Hi,
I just want to add my experience for info and to remind people to be careful.
I am not yet 40, healthy weight with no real health problems. I am now in my 3rd week of Covid.
The first week was all flu like. Awful headache, pains in limbs, sore, hoarse throat. No smell and taste funny. The cough started after a few days.

The second week became hell, temperature spiking, lying in puddles of sweat, all other symptoms too. Phoned doctor and given an antibiotic incase I developed a secondary bacterial infection.
I lay in bed hoping to get over it, as the doctor said, I'm young and healthy.
My husband, after another week made me phone the doctor who told me to go to a and e.
My immune system had crashed and I have pneumonia. I'm home on steroids and antibiotics but have been told that it will be a long recovery.
Please take it seriously. I should have had a mild case if rumour were to be believed.

OP posts:

I'm so sorry, Sorehandsandfeet. I know it is a horrible illness. I'm sure you will recover and hope it doesn't take too long.

Baffling responses on here, why have people's compassion utterly deserted them now of all times?

OP I'm so sorry you have been feeling so rotten, I hope you make a full and swift recovery. Flowers

Lovely1a2b3c · 20/10/2020 22:46

Oh no! Get well soon OP! That must have been really scary.

I'm dreading my household catching it as we're all vulnerable with one or more medical conditions.

Covid-19 is a horrible disease despite what conspiracy theorists might say and Long-Covid can be crippling even for people who don't get pneumonia. I think that the kind of people who say that it is one in a million are the same type of people who will only understand how terrible it can be if it happens to them.

Oly4 · 20/10/2020 22:47

Sorry you’ve been so unwell, a 40yo friend of mine had a similar experience.

And just for the record, this statement is utter bollocks:
“The pandemic only ends with a large % of the population being infected, with or without vaccine (and a lot already have). You're not going to avoid it.”

BillywilliamV · 20/10/2020 22:52

This is not the typical experience of a 40 yr old healthy person, the OP is an outlier, we cannot behave as if most people are going to be seriously ill from this, because they are not. There are far too many people far more scared than they should be and this is putting our whole civilisation at risk.
DH, DD and I all have Covid at the moment, mild flu symptoms. Other DD totally asymptomatic!

musicaljojo · 20/10/2020 22:54

Goodness, I hope you take it easy and rest to make a full recovery, sounds like an awful experience but I hope you get well soon!

Madhairday · 20/10/2020 22:59

@CovidNightmare

Wishing you well and a speedy recovery op. 💐

From someone whose mum is currently alone in hospital with a covid positive result, we can't visit and we can't even talk to her, and she can't hear the nurses, as her hearing aid is broken. But nevermind, some of the posters on here will just say she is one of the old, expendable ones 😢

I'm so sorry to hear that, @CovidNightmare, and sadly I've seen too many of the posts you refer to. I hope your mum makes a full recovery. It must be so horrible for you not being able to see her or speak to her Flowers

Op I hope you're feeling better soon. Ignore the covid minimisers on here who let their agendas suck out any compassion they might have. It's good that people like you share your experience in order to help people think about how they act and take care in these times. As someone ECV I'm getting increasingly worried again but just doing what I can to keep safe. Pneumonia sucks, I have it a lot and it's hard to get over. Take care Flowers

MadameBlobby · 20/10/2020 23:01

Hope you get well soon xx

goldfinchfan · 20/10/2020 23:02

A lot of scared people on here trying to justify the OP's illness......it is Covid and a lot of people might catch it.

Poeple tellling themselves it's only one in a million who are ill to validate not following the rules.
If you do catch it it will hurt.......or keep you under par for a long time

I hope you recover soonest OP

everythingisginandroses · 20/10/2020 23:02

I've always wanted to put our whole civilisation at risk. Who knew I could do so just by staying at home quietly? Confused

Inkpaperstars · 20/10/2020 23:13

OP would be technically classed as a mild case going by the original WHO categories, she is not an outlier. When people like Whitty say that the majority have mild cases, they include the OP. Mild cases are any cases that do not require full hospitalisation, including cases where people have pneumonia but are not admitted to hospital. I think, iirc, moderate cases are those requiring hospitalisation and severe cases are those requiring ICU.
Ugzbugz · 20/10/2020 23:14

Apparently the second wave of the spanish flu affected younger people worse but I was told I was scaremongering before Hmm

Unless it's due to a lot of the working age and parents being subjected to the virus now.

