How much disinfecting are you doing at home?

In the first wave we were really careful and regularly used alcohol or disinfectant to wipe down counters, door handles and other frequently used surfaces.

We’ve stopped doing that now really and gone back to fairly normal measures. Not sure about over disinfecting being a good idea in the long-term or not.

What is everyone else doing?

Am not now, nor have we ever done more cleaning at home than ‘normal’.

More vigilant about washing hands on arriving home but that’s it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/10/2020 11:17

No more than normal - and never did back in March. So kitchen surfaces wiped down after meals, bathroom cleaned three times a week, that’s it. Things like light switches and door handles would be done as part of a big clean, along with skirting boards Etc.

MayFayre · 20/10/2020 11:20

I’ve gone back to normal. I went a bit crazy with it back in March but only for a week or so.

bloodywhitecat · 20/10/2020 11:21

Nothing more than usual, haven't changed the products I use or my routine I like to be careful with the amount of chemicals we use as we are on a septic tank.

mynameiscalypso · 20/10/2020 11:22

Does getting our cleaner back count?

Lumene · 20/10/2020 11:33

Thanks all, I think this was me too Grin

When it first started I was doing it a lot. Daily. Now I still wipe surfaces occasionally with anti bac wipes instead of just clean but not disinfecting daily. I don't quarantine post or wipe down groceries. I'm less worried now that it has been shown that the chances of catching it from a surface are minimal. Yes, the virus can survive for a number or hours on surfaces, but even if you were to pick up a particle and touch your nose of mouth, it wouldn't be enough to affect you severely. The main way people get infected is by breathing in contaminated droplets. The higher the concentration of viral load in the air, the more likely and the more severe you are likely to be infected. This is why masks and ventilation in enclosed, crowded spaces are so important. It's a respiratory illness after all. It's not like bugs that cause food poisoning. I wish the government would emphasise this a bit more. It's like the school, constantly going on about disinfecting classrooms etc. That's great but pointless if you're not going to open the windows and virus is still hanging around in the air. You're better off opening a window than constantly disinfecting everything.

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2020 11:55

I like to make sure our house is clean , Loos and high touch areas and washing hands etc but I must admit I'm not 'deep cleaning ' as i did back in spring! Was washing everything when the weather was nice and sunny and could get them dry. Bit of a spring clean.
I don't have little children or pets so that helps and does stay tidy mostly.

OpheliasCrayon · 20/10/2020 11:58

Nothing more than I did before all this. I like to think I'm a fairly clean person!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/10/2020 12:13

We’re ventilating more than disinfecting.
Have stuck with the improved hand hygiene though.

monkeytennis97 · 20/10/2020 12:16

Cleaning shopping (delivered) with isopropyl alcohol that's it.

monkeytennis97 · 20/10/2020 12:17

Still quarantining post and amazon deliveries.

Augustbreeze · 20/10/2020 12:21

I'm doing touch points a bit more but not nearly as much as in March. As others have said, definitely more ventilating though, because that has been shown to be more crucial.

PleasantVille · 20/10/2020 12:21

I haven't done anything extra at all and have no plans to, in a crazy moment I bought a pack of wipes in March simply because they were available in the supermarket, still unopened in the cupboard

Still waiting for proven scientific evidence that anyone in the world has been infected solely by post or shopping

Aragog · 20/10/2020 12:22

I've never cleaned shopping and parcels etc, even in March.
But I have anti bac'd lots in bathroom and kitchen, etc. I'm clinically vulnerable so tried to be careful. Was also using anti bad constantly t]at school in my classroom, as well as increased cleaning.

I've still tested positive last week, despite extra measures and being careful.

VinylDetective · 20/10/2020 12:25

The only change we made was more frequent hand washing. It’s habit now.

BasinHaircut · 20/10/2020 12:33

Are people really quarantining post/parcels and cleaning shopping? Really?

We’ve done nothing. We’ve all got stinking colds at the moment but that’s come home from school with DS I’m 100% sure. None of us have been ill at all otherwise all year and we’ve had many many deliveries.

CorporeSarnie · 20/10/2020 12:41

I wash my hands after touching post but don't quarantine it. Clean light switches and door handles more than before but less than in march when I was cleaning things with isopropanol daily. Shopping gets put in cupboards and I don't clean it extra, as I don't really think that surfaces are of major significance. All hands washed as soon as come in, face covered anywhere we're likely to be unable to maintain distancing and rarely go anywhere much, work from home 4 in 5, don't eat out or go to pubs etc.

Othering · 20/10/2020 12:42

Same.
ultimatebadass · 20/10/2020 12:46

I am vulnerable and in Tier 3. There have been over 20 cases at my DH work.

Have always wiped down door handles, light switches, phones, tv remotes, bannisters, etc numerous times per day. I am still wiping down shopping and quarantining post, been doing it since March.

Am fucking sick of the whole thing now, but will carry on doing it

Jrobhatch29 · 20/10/2020 12:47

No more than usual. I don't think it does anyone any good to live in a sterile home... And with 3 kids and a dog mine definitely isn't sterile ha

alreadytaken · 20/10/2020 12:49

sanitising the bells that delivery people ring and also the handles of the bins. Apart from that normal cleaning.

lazylinguist · 20/10/2020 12:50

None, and I never did. I use normal cleaning products as usual- no disinfectant or antibac stuff, and clean the same amount as always.

kowari · 20/10/2020 12:50

Never did it the first time around. We only have bar soap for handwashing and bleach to clean the loo. Nothing else in terms of disinfectant.

nex18 · 20/10/2020 12:52

My addition to cleaning came when we were allowed to see other humans. I started to wipe the door handle, light switch, flush in the downstairs loo when we were expecting visitors. I still do that. I will stop when we hit tier 2 and visitors are cancelled.
