The country is falling apart, mass unemployment looming, unrest, mental health crisis, education of a generation screwed, people in care homes isolated and alone......what the fucking hell is going on. I can't take anymore

OP posts:

Could we please please PLEASE stop talking about the fucking wars!!!

catsjammies · 20/10/2020 17:26

It does seem like it, but we really aren't fucked. Life might (probably will) be harder for a lot of people for a while, but life goes on and you adjust. The relative wealth we have nowadays is incredible compared to the poverty in this country in the past.
There has been some positive vaccine news in the past few days and things could be moving on that front fairly soon. That should make a big difference to how quickly the virus spreads and will hopefully see levels drop quickly.
Like is very scary right now, I get knots in my stomach thinking about Brexit and the US election, but even if times are quite hard there will still be happiness.

MsPeachh · 20/10/2020 17:26

Some very flippant responses given that many people are facing job losses. Your job is a roof over your head and food on the table and a big part of many peoples’ identity.

Second, third and fourth this! Please
rashalert · 20/10/2020 17:28

It is an awful time but it's not here for ever-steps are being taken for vaccines and there won't be a moment of the day when someone, somewhere, is not looking for a cure.

Pessimists will paint everything black. Optimists paint it white. But there is a middle ground which is it is bad at the moment but it won't last for ever, let alone years.

Let's comply with the measures and we will all find a way out.

Jennygentle · 20/10/2020 17:28

We’re not fucked. It’s just frustrating and upsetting and boring, all at once.
I’m not trying to minimise anyone’s distress but a quick flick through any history textbook should provide a bit of perspective.

MaxNormal · 20/10/2020 17:29

Life might (probably will) be harder for a lot of people for a while, but life goes on and you adjust.

I'm sure everyone who is facing losing the homes they've spent years working hard for will be grateful for your perspective.

AdoraBell · 20/10/2020 17:29

I’m also worried but trying keep positive. That’s not easy. DDs in Uni, both in cities locked down. I was made redundant in June.
I’m seriously trying to look past the horizon.

Benjispruce2 · 20/10/2020 17:29

One foot in front of the other. It won’t last forever.Smile

PollyPelargonium52 · 20/10/2020 17:30

I do not think education is ruined as children and young people can always catch up. It is unemployment that is the main worry for many age groups.

MaxNormal · 20/10/2020 17:31

I'm so sick of this Pollyannaish bullshit. How does reminding yourself that reams of peasants died of the plague or that people had the bejesus bombed out of them decades ago help anyone when they've lost their job, the economy is screwed, and they can't get another one?

People need to get their heads out of their arses, actually pay attention, look around, and see what is happening to other people who actually exist and are having a shit time in the actual present.

needanewidea · 20/10/2020 17:32

PLEASE STOP VOTING TORY, people!

I'm sorry to shout, but all of this was utterly predictable. I mean, not Covid specifically, but whatever crisis arises, all the Tories have to offer is exploiting any situation on behalf of their cronies and consolidating their own power.

They haven't a clue how most people live, nor do they care. There was an illuminating thread on Mumsnet a while back about what Boris is like in real life. The answer was pretty much, that he feels contempt for us all.

Labour aren't exactly covering themselves in roses at the moment, particularly on how they treat women, but come on, they've got to be better than this lot of self serving arseholes.

A no deal Brexit is going to break us.
Then we've got climate change looming.

And we are at war, of sorts, but our government isn't doing much about it. Russia and China are working to destabilise the West
www.ft.com/content/8103dcc2-fbb7-4d5d-b5f9-ee9f0db1f1ed

We have several long term threats to deal with, but while our government is more concerned with giving lucrative contracts to their mates (same as it ever was) we're all being sold down the river.

Undercovermuvver · 20/10/2020 17:32

I walked outside of the station in London and took a picture of all of the offices. The commuters are not coming back. The offices are empty.

It’s a very small snapshot.

