given it a thought to be honest.

Makegoodchoices · 27/10/2020 14:15

You’re over reacting a bit but as you say the real issue is your husband - I suspect he feels it’s not manly to show ‘weakness’ in front of another bloke by enforcing your boundaries.

My husband would do exactly the same - looking like one of the ‘cool’ kids and not ‘making a fuss’ are deeply engrained. Hmm

Piwlyfbicsly · 27/10/2020 14:17

OP, I remember labelling information on the pack of medical masks with a warning that they won't protect from a viral infection.

SqidgeBum · 27/10/2020 14:18

The chances of him having it is very low. The chances of you getting it is equally as low. The chances of dying of it is beyond minuscule. Yes, he should have worn the mask, but you are not about to drop.

The level of fear some people are experiencing in comparison to the risk of getting it or dying from it is very worrying, and makes me concerned about how people will adjust to living with this virus in a year or two time. Anciety levels and the number of people on medication just to cope is going to go through the roof. We have a risk of dying in a car because of a drunk driver or someone who falls asleep at the wheel when we drive, but we dont think about it every time we get in the car.
