Hi,
I just want to add my experience for info and to remind people to be careful.
I am not yet 40, healthy weight with no real health problems. I am now in my 3rd week of Covid.
The first week was all flu like. Awful headache, pains in limbs, sore, hoarse throat. No smell and taste funny. The cough started after a few days.

The second week became hell, temperature spiking, lying in puddles of sweat, all other symptoms too. Phoned doctor and given an antibiotic incase I developed a secondary bacterial infection.
I lay in bed hoping to get over it, as the doctor said, I'm young and healthy.
My husband, after another week made me phone the doctor who told me to go to a and e.
My immune system had crashed and I have pneumonia. I'm home on steroids and antibiotics but have been told that it will be a long recovery.
Please take it seriously. I should have had a mild case if rumour were to be believed.

Wishing you well in your recovery OP. I am terrified going in to work in school every day as an older overweight asthmatic (yes I know Mumsnet do-gooders will tell me to lose the weight. I'm working on it).

Children (and the adults) don't socially distance. I've recently picked up a cold from dd3 who is in a large 6th form bubble - shows just how a virus can spread.

The deny it all brigade really do my head in - one on my local FB page. No idea. The stuff they link to makes Trump look sane!

MrsMayo · 20/10/2020 21:55

Get well soon. It is frightening how differently people are ill Your post proves that some young people are really poorly.

My Dad at 67 had it and was really poorly but not hospilatised (nearly though on several occasions). I know someone who was on oxygen at 65. Middle aged people just having it mildly and someone on their 30s who were quite ill.

FreshFreesias · 20/10/2020 21:57

@MasksGlovesSoapScrubsplease don’t minimise the potential side effects of tooth extraction. I had 2 teeth out 3 weeks ago and still feeling very exhausted with side effects.

There is risk attached to everything but we can’t live our lives in cotton wool however.
That’s why I am not in favour of locking down the whole country, destroying jobs and mental health due statistically very few people becoming ill.

Poppingnostopping · 20/10/2020 21:59

How awful for you OP and very frightening, I really wish you all the best with your recovery.

I think the scariest thing about corona is precisely its unpredictability, it really can be anything from asymptomatic, to mild few days, to quite severe but not in hospital to full on hospitalization and of course for a few they die of it. It does feel like a lottery, probably one mostly stacked in our favour if we are youngish and reasonably healthy, but a lottery none the less.

A lot of life especially health is a lottery, but this is a really stark example, which is why people end up arguing about lockdown/carrying on, precisely because it depends at which end of the experiences you focus.

I wish you well with your recovery, and think it's very interesting to hear your experience. I think whatever your view on what preventive measures you need, you should be prepared to listen to all of them.

Inkpaperstars · 20/10/2020 22:01

Actually @user1471518104, OP is far from being one in a million who is not ok.

She is actually one of the majority that have mild cases. I know it isn't 'mild' OP, not playing down yoru suffering but pointing out to the unaware that pneumonia that doesn't require you to be hospitalised (as in fullŷ admitted) is in fact technically classed as a mild case. When they talk about the majority having mild cases, they are including cases like the OP's.

I really hope you start to feel a lot better soon OP Flowers and thank you for sharing your experience.

justasking111 · 20/10/2020 22:01

OH had flu last year seemed to be getting over it then suddenly went down hill. It was pleurisy he has never been this ill. Complications can be very nasty and frightening. I am glad you are back home OP take care of yourself and rest.

starfro · 20/10/2020 22:04

@Harehedge

The pandemic only ends with a large % of the population being infected, with or without vaccine (and a lot already have). You're not going to avoid it.

That is simply not true. I can't begin to unpick the faulty science here. The pandemic doesn't 'end' necessarily at all without a vaccine. Stop peddling ridiculous nonsense.

I guess Patrick Vallance is talking bollocks then.

The unscientific mumbo-jumbo on here from non-scientists is astounding.

Purpledaisychain · 20/10/2020 22:08

Wishing you a quick recovery, OP. Sorry that some people have been so horrible on here.

everythingisginandroses · 20/10/2020 22:12

Everyone is a scientist on the internet Hmm The minimising brigade are inadvertently showing their own fear, it is not a good look. As @Inkpaperstars observes, even 'mild' or 'moderate' cases can be pretty damn unpleasant. Once again, wishing you well OP.