We are fucked
magnarocks · 20/10/2020 17:33

@Zaphodsotherhead

What I always quote here is the Foot and Mouth crisis back in 2000.

Here in the countryside it was devastating. Farmers lost their whole flocks and herds. There was a mass mental health crisis and financial crisis in the whole industry. People couldn't travel, couldn't go on holiday (in this country). Farms were locked down, no travel in or out. It was horrible, awful. Huge impace.

And now? Almost no one remembers it. Farmers have new flocks and herds, new bloodlines. The countryside isn't overgrown acres of unowned land (as was predicted by all the farmers going out of business). Everything bounced back, apart from a few souls who were so shocked and devastated that they went out of farming altogether.

We will bounce back. Humans want the status quo restored as soon as possible. Give us a vaccine and we'll all be back out there pubbing and clubbing as fast as anything. New businesses will take the place of ones that went out of business. In twenty years, this will just be a memory.

That's a lovely analogy. It's very true.
the80sweregreat · 20/10/2020 17:34

Max normal, well said!
Going back through History is a good thing but not right now. Not when people won't have jobs and won't have a home to live in.

needanewidea · 20/10/2020 17:34

Err. History tells us countries' fortunes can change with time, and with them them the outlook of the people in them.

I don't find much comfort there. The UK is heading for disaster IMO.

Also, I don't see anything like climate change in the history books.

It's a global threat we need to pull together for. But that's not happening.

Fressia123 · 20/10/2020 17:34

After watching the Manchester's mayor speech I'm really worried about social unrest.

rashalert · 20/10/2020 17:35

@MaxNormal. No-one is denying the hardship and tragedy that is affecting many of us.

It's not Pollyannish to believe it won't last for ever. It's not as if anyone is ignoring it-everything is being tried to stop it all over the world.

Spreading posts like yours just upsets and preys on the nerves of those who are already anxious.

You can do nothing about what is going on personally but you can choose to hope-with cause-rather than make your life an absolute misery.

There is no harm whatsoever at looking at all the other things the world has faced and taking comfort that it passed through all of them and so too with this.

Bollocks.

If you want to see a 'self serving arsehole' please spare a moment to image google Andy Burnham.

Yes but a lot of these people are working from home. My sisters, husband, friends...just because the offices are empty it doesn't mean these companies have collapsed (a lot are still going strong while some have unfortunately run into harder times). I am not a person who usually relies on the government but I think Sunak has done a good job of helping those in need. The demand exceeds anything ever recorded so naturally, there are crinkles to iron out but you cannot fault the government on their lack of help.

It hasn't been easy for anyone but looking at the world with doom and gloom tinted glasses doesn't help anyone.

PermanentlyDizzy · 20/10/2020 17:38

I understand how you feel. I have been there myself at times, but having had a life of many ups and downs, some worse than others, some I am still and will always be struggling with, I have learned to put one foot in front of the other and try to hang on to even the slightest chink of light or bit of hope. The alternative is letting myself sink into darker and darker depths, which ultimately leads to me being unable to be there for my dcs or give anything back to society.

It’s not easy, I’m not suggesting it is, but it’s better than the alternative.

Have you seen 107 year old Nancy Stewart’s letter? She has been through such a lot in her long life, experienced loss, pain, heartache and really tough times, but she is still here and sharing a positive message. I aspire to be more like her and less like my usual tendency for being a pessimist. That’s what my family need from me, regardless of what adversity we face, they need me to be strong and optimistic, to help them feel safe. So that’s what I’m trying my best to do.

Nancy’s letter.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/10/2020 17:38

@justgeton

A bit less of the drama and a bit more perspective. We're not seeing our kids and husbands off to war, we're not facing nuclear disaster. We were told it would take months and several lockdowns.
Absolutely.
KittCat · 20/10/2020 17:38

Yes, please stop voting Tory.
We've got a no deal brexit to look forward to yet, yay!! 😧

Chilling.

I'm finding the crushing relentlessness of it all hard to take. If there was just the merest chink of light I'd feel a whole lot better.