Bagadverts · 20/10/2020 23:27

@borntohula

I hope you get well soon but I also don't understand why you felt the need to scare people? I mean, it's pretty likely that most of us will, at some point, catch it. We can't really control how 'lucky' we'll be when we do. I just want to know what your motive is here, I suppose.
I don’t think that OP is trying to scare. It is also in the Coronavirus section so if people want to avoid topic altogether they can. She isn’t saying don’t carry on with life. The main thing I took from OP was that if you do get Covid and symptoms are getting worse than you can manage at home seek help, even if you are fit and healthy. That is not scare mongering. When people get ill they can lose perspective or don’t want to bother hospital because they feel there are more seriously ill people. This post might just prompt me to get help if I do get Covid in the future.

Thank you for posting op get well soon. Flowers

MJMG2015 · 20/10/2020 23:53

Thank you for posting, sorry about the idiots, but if it makes just a couple of people think twice about taking risks, it's worth it.

It must have been very scary for you! I hope you make a full review & it doesn't take too long 🌷

Harehedge · 21/10/2020 00:08

Yes, she's nearly died and obviously is now on a mission to ruin your evening.

Could it possibly be that she is encouraging people to take precautions so they minimise their chances of catching it. Just a crazy, crazy thought.

As for motives, check your own!

Harehedge · 21/10/2020 00:10

starfro

And you're a scientist?

And I'm not?

How you know these things is the really astounding part...

Patrick has acknowledged mistakes. I don't know he'd go so far as to say he's talked bollocks. But yes, scientists can certainly make mistakes or simply not have a crystal ball.

WingingItSince1973 · 21/10/2020 00:31

Oh am so so sorry. Sounds absolutely horrendous. Thank you for sharing the realities that can happen to anyone with this illness. I wish people would take it more seriously and stop banging on about their freedom etc etc. Yes many will have it mild but its a lottery we do not know how we will be until we have it. Im not living in fear before anyone says that, I'm realistic and taking the necessary precautions. Really hope you start feeling better very soon. I've had flu that felt like I was dying, you must have felt awful. Gentle hugs to you xxx

GnomeDePlume · 21/10/2020 06:03

@Sorehandsandfeet Flowers best wishes for a speedy recovery

@Inkpaperstars exactly!

According to WHO:

80% will be asymptomatic or have 'mild' symptoms
15% will require oxygen
5% will require mechanical ventilation

So, yes, according to WHO the OP's symptoms were mild.

As OP has described even mild symptoms are not a walk in the park.

Jrobhatch29 · 21/10/2020 07:50

It is scaremongering to compare to the spanish flu.

The data doesn't suggest young people are being hospitalised in large numbers.

That breakdown ^^ by WHO was based on confirmed cases in China. The average hospitalisation rate is now thought to be between 2 and 3% when all cases are factored in, not just confirmed cases. This varies hugely by age.

borntohula · 21/10/2020 07:52

Ah whatever, @Harehedge. Very little time for people like you.

mumwon · 21/10/2020 08:10

This morning a professor was interviewed about the number of people who had Long Covid
The number she stated was as high as
ONE IN TWENTY

Why should someone not talk about the reality of their experience to avoid scaring people? It's more honest than the gaslighting bullshit that's being spun to keep us all relying on grandparents for childcare and to make teachers who would be self-isolating in any other scenario stay in school.
Aragog · 21/10/2020 09:01

I'm sorry to hear you've been so poorly. Please take care and get lots of rest.

I developed pneumonia several years back and it takes some recovering from - the key is to not try and rush it, give your body time to recover gradually. You'll get there, but it takes time.

Take care

MadameBlobby · 21/10/2020 09:11

@Ugzbugz

I don’t think it’s so much scaremongering as not relevant as this is not the flu.
TheoneandObi · 21/10/2020 10:11

God OP you're not pushing any agenda! The very thought that some posters' comments make you have to defend yourself is shocking! It's good to read real accounts like yours. I must say the longer this goes on the less I want Covid. I speak as a super fit 54 year old.
I wish you and your family well.