Jellybean27 · 20/10/2020 22:14

Get well fast!

SaltyAndFresh · 20/10/2020 22:17

Sorry you've had such a rough time OP. Hope your recovery continues.

I do take it seriously but work in a big school with several cases. All I can do is refuse to rely on GPs for childcare and wait to see how I get on when I catch it myself.

Pollypockett23 · 20/10/2020 22:17

Sorry to hear that Op.

How are you feeling now? We also had it but managed to make a speedy recovery.

dollychopss · 20/10/2020 22:19

@Sorehandsandfeet

Thank you everyone for all the well wishes. As for the others, well I can only give my own experience and it has not been a pleasant one, that is just my truth not an opinion. For those asking, my husband contracted it from a workmate and brought it home. He was in bed Ill for around a week but is mostly well now. My 10 year old tested positive too and had a headache and sore tummy. My 4 year old had a cough. I am totally grateful they seem well now.

I have no clinical known risk factors for severe disease. Hence why I wanted to put it out there. Just to let people know not to be complacent. I should have went to hospital sooner but kept expecting to improve due to age and health. If it helps anyone to seek help sooner then it has been a good thing.

Also, nurses told me that many of the other patients in the ward were young. They said it was a different demographic to march and April.

Just for info. I'm not pushing an agenda. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Hope you feel better op

I know of people that have died with it , one died from suicide , around 20 people had it at work .... everything is shit whether affected with covid or from covid

Rest up get better .

Ps what did the nurses mean ? Sorry if being dumb x glad you kids are ok

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 20/10/2020 22:19

Sorry to hear you have had it so bad, my healthy 18 year old ds caught Covid end of March, he was very sick in bed for 13 days but fortunately he got better at home.

My adult dd had a Covid antibody test last week as she works as a care assistant, that was positive, she has no idea when she had Covid and she was worried about it as she is asthmatic and has struggled with keeping it under control this year.

crankysaurus · 20/10/2020 22:21

Get well soon, OP Flowers

borntohula · 20/10/2020 22:22

I hope you get well soon but I also don't understand why you felt the need to scare people? I mean, it's pretty likely that most of us will, at some point, catch it. We can't really control how 'lucky' we'll be when we do. I just want to know what your motive is here, I suppose.

CovidNightmare · 20/10/2020 22:24

Wishing you well and a speedy recovery op. 💐

From someone whose mum is currently alone in hospital with a covid positive result, we can't visit and we can't even talk to her, and she can't hear the nurses, as her hearing aid is broken. But nevermind, some of the posters on here will just say she is one of the old, expendable ones 😢

BitOfFun · 20/10/2020 22:25

The 'motive' is to warn people not to be complacent just because they're not in a supposedly high risk group. Seemed pretty obvious to me.

KittCat · 20/10/2020 22:26

Wishing you all the best op 💐

Again though, most of us have come to terms with the idea of catching it. In fact, my first reaction to posts like this is to hope I catch it sooner rather than later. I work in hospitality, so it's not out of the realms of possibility. We can't all hide away from it forever!
Staffy1 · 20/10/2020 22:30

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Flowers

There are always aggressive and dismissive posts when it comes to Covid which I think stem from fear. Easier to deny it can be serious for anyone and is a lot worse than flu than face up to that fact.

borntohula · 20/10/2020 22:31

I'm sorry about your mum, I can relate although it's cancer that's destroying my DM. However, I'm willing to bet you have never encountered anyone here calling another person 'old and expendable.'
Mumisnotmyonlyname · 20/10/2020 22:32

Thank you for your account OP. Get well soon.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 20/10/2020 22:33

@TheHouseonHauntedHill

Op awful.

I wonder if a pneumonia vaccine is worth having.

Unfortunately, not really. The pneumonia vaccine is for a particular bacterium that causes one kind of pneumonia. Pneumonia has many different causes.

Hope you’re feeling better for being home OP. Flowers

Staffy1 · 20/10/2020 22:34

@CovidNightmare, oh, your poor mum and you, it must be so worrying. I hope she's better soon Flowers
