Someone been in house without a mask

We had a tradesperson visit today to quote for some work in our lounge. I asked my DH to ensure they came in the back as they would only then have to go in that one room and that I assumed they would have to wear a face mask.

DH instead let them in the front door, they have walked through our house 4 times in total and neither DH nor the tradesperson wore a mask or stood that far apart for the 15-20 minutes they were here.

I am absolutely fuming at him. AIBU? He seems to think I'm overreacting. We're in tier 1 but know of several people locally who have tested positive locally in the last few weeks and cases are definitely rising. I feel that I've taken loads of precautions when I've had to go somewhere (which is frankly just the supermarket or chemist) and he's done that inside our home.

'do you think there's now a cloud of virus in your house?" - research shows it stays in the air for 3 hours. So yes I do think that is possible'

Yeah but research says lots of things so pick the bit o fir your narrative. Your husband and you have different understandings of risk. Next time, if it matters so much you go organise and supervise the worker the way you want.

You are massively over reacting. The virus will be around for years. Are you planning on living like this for that period of time? Maybe you should look at what teachers or an Ambulance driver has to deal with, everyday? Or move to Sweden?

averythinline · 27/10/2020 15:35

I don't think your overreacting...not sure why people are saying that ! the virus is spread by proximity and aerosol..

We are not letting anyone in the house but if we had to then they'd have to wear a mask...

I would get your dh to clean all the touch points and clean the floors too..
not sure airing the place will make much difference..
But probably would as well...

I certainly wouldn't be giving them the work

borntohula · 27/10/2020 15:39

'Fuming.' JFC.

solidaritea · 27/10/2020 15:39

@ApricotCrush

Those who say you're overreacting are the reason the numbers are going up.

We've had our boiler serviced this morning and although he did wear a mask it still made me nervous, as we're in the vulnerable age group.

No they're not. At least not in any significant way.

We were actively encouraged to sit in pubs and restaurants with dozens or hundreds of other people throughout August. We have schools and many offices and factories back to normal.

When I've been to restaurants, I've been far closer to staff and other patrons than I ever was with my plumber.

cologne4711 · 27/10/2020 16:24

@londongirl12

Technically they should have worn a mask, but I feel you're over reacting.
Should they? Is that a thing? I've had loads of tradespeople in my house since lockdown for one reason and another and only one has worn a mask.
Jakey056 · 27/10/2020 16:24

Oh god, reading the posts above has me despairing - where is rational appraisal???? The virus is not really passing on surfaces if it were we would all be dead because of gong to the supermarket. Secondly there are a distinct set of circumstances for infection to happen; your immunity, the virus shedding capacity of the visitor, the duration of time for contact, air temperature, air humidity etc etc . The list goes on. So no, I don't think you can get it from your plumber unless you were in very close proximity and we very unlucky and anyway even if you did the survival rate is very high. Read the stats. You were not even there when they called.

cologne4711 · 27/10/2020 16:24

(I am in tier one)

commandatori · 27/10/2020 16:40

You’re overreacting. Unless you are vulnerable.
Threads like these honestly baffles me. I can’t believe people are living with this kind of anxiety, and I’m in a room with 30 kids every day with basically no ventilation - not to mention how many people shop workers etc face. I would rather be in my position. It must be hard to not have to deal with much exposure as things like this then seem like a really big deal.

Reedwarbler · 27/10/2020 16:44

You are so over reacting. As another poster says, this virus will probably be around for ever now, you are going to have to learn to live with it. I have had tradespeople in the house and I tell them to remove their masks if they want. It must be very difficult doing heavy sweaty work with half your face enclosed. It's enough for me to keep my distance.

JamSarnie · 27/10/2020 16:49

The tradespeople I have had round were a mix of mask and non mask wearers. I don't care either way given that I was not wearing one.

If you were insistent on them wearing a mask then I suggest next time you let them in rather than your DH.

babyguffingtonstrikesagain · 27/10/2020 17:03

We've had builders here all day every day since the first week of July. I feel it would have been unreasonable to make them wear masks considering the physical exertion that's often required if them.

rainbowunicorn · 27/10/2020 17:04

You are overreacting and seem to be in a very unhealthy mindset. Are you planning to live with this high level of anxiety for several years, if not forever? Just open a window for a while and if you really want to then wipe down anything he was near.

I really would not give it a second thought. Someone being in your house for 20 mins is highly unlikely to have passed anything on to you. There is a higher chance of you being hit by a car in the supermarket carpark.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 27/10/2020 17:09

I don’t get the comparisons with rta’s. Given the numbers are way way lower than cases and deaths of the virus. It’s not comparable.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/10/2020 17:57

@SpunBodgeSquarepants

Whoops, I had a plumber in this morning and didnt cross my mind to ask him to wear a mask...!
Same here when we had the boiler serviced!
Coviddooneplease · 27/10/2020 17:59

Seriously? I’ve had multiple work men in my house this last month or so, none of them wore a mask, and we are all fine.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 27/10/2020 18:01

tradespeople are not obliged to wear a face covering - many do, but it is not a legal requirement

Lazypuppy · 27/10/2020 18:04

Major overreaction

Whatyoucanandcantdo · 27/10/2020 18:09

Massive over reaction. It's like there's nothing else on earth anyone can ever die from.

You're not vulnerable and yet not been anywhere bar supermarket or pharmacy since March I think you said?

Fuming? Christ alive Hmm

This is just not healthy

loulouljh · 27/10/2020 18:10

I wouldn't dream of asking someone to wear a mask in my house! It is insane. It would not enter my head. You will no doubt be just fine...

Pikachubaby · 27/10/2020 18:12

Are you very vulnerable health wise?

If not, why such a strong reaction? Have you always requested people to wear masks in your house?

Seems OTT, but some people are very stressed right now for various reasons, hope you’re ok Cake and Brew

PhilCornwall1 · 27/10/2020 18:14

Up to you to decide if you are overreacting.

We had one in over lockdown and told them they didn't have to bother if they didn't want to, we weren't going to wear one in our own house.

We had an electrician in twice a few weeks ago and again told him not to bother if he didn't want to. Same again next week, bathroom being done and they haven't on previous visits and don't have to next week, nobody else here will be.

If they want to wear one, they can fill their boots, but we don't expect it and we certainly won't be.

hopelesschildren · 27/10/2020 18:16

As someone said "What do teachers and support staff do without masks every day facings all those superspreaders lol".
I suppose no one should bother to wear mask then???
I would also be pissed off, despite the fact that I work in a department where most of us don't wear mask for all the time we are together, half of us have at one stage or other tested positive, and have been in contact with patients who are positive.

cardibach · 27/10/2020 18:19

not sure airing the place will make much difference..
@averythinline airing is very effective. Ventilation works. It’s why we’ve got so many school pupils moaning about cold in their classrooms - the windows are open all the time.

solidaritea · 27/10/2020 18:34

Well... Keeping the windows open is really just extrapolation from actual facts.

Fact is that covid seems to spread poorly outside. So someone decided that opening windows might be the next best bet, based on little evidence.

I mean, it makes sense, but it's not based on any actual studies or fully understood science.

JuliaJohnston · 28/10/2020 11:06

Fact is that covid seems to spread poorly outside.
In freshly circulating air, you mean? Why is it so dumb to imagine that would help inside as well?
