Just highlights how it can effect even the younger population

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/10/2020 21:09

We know it can affect the younger population. It is statistically rare though, which is why those cases make news stories and the 80 year olds dying don't.

Chickenandrice · 22/10/2020 21:35

Obviously not that rare though. And even for someone who should have access to early medical care.

wowfudge · 22/10/2020 21:36

Why would an ex PM have access to early care and if something is statistically rare, then it's rare!

PowerslidePanda · 22/10/2020 21:50

Amongst the critically ill COVID patients admitted to ICU since 1st September, 23% are/were under the age of 50. I wouldn't call that rare.

Source for that, please? And how is 'critically ill' defined?
Chickenandrice · 22/10/2020 21:55

I didn’t expect this to be such a contentious subject

Would also like to see the figures, but if you need an ICU bed chances are you are more than a bit peaky @CatteStreet

...Money usually. ExPMs don't tend to be on the breadline.
Porcupineinwaiting · 22/10/2020 22:02

The definition of "critically ill" is being so ill that you are in danger of dying. That's where the "critical" bit comes from.

CountessFrog · 22/10/2020 22:05

I would also like to see the source for this. 100% of patients in DH’s ITU with covid are 70+

CoffeeandCroissant · 22/10/2020 22:06

"Would also like to see the figures"

UK ICU figures are in the ICNARC reports. Don't know anything about Belgium though.

Hope she gets better. There are a lot of naysayers on mumsnet. If you say Covid is serious they immediately demand stats. It's not called a worldwide pandemic for nothing.

ForBlueSkies · 22/10/2020 22:52

23% is correct. This is why only giving the vaccine to over 75 year olds is bonkers. Yes, give it to them first, but it’s clear that anyone over 40 is at risk of ending up in the ICU. Most will survive, but with what long term damage?

Sb2012 · 22/10/2020 23:23

What? 23% under 50 in icu?
That’s not what the government are leading us to believe.
Is it true then?
I know we have or had a couple of 40s or under in icu recently at a hospital in my area. It was a statement from an icu doc in the local paper, but I didn’t realise it was nationwide?
If it’s true then why isn’t this made obvious to us? First the shocking secondary school cases figures that were not revealed until today and now this?? I feel like it’s all lies and we will never know the true nature of this virus.

Greyhair59 · 22/10/2020 23:41

Average age of those who die in the uk is 82. Enough of the ridiculous panic!!!!

Death is not the only possible outcome that we should be concerned about.
Lucked · 22/10/2020 23:56

I think the 23% since September is because we have gone through a period where a younger population has been infected combined with overall low covid ITU numbers. Now that it is spreading across all age groups and ITUs are filling up I expect that percentage will fall.

CoffeeandCroissant · 23/10/2020 00:07

The average age of ICU patients admitted from 01 September is slightly higher than the average age of patients up to 31 August.

For admissions from 01 September, 44.6% are people under 60 years of age.

If you read the report you’ll see that mean (59.7) and median (62) age is actually higher since September 1. By about 2 years.

It’s a popular misconception that younger people don’t end up in ICU. Many in their 40s and 50s do, in fact. They just have a good chance of survival.

xtinak · 23/10/2020 00:16

Perhaps it's worth pointing out that not everyone who dies of covid will pass through an ICU. Younger people may be better candidates for treatment.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/10/2020 00:17

Yep - 99,9% chance of survival

So, pretty good odds

Emmie12345 · 23/10/2020 00:18

But what percentage of these younger icu patients have underlying conditions such as obesity and diabetes ? A lot I am sure

She is actually the current foreign minister, so not an ex prime minister in the sense that she has retired from politics. Apparently, she caught it from a relative rather than in a work setting.
