How much disinfecting are you doing at home?

In the first wave we were really careful and regularly used alcohol or disinfectant to wipe down counters, door handles and other frequently used surfaces.

We’ve stopped doing that now really and gone back to fairly normal measures. Not sure about over disinfecting being a good idea in the long-term or not.

What is everyone else doing?

None. Zero.
And I hate it when someone at work does it, it's completely unnecessary and makes you weaker in the long run.

Pachonga · 20/10/2020 20:20

The usual amount, but I do our front door handle and pushplate daily, more out of habit than anything. Plus it gives me a couple of minutes outside and looks nice when it’s done.

I thought current thinking was there just isn’t enough of the virus on surfaces to infect someone and that continuing with the handwashing and sanitizer advice is just good public health practice anyway and can’t do any harm, rather than an actual strategy to combat the virus?

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/10/2020 20:23

Just the same as before covid.

katy1213 · 20/10/2020 20:35

Funny how all the born slobs are surviving just as well as the disinfecters of post and wipers of shopping, isn't it?

Magpiefeather · 20/10/2020 20:39

Just normal level of cleaning now. But we don’t have anyone come in our house and we all wash hands when we get home, DH changes clothes when he gets in from work (I’m on mat leave so just here all the bloody time). I no longer wash shopping either.

Bargebill19 · 20/10/2020 20:47

No - I do too much in the day job to care once I get home. Dh doesn’t seem to know where the cleaning products are kept. We will just have to take our chances.

None really. Bleach goes down the loo and I have a bathroom spray cleaner for the rest of the bathroom but the kitchen is cleaned with soapy water and I’ve never cleaned a door handle or light switch in my life.

Jellybean27 · 20/10/2020 22:22

Speedy recovery @Aragog!

RaspberryCoulis · 21/10/2020 08:05

None. I have one bottle of dettol in the house which is uses every so often in the washing machine on a clean cycle. And bleach for the loo.

I have never wiped and disinfected door handles and light switches. Utterly pointless in your own home.

OpheliasCrayon · 21/10/2020 08:53

@Bowerbird5

Cleaning surfaces more. No t door handles as much only if we go out I do them when we come back. We had a builder in at lockdown and had no shower for lockdown he came as soon as it was lifted and I asked him to use other entrance and I did the door, bannister and bathroom before and after him each time. I think he was grateful as he could smell it so he felt safe and so did we. He is dues back to do some other jobs inside and out so we will be doing the same.

Still doing shopping. Washing hands as soon as we get in. I have to remind DH but now opening post, burning envelopes and washing hands straight after.

I have asthma and an erratic immune system, allergies, high BP and have previously had a heart attack from a virus. I’m not taking chances.

Whilst I understand you have underlying conditions (so do i).... Why on earth are you burning your envelopes? And where???? Why can't you just throw them away?????
BiddyPop · 21/10/2020 08:59

Washing hands when we come in from being outside doing anything.

Having hand sanitiser for the car for using when we are out and about (and in my handbag).

Having a bottle of hand sanitiser by the door for use by anyone visiting (or they can wash their hands).

We keep the house clean anyway, and DH does wipe down where any tradesperson would have handled after they go (we don't have any other visitors).

So no additional cleaning on a daily basis of the house, just more rigorous hand cleanliness - but we do now wipe down surfaces after visitors which we would not have done before Covid.

@PleasantVille

I haven't done anything extra at all and have no plans to, in a crazy moment I bought a pack of wipes in March simply because they were available in the supermarket, still unopened in the cupboard

Still waiting for proven scientific evidence that anyone in the world has been infected solely by post or shopping

NZ. Their track & trace is brilliant & so few cases they have the resources to do it properly. Read up on the person who got it from a push top bin lid & the other one who got it from a lift button.

It's not the main source of transmission, but it is transmitted like that.

Plus the person saying you won't get much of it by touching something then touching your face. That's not correct either. You can get more than enough easily. It's teeny. I forget how many now, but there many many times more than you 'need' to be contaminated, just on a pin head.

bathsh3ba · 21/10/2020 11:11

No, and never really did. I take the attitude that if we're going out into the world, we're either going to catch it or we're not. Wash hands/sanitise on arrival at work/school/supermarket/shops and before eating out and that's about it.

cologne4711 · 21/10/2020 11:16

No more than usual, which is very little. I did wipe over door handles etc in the early weeks but that's all gone by the wayside months ago.

Eviebeans · 21/10/2020 11:26

Not cleaning as much as we did from March to august - probably went OTT then
Do still wipe down surfaces after visitors although not as important now we are in tier 2
Do clean bins on bin day tho
Use ordinary bars of soap for hands as developed contact dermatitis recently - first time ever

Rainallnight · 21/10/2020 11:32

None. I figure if someone infected has had enough contact with us to leave some on doorknobs etc, then we’re already exposed.
