S Yorks Tier 3 Move has done me in

BikeRunSki · 21/10/2020 13:17

I live in W Yorks (Tier 2) but only about half a mile from the border with S Yorks. Since March, I have dealt with the stress of lockdown, homeschooling, wfh, not seeing my mum etc (and I have found it very stressful and hated it all) by running, walking, swimming and cycling outdoors, especially swimming. It is very hard to avoid S Yorks, without getting urban, which is not really what I find relaxing.

From Saturday, it will be OK for me to travel 20 miles to go shopping in Leeds, but it won’t advisable to travel 6 or 7 miles to swim* in a river in the countryside of S Yorks Pennines. Proper fed up now.

  • I know it’s getting colder, that doesn’t bother me.

That's tough!

Would any of these make for a suitable temporary alternative?

(PS: love it that there appears to be a place called 'Swim Feral' - really does sound like the sort of place to cast out all your demons!)

cathyandclare · 21/10/2020 13:39

I think this lovely place is in West Yorkshire, if that's any use.

Leeds will be tier 3 as well so it is all a bit moot.

AuntieStella · 21/10/2020 14:16

I didn't think further restrictions had gone beyond S Yorks so far?

Even if it's only a week or two behind, it gives BikeRunSki a few more days of utterly batcrap winter open water swimming. Every little helps!

Also, if she is within the Leeds tier/area, she can still travel to and use outdoors recreation places in that same area.

Or you could try hard bike ride followed by ice bath??

vickibee · 21/10/2020 14:20

We are in Penistone which is about 5 miles inside the SY border, cases are lowish here, my sons 2ndry school has remained mostly open with only two cases. . You must be quite close to us really.
I am confused by what I am allowed to do, so my elderly Mum lives alone - Am i Allowed to see her becuase she is a bubble ?

Aposterhasnoname · 21/10/2020 14:22

Inadvisable isn’t the same as banned. I very much doubt anyone else is batshit crazy wild swimming in October, so I’d make my own risk assessment and crack on.

AuntieStella · 21/10/2020 14:27

It's not the swimming that the problem in itself - it's that you should only travel into tier 3 from lower tier areas for work, education or if you have caring responsibilities. Not for leisure. And the number of journeys should be minimised.

Yes it's advice (at present) but that doesn't make it OK to ignore it.

Pushmepullyou · 21/10/2020 14:34

I’m in Penistone too. Are you a member of KAPOWS? There’s a lot of chat about wild swimming locations on there today.

HoneyBee03 · 21/10/2020 14:43

I'm sure it would be fine being so local, especially as it's for exercise. Do you have any option to do a few days at work or is it not possible? Just wondered if that could give you a break from being stuck at home.

PaperMonster · 21/10/2020 17:11

I’m in a Tier 3 but live on the border with a Tier 1 and do our shopping and walking in that area as it’s closer than any Tier 3 towns. And, whilst we are Tier 3, we have hardly any cases.

PasstheBucket89 · 21/10/2020 17:26

im in South Yorkshire its shit, maybe necessary but shit, lots of poverty here already.

Sockwomble · 21/10/2020 18:31

If what you are going to do doesn't involve being around other people then I don't think it is an issue.

user1471453601 · 21/10/2020 18:43

@AuntiStella, that to me is the problem. It's advise. Only travel if necessary. So each individual defines their own " necessary". You can't get people to follow concepts like " necessary" or "stay alert" because we all define concepts according to our own specific paradigm.

IF the government don't want us to travel, they should say so. If they want us to "stay alert" they should precisely say what that means.

Perhaps, for the op, the swim is what keeps her mental health ok. For me, travelling into a tier three from a tier two is a big no no.

Rules should be specific and not open to interpretation

WillBillHal · 21/10/2020 18:49

It's a nightmare isn't it ☹️(it's your HD8 neighbour by the way on a different name) Hope you can get swimming somewhere.

cathyandclare · 21/10/2020 18:49

I totally agree with this
jimmyhill · 21/10/2020 19:36

It's just advice. Do what you like.

Christmasfairy2020 · 21/10/2020 19:38

I live in s.yorks. swimming is on, lessons and normal. Horse riding is on. I can meet my mum in the park it says. Dont stress it

Thanksitsgotpockets · 21/10/2020 21:34

It's not advisable but not illegal. I would enjoy your swim. As you say, you've risk assessed and the chances of catching it spreading covid are negligible.
It was horrific not being able to do the things that keep me right, back in march etc. Including wild swimming.

BikeRunSki · 22/10/2020 06:26

@Pushmepullyou, I am. I was on the thread I think you’re referring to.

Because of the time of year, DH back at work, childcare etc swimming opportunities are much diminished. So I will try and swim once or twice a week, at antisocial times and in remote locations whiskers it’s not actually law not to travel.

Then I can go and lick the floor in the White Russ Shopping Centre, and hang out in pubs in Leeds and Bradford, because that’s all in W Yorks, and I’m “allowed” to do that.HmmWink

I know how you feel, I’m the other way round. I’m from West Yorkshire, my youngest goes to school in West Yorkshire, do all my food shopping there. We’re less than half a mile from the West Yorkshire border. The only thing I do in South Yorkshire is run!

BikeRunSki · 22/10/2020 07:00

@Pushmepullyou - We’re the same way. I’m in W Yorks, but mostly run/swim/walk/cycle in S Yorks. And shop at Penistone Tesco!

The key is "not advisable". If what you are doing is going to remote locations to wild swim, rather than pop into Meadowhall for a spot of shopping I'm not sure what the problem is. Just be thankful you are in West Yorkshire and have a whole host of other places you can legitimately go as well.
