Why isn't there outrage over dropping from 60 million to 22?

Gobacktothe90s · 20/10/2020 18:21

Can't believe the govt are getting away from offering 60 million and then dropping to 22 million in order to make a example of Burnham and Manchester.
There should be outrage that if the govt felt they could offer 60 million then they should give it.
The fact Manchester is being offered less than other places is a disgrace

Are they being offered less? Or is it that because the locals council has refused to manage it, central govt has to do the work instead?

Rosehip10 · 20/10/2020 18:27

The money will go to individual council areas in greater Manchester. Be interesting to see how much say Trafford gets (Graham Brady!) Vs oldham........

HunkyPunk · 20/10/2020 18:29

I thought the 22 million was separate to the 60 million which is still on the table? That's what I understood, anyway.

MaxNormal · 20/10/2020 18:32

Or is it that because the locals council has refused to manage it, central govt has to do the work instead?

Can I ask what gave you that impression?
It's true that the covid response has been way too centralised but that is down to government preferring to send money in the direction of private companies owned by their chums rather than wasting on it mere local authorities for the good of the actual tax payer.

Chailatteplease · 20/10/2020 19:38

I’m wondering the exact same thing OP. I’m outraged but no one else seems to be.

StatisticalSense · 20/10/2020 19:47

The £60,000,000 was the entire package of measures whereas the £22,000,000 is for a singular measure with other measures being provided by central government out of central funds so the two values aren't comparable.

Dee1975 · 20/10/2020 22:30

I don’t know specifics, but they said it was still on the table. So that’s probably why there’s no outrage. They can get it if they want it I guess?
It seemed silly that the government wouldn’t give the 65mil they wanted. But I assume that’s because that would make it disproportionate to what other T3 areas were getting. Which, assuming that’s correct, it would be wrong to give Manchester more than the other areas. So maybe that’s why they didn’t stump up the extra 5mil.

DamitJanet · 20/10/2020 22:35

It doesn’t relate to the same thing, there’s more to come, distributed differently, than the £20m

amusedtodeath1 · 20/10/2020 22:42

It's 82 Million in total that's on offer Boris and Burnham agreed that 22 Million for test and trace is good so that's agreed. The other 60 Million is still available but Andy Burnham is refusing to accept this because he thinks they should give Greater Manchester another 5 Million on top of that. Which would work out at more money per person than has been given to other tier 3 counties.

I have no idea who is right or wrong but that's the situation. Greater Manchester will get at least another 60 Million once the boys have stopped squabbling.

Varjakpaw · 20/10/2020 22:43

There is outrage everywhere I get my news from.

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 20/10/2020 22:50

The Govt have clarified the £60 million is still on the table:

MsMarvellous · 20/10/2020 22:51

£60m is still on the table. £22m is the minimum to support contact tracing. The government haven't taken it away Burnhan refused it. Not that I'm like Boris or his government, or indeed how this has been handled.

PetitFours · 20/10/2020 22:52

I might have missed something but there is outrage isn't there?

IvorHughJarrs · 20/10/2020 22:57

I will be outraged if Manchester gets more than the rest of us in Tier 3.
I also think Andy Burnham is playing a dangerous game, local medics told him they needed more stringent measures over a week ago yet he has continued his political posturing for another 10 days while the figures kept climbing

Ineverdidmind · 20/10/2020 23:04

I'm in Manchester and I can tell you there is huge amounts of outrage.

Allywill · 20/10/2020 23:04

This is basically how they blackmailed lancs. Take deal now or we will impose tier 3 and you will get no extra. Not sure why GM thinks they should be treated differently. Having said that I do admire AB for standing up to them and wish we had someone in our corner in lancs. It’s such a farce. Nottingham is at a higher level of cases than Manchester isn’t it? Yet it’s still tier 2. There appears to be no logic behind any of it. Which yes makes it difficult to take seriously and I speak as generally the most law abiding, authority fearing person ever. ( I once refused to park in the drop off zone for a pharmacy as technically I was picking up, not dropping off ....)

Ineverdidmind · 20/10/2020 23:08

@IvorHughJarrs Burnham is asking more and making it clear other areas also should get more. Dont fall for divide and rule, he's doing a good thing here.
Manchester has been in Tier 2 for weeks, people are already desperate. The South has not had it the same.
And since Tier 2 for weeks clearly hasn't achieved much, going to Tier 3 could last months. People will die through poverty before covid at this rate.

Ineverdidmind · 20/10/2020 23:10

He's not saying Manchester should get special treatment, that's just Tory spin.
If he had won his case he'd have done you all a favour, you'd have grounds to argue too. Why do you think the Tories are making such an example of him.
Don't fall for it.

veeboo · 20/10/2020 23:12

Because it isn't London

Allywill · 20/10/2020 23:12

But how can you argue once deal is done? Surely you have agreed terms? I can’t see them giving us in lancs or Liverpool any more.

ceeveebee · 20/10/2020 23:13

Manchester has been under tier 2 style restrictions for almost 3 months already so IMO should get more than those who have only just been put under restrictions
And there is plenty of outrage in greater Manchester about this.

JamieLeeCurtains · 20/10/2020 23:13

There IS outrage.

It's everywhere on the nedia.

Newsnight now, e.g.

baroqueandblue · 20/10/2020 23:15

Well said, @Ineverdidmind

Excellent points, and true, unlike some of the deluded misinformed nonsense on here and other threads. But turkeys gonna vote for Christmas Hmm

Ineverdidmind · 20/10/2020 23:16

I think we could be facing riots. Its a step too far, people are desperate.

The South are bloody clueless about how much stricter things have been for us up here for AGES. And they're whining about going to Tier 2. Dont anyone dare suggest Manchester doesn't have a right to be angry.

I'm raging.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2020 23:20

iirc, Manchester were promised some other government money much earlier to compensate on their spending on Covid, but the government reneged,
so there is a big black hole in Greater Manchester finances
