Was due to have my 13yo niece for 2 days next weekend as SIL and BIL are going away from the weekend. (I'm in tier 1)

She has just been sent home from school as her best friend in her class got a positive test this morning.

I have told SIL that because of this I won't be having her next weekend. Reason being my mum and dad are vunerable and we have kept our circle VERY small and hardly see anyone other than my parents.

I have just been told I'm selfish, hysterical and over reacting and that there is no reason whatsoever that I shouldn't have her.

Am I wrong?? She's been in VERY close contact with this girl (live in each others pockets as per SIL), and its only a week away. If it was 2 I would probably be a bit more comfortable.... WWYD?

I think you are right.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/10/2020 12:07

Your SIL is an arsehole and she's only thinking of herself. Of course you can't have her visit.

I'd be telling her to sod off.

KimMarie34 · 23/10/2020 12:08

I completely agree with you here.

frozendaisy · 23/10/2020 12:11

Your SIL knows you have kept your circle small, it's unreasonable for her to ask now.

I would cancel the visit. This is life right now we all have/will have to cancel things.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/10/2020 12:12

your siil is cross because her weekend is now not likely to happen. however, she is being unreasonable shouting at you. yanbu to refuse.

SengaMac · 23/10/2020 12:14

I hope your SIL apologises for her outburst when she's calmed down.

Of course you are right.

AriettyHomily · 23/10/2020 12:15

You are right.

eurochick · 23/10/2020 12:16

Surely she will be told to isolate anyway so the visit couldn't go ahead.

FrankenNora · 23/10/2020 12:16

When is the last time Niece had contact with her Friend?

Niece must self isolate for 14 days after that date according to guidelines.

Friend may not have been at School today?

Still don’t think you are wrong to cancel anyway though!

OverTheRainbow88 · 23/10/2020 12:16

I would also say no.

MrsWarleggan · 23/10/2020 12:22

Last contact was Wednesday but had symptoms all day. Didn't get test until Thursday 😕

sunnyday1976 · 23/10/2020 12:23

Surely if she's been sent home from school she has to self isolate for 14 days from her last contact with her friend. She shouldn't even be leaving her house?

MrsWarleggan · 23/10/2020 12:25

@sunnyday1976

Yep.......but I'm over reacting! 🙄

OP posts:
sunnyday1976 · 23/10/2020 12:28

If it's any consolation, you're really not!!
Makes you wonder where else she's going to let her go during her isolation Confused

ifonly4 · 23/10/2020 14:34

Regardless of you personally trying to reduce contact, SIL is the one being selfish as none of us know how it'll affect us until we have it - she's willing to pass the risk to you regardless of that. She's also ignorning the 14 days isolation because it suits her.

Sadly, it's something we'll all have to deal with at some point, self isolation and disappointment cancelling plans.

MayFayre · 23/10/2020 14:41

You are right and definitely not over-reacting.

LilyPond2 · 23/10/2020 14:46

As others have said, your niece should be self-isolating for 14 days from date of last contact with friend, so clearly she should not be coming to yours next weekend regardless of your personal circumstances.

MrsWarleggan · 23/10/2020 15:05

Thankyou all for your thoughts. I've stuck to my guns! 😊

lljkk · 23/10/2020 15:12

Why is OP the bearer of this bad news... sounds like SIL must be OP's husband's sister. He should be the communicator. Not OP.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/10/2020 15:12

It's shocking how cavalier your SIL is regarding other people's health. It shows you the kind of person she really is.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/10/2020 15:15

Your niece has to self isolate for 14 days. It's not negotiable.

MrsWarleggan · 23/10/2020 16:45

@lljkk

DH is going through some shit at the moment. Happy to take this one on the chin!!

OP posts:
satnighttakeaway · 23/10/2020 16:51

Has your SIL not understood that her DD is now in isolation for 14 days?

I would point that out and not engage any further, I don't know if children get fined for breaking isolation rules but if they do and she insists on being nasty I'd be tempted to report her

NoSquirrels · 23/10/2020 16:56

If her best friend got a positive test, then your niece needs to self-isolate, so OF COURSE you cannot have her to stay, whether you'd be happy to or not.

Cos of The Roolz.

Stick to your guns. Anyone making plans to do anything at the moment has to accept that Covid could derail them at a moment's notice.

I'm sorry for your SIL and BIL, but they'll have to suck this one up.

StarCat2020 · 23/10/2020 18:32

Mean people always try to guilt trip nice people into getting their own way.

This is exactly what your SIL has tried.
