The country is falling apart, mass unemployment looming, unrest, mental health crisis, education of a generation screwed, people in care homes isolated and alone......what the fucking hell is going on. I can't take anymore

It is shit at the moment, no doubt but I agree with the calls for some historical perspective.

One ‘positive’ is the torchlight that has been shone on the UK’s economy being built on sand (service industries) hopefully we can take stock & begin to move in a direction where this can be rectified somewhat when we start coming out the other side

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 20/10/2020 17:42

There’s a difference between the idea that the entire nation as a whole is fucked forever more and the fact that some people right now are suffering. I don’t want to diminish anyone’s pain, if you’ve lost your livelihood or have missed out on vital medical treatment for example then obviously things are very bleak for you. However that’s not the experience everyone is having, if you’re kind of muddling through, but feel stressed and anxious I think it is worth looking at the bigger picture that we will get through this eventually.

It’s the climate change that’s going to do for us all not this.

Catchytune · 20/10/2020 17:44

It’s not like that where I am.
I teach and it’s fine. I worked the summer half term in lockdown with the kids.I got a weekend job in September 3 days after applying.
My arts based husband lost work but has done a couple of his normal jobs and works doing deliveries. He’s too busy really.
In fact no one I know including others in my husbands line of work hasn’t nanaged to find a job over the summer.
Cases are few and far between even in care homes.
Pubs are doing good business and it’s nice not going to the bar.10pm closing is perfect when you get up at 6am for work.

Maybe it will go Pete Tong but that’s not what it’s like now ( or even has been since it started in March).

Toddlerteaplease · 20/10/2020 17:46

Pandemics do not last for ever. As a pp said. Worse things have happened in the past. It'll be ok.

rashalert · 20/10/2020 17:46

Are countries with socialist governments coping any better than those with conservative governments?

Of course not.

If the moon were to fall out of the sky, some daft twats would say it's because of the Tory government-that's how thick and short sighted they are.

Little, little one track brains yabbering away like programmed robots.

TheVanguardSix · 20/10/2020 17:46

It's not even covid and lockdowns worrying me at this point. It's the no deal Brexit. That's a significant worry. There's a feast of platitudes on this thread and that's all very well and good, but perhaps seeing DH deal with an onslaught of patients whose mental health and life saving treatments are collapsing has coloured by view to the more 'doom and gloom' one. I live with a guy who's seen a fair few dead bodies these past few months. Sorry I'm not glass half-full about the impact economic crises can have on a population.

Caroncanta · 20/10/2020 17:47

PLEASE STOP VOTING TORY,

Labour wouldn't have done any better that's for sure.

So looking at the bigger picture means an I'm alright Jack attitude? Nope. The country is royally fucked. UK is leaving the EU right at the time they need it most, and has monumentally fucked up on this pandemic. You might be alright for now, but its all going to get worse.

" Can you focus on something trivial to distract you. Like get all het up that you cant get hold of exactly the right shade of orange pumpkin."

Shouldn't work but it does, doesn't it?

PLEASE STOP VOTING TORY, people!

No chance. If you think Labour would have done better, you're living in cloud cuckoo land.

Spannwr1971 · 20/10/2020 17:54

Seems bad now, but the sunny uplands of Brexit are just around the corner, and being released from the EU will fix everything.

Things look pretty bleak at the moment. However we do have a benefit system in place and people will still have a roof over their head and food to eat. It wont be the roof you want, the food wont be what you want but you can survive on it. It is possible to build back from that.

Hard times can make you more determined and focused - been there, got the t shirt.

The biggest problem facing the world is climate change and actually this is giving me more hope. When the world pulls together and throws money at a problem it is surprising just how fast things advance. I recognise the " not the war again" but wars produce rapid technological advance. In a very short space of time treatments have been found, vaccines are being tested, there are other things like uvc disinfection for ventilation systems, improved methods of ventilating sick people. This is giving me hope that similar things may happen with climate change.

Wouldn’t have voted for Jeremy if my life depended on it. Sorry.
rashalert · 20/10/2020 18:00

Imagine your life depending on Corbyn and Abbot.

Mintlegs · 20/10/2020 18:01

Agree!

Malbecqueen · 20/10/2020 18:01

I think our situation is terrifying - and falling out of the EU with no deal (which is frankly what our government have been angling for over the last few months) just makes me feel ill. It would be bad enough without Covid, but now - heaven only knows. Millions will suffer.

AestheticWitch · 20/10/2020 18:01

At least we have Boris and his jolly japes. 😆😆😆

I'll get my coat.

Joeblack066 · 20/10/2020 18:02

@Zaphodsotherhead

What I always quote here is the Foot and Mouth crisis back in 2000.

Here in the countryside it was devastating. Farmers lost their whole flocks and herds. There was a mass mental health crisis and financial crisis in the whole industry. People couldn't travel, couldn't go on holiday (in this country). Farms were locked down, no travel in or out. It was horrible, awful. Huge impace.

And now? Almost no one remembers it. Farmers have new flocks and herds, new bloodlines. The countryside isn't overgrown acres of unowned land (as was predicted by all the farmers going out of business). Everything bounced back, apart from a few souls who were so shocked and devastated that they went out of farming altogether.

We will bounce back. Humans want the status quo restored as soon as possible. Give us a vaccine and we'll all be back out there pubbing and clubbing as fast as anything. New businesses will take the place of ones that went out of business. In twenty years, this will just be a memory.

A great analogy here. This is the reality. It is scary, and feels bleak; your feelings are very valid. But we WILL overcome this and bounce back. 💕💜👍🏻
MadameBlobby · 20/10/2020 18:04

It’s completely ridiculous now. There just doesn’t seem a good reason any more for the damage the government are causing by the restrictions.

AlwaysLatte · 20/10/2020 18:04

Well we're not, but we have tough times to get through - we will!

Why? Are we the only country with restrictions?

I hadn't realised that life was going on as normal everywhere else in the world.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 20/10/2020 18:09

OK, I am really feeling for my 19 year old cooped up in halls of residence, no face to face teaching, no lab time (STEM degree) but I am so thankful I am not waving goodbye as he heads towards the trenches, or isn't part of the conscript - average age of those killed 19 - for the Vietnam war.

It isn't great at present. Many are facing particular tragedies in their own families. There is plenty to worry about in years to come, but caving in won't help. We need to hang on to the community and neighbourly spirit that prevailed in the first weeks of lockdown. And leave space for those who really need support for the tragedies.

marveloustimeruiningeverything · 20/10/2020 18:15

While all of Europe is facing this, at least they haven't fucked themselves over going forward by flouncing out of the EU without a deal.
