France - is this where we’re heading?

I’m shocked at the figures over there for number of infections.

Anyone actually in France - what is it like over there now? We were on holiday there and at the time it felt worrying to read 3,000 daily infections were being recorded. UK caught up quickly though.

I wonder what it’s like in France now as that is likely to be us soon.

@Dustballs lower obesity rates in France, more vit D as more sun (other than in the north) etc.

Hence higher infection rates not leading to a similar level of death rates?

France and UK have similar size population, but France has 3x the area. Even in cities the population densities are lower.

I have family in France and anecdotally they are getting on with things pretty much as usual apart from not travelling outside Europe. FIL has had several surgeries in the last few months and never required to isolate in advance or take a covid test. House guests coming to stay from other regions in France and European countries, and vice versa. As said upthread, France are not legally able to restrict in home gatherings. I can see they are starting to worry now, it is no longer a "big city" issue that they can avoid, cases are popping up in the countryside too. The amount of people they have mixed with from many different places has worried me but they have stayed well so far. Nursing homes locked down earlier than here and have largely stayed very strict but we have elderly family members suffering depression etc. as I'm sure the elderly are all over the world.

@notimagain

I posted on a similar thread a few weeks ago about how things were in France, and was told that nobody was interested in my opinion as I don't pay tax in the UK. Hmm

Does that mean they have to take an interest in the opinions expressed by those who pay tax on both sides of the channel...Biscuit

Anyhow as we now know tonight's figures for France are pretty darned close to last nights Sad.

Having seen how "it's done" both sides of the channel I'm not sure why we are seeing such a difference, other than the annual migration to southern France in July/August, and the slightly earlier return of students the facs etc might have given France an unwanted headstart in the autumn numbers game....

Not sure what your biscuit is for?

Nobody has to take an interest in anything, but it is a bit rich (tea?) to post on a thread about how things are in another country and then tell posters that their experience isn't relevant as they are not UK taxpayers.

@notevenat20

Yes @ noteven, they government changed it when they discovered that only 20 percent were adhering to it because it was to long.

That is so interesting. I do wish we would copy this and the schools’ policy from France. It is just not workable to send an entire year of primary school children home for 14 days for one infected person in the school .

totally agree with this

I guess I worded my post badly...The statement/comment along the lines that if you pay no tax in UK, you have no say in UK affairs originated with another poster....my post was a comment on that POV..

I know I should have expanded on the rich tea (aka no comment in this place):l suspect the originator of that comment didn't realise that many living overseas actually do pay tax to UK HMRC.......

Now back to preparing for confinement 2..

The "not entitled to an opinion because you don't pay tax in X or Y was i

@notimagain

Thank you for clarifying.

The latest figures are truly alarming. I agree that confinement is very much a "when" not "if" now.

52,000 new cases in France today! What the hell?! Confused Sad

52,000 new cases in France today! What the hell?!

Yes, a bit of a Shock though I think many here are pondering the reasons for step change upwards, almost overnight, in the figures from around 20,000 per day to around 40k a day we saw back end of last week Confused.

Only relatively encouraging news I can pull out of it all this the mortality numbers aren't racing upwards (last night's figure was 116 in 24 hours, still tragic..)
