How much disinfecting are you doing at home?

In the first wave we were really careful and regularly used alcohol or disinfectant to wipe down counters, door handles and other frequently used surfaces.

We’ve stopped doing that now really and gone back to fairly normal measures. Not sure about over disinfecting being a good idea in the long-term or not.

What is everyone else doing?

Not more than normal. My pre-pandemic normal already included things like door handles, light switches, washing hands after having been outside, to the loo, stroked the cat or before handling food, before eating or opening the fridge. I already washed my hands much more often than anyone I know. My mother was very clean and was always going on about these things (I don't have OCD though, it's just a habit taught by mum). I do have ugly hands and they look older than my friends due to all the washing.

SqidgeBum · 20/10/2020 14:30

None really compared to pre covid times. I give my kitche counters a spray of antibacterial maybe every 2 days. They get a general wipe down after every washup. Obviously I use bleach in my toilet and clean my bathroom regularly (once a week normally). I clean the hard floor with antibacterial every week or 2. It gets a hoover nearly every day. I dont disinfect anything else really.

DH does work in peoples houses, so we wash his uniform every day and he has a shower when he gets in. Thats the only change.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/10/2020 14:31

None at all

Wash hands when we come in and that's that

DesireAs · 20/10/2020 14:33

No more than usual pre-Covid cleaning - even after my son tested positive 3 weeks ago. Neither my husband nor I developed any symptoms.

NastyBlouse · 20/10/2020 14:36

None. I don't really use disinfectant (except a tiny bit of Zoflora down the plugholes), and most of the mainstream chemically cleaners stuff like Flash, Cif, Mr Muscle make my eyes stream so I avoid them.

I tend to use an eco brand all-purpose cleaner or glass cleaner for most things. Or diluted black Marseille liquid soap if I can get it.

I sort of half-arsedly bought some bleach back in March, and then quickly discovered why I don't normally buy bleach. I cannot stand the smell of it; it sticks in my throat and makes me feel sick. I used it once to clean the toilets and then couldn't do it any more, and went back to my usual loo cleaner (some eco one that's supposed to smell like the oceans they're saving).

The only thing I anti-bac is my exercise bike after I've used it because it seems to help stop the room smelling sweaty.

I bought some lovely little French bar soaps made with shea butter for handwashing (for while the advice was a bit vague on whether liquid handwash broke down the outer 'sheath' of corona so I switched to bar soap) and we've stuck with those, they're lovely.

I've never wiped shopping or quarantined post or parcels, personally.

LolaLollypop · 20/10/2020 14:37

More stringent hand washing after being out and about. That’s pretty much it. I think I quarantined post / wiped stuff down for about a week in March before realising the risk was absolutely tiny.

peachescariad · 20/10/2020 14:38

None and never have - still have to remind grown up DSs to wash their hands once they get in from work....not sure how thorough they are though.
DS 21 had covid end of Feb but we didn't know it at the time!

RegularHumanBartender · 20/10/2020 14:52

None.

I'm loving the burning envelopes poster. Because putting them in the bin isn't dramatic enough 😂

inappropriateraspberry · 20/10/2020 15:05

None, just normal cleaning. As long as you wash your hands regularly/properly there shouldn't be a problem.

Funkypolar · 20/10/2020 15:14

Nothing. “Anti bac” doesn’t kill viruses.

KateF · 20/10/2020 15:24

I work in a room full of babies who cough, sneeze and dribble on me. Not much point doing anything more than regular hand washing at home!

lazylinguist · 20/10/2020 15:27

Burning envelopes

Shock Why? Why on earth wouldn't you just put them in the bin/recycling?

VinylDetective · 20/10/2020 15:51

I know. I can’t even think where I’d burn them.

Spodge · 20/10/2020 15:55

I wash my hands more frequently than before all this started. Cleaning levels are back to where they were before. I never got to the stage of washing my shopping but I did increase my disinfecting regime for a while. Now I am so sick of cleaning everything twice when I use the gym that I can't face more wiping when I get home!

emmathedilemma · 20/10/2020 16:00

Have only ever done cleaning as normal and washed my hands after opening the post/ putting shopping away and when i come in from having been out.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/10/2020 18:31

We wipes down shopping, post and deliveries get opened immediately and boxes straight outdoors to the recycling bin, touch points wipes down every evening.

TheFluffiestCat · 20/10/2020 18:33

Not disinfecting anything extra. When DD first went back to school I sprayed her lunchbox with dettol spray but soon stopped. I wash my hands and use sanitiser more than pre-Covid but haven't changed any other cleaning routines.

QueenofmyPrinces · 20/10/2020 18:35

Burning envelopes

This has to be a joke? Grin

MiracletoCome · 20/10/2020 18:39

Nothing extra from normal

Redcrayons · 20/10/2020 18:42

Just as part of my usual cleaning now. Was probably a little Too Keen at the beginning, partly fueled by all the ‘shall I bleach the strawberries’ threads on here.

zigazee · 20/10/2020 18:43

I haven't changed my cleaning routine since the start of the pandemic. I don't use disinfectant, I just use a spray on cleaner and wipe it off with a damp cloth. I've always washed my hands when I get home and now I use sanitiser more when out and about, but to be honest that's more because it's expected. I'm not vulnerable and not particularly concerned about my family's risk level.

usernamewastaken · 20/10/2020 19:06

Nothing extra for me. I have a friend who cleans shopping, disinfects her whole house daily, etc. Yet, her and her family members now seem to have a runny nose and sniffles all the time.

Camomila · 20/10/2020 19:44

I make sure everyone washes their hands and DS1 gets out of his school uniform when he gets home, apart from that we're cleaning as normal.

DS2 is weaning/crawling...we have enough highclair wiping and floor hoovering to do!

Camomila · 20/10/2020 19:47

*highchair.

Family1st2020 · 20/10/2020 19:50
