Anyone else feeling optimistic about the recent vaccine headlines?

Newgirlint0wn · 19/10/2020 16:27

Just that really, a few different news articles suggesting a vaccine could be available by early 2021.

Anyone else feel optimistic this could be true?
I know it doesn’t mean back to normality, but surely a successful vaccine this soon could be the path back to normal life?

Yes it's given me a little bit of hope

MillieVanilla · 19/10/2020 16:48

I think you have to see it as a positive in a year of disappointments. It's always going to be the sign of hope.
Now we have to hope the government doesn't cock up the roll out and all the tin hat conspiracy theorists don't beggar it up for everyone else
I think it will be the biggest vaccination roll out since polio.

As above poster, fingers crossed it’s not another roll out cock up like many of the other cock ups this year

Ethelfleda · 19/10/2020 17:04

Seems positive to me but hold on to your hat, you’re about to get a plethora of comments telling you that it is not a ‘magic bullet’
Some people love to piss on other people’s bonfires.

I am still expecting first doses to frontline workers (and maybe the ECV) around Christmas and the next tranche to start in the New Year.

I’m CV and over 50, so I won’t be at the front of the queue, but will be ahead of healthy 60 year olds, I think. I will still obey ALL the rules, for as long as they are in force. But as soon as I have had my second jab, I will be much more comfortable doing some of the things we are permitted to do, but I haven’t felt comfortable to do. For example, DH and I have just agreed we are not going away for a short break, even though it’s perfectly allowed to do so. Roll on February half-term - first holiday in a year!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/10/2020 18:31

I am optimistic. I was delighted by the news. I have no doubt it’s going to feel frustratingly slow because there are so many people to get through (I looked it up and there are 3.2 million over 80s in the U.K.!) but once the roll outs start we will at last be able to feel we are making very definite progress. And every thousand people jabbed will be hundreds of families brought back together again. It will be awesome.
Not a magic bullet - yes, sure, we aren’t going to wake up and find it’s suddenly gone away, but with progress in treatments and tests as well as this, things will get slowly back to normal.

This and once the vulnerable are no longer at risk we can hopefully ease some measures.

I also feel that for people like the deputy CMO and Scientists from SAGE to say positive things it must be good news.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/10/2020 18:41

Yes MadameBlobby, the experts who have been saying this are people who have been generally quite cautious up to now.

Marchmarch · 19/10/2020 18:45

No. And for full disclosure I used to work for a big vaccines manufacturer. The tolerance on safety and efficacy is different in vaccines than in the usual drugs because the overall effect on the population is usually such that it’s worth having a higher level of adverse events.

So I'm taking part of an nhs study on a Covid vaccine that's in the final stage of testing.
I was told by the consultand that there are 3 vaccines in the final stage,
The Novo vaccine, oxford vaccine and a vaccine by pfizer.
There's a chance of a release in December, obviously front line health care workers will be first, then the most vulnerable after that a roll out would be decided.
These pharmacies are all ready stock piling the vaccines.

So yes you are right to be hopeful.

fluffyugg · 19/10/2020 19:19

I am feeling much more positive about this too but I did also hear this....

Do you mean no you aren’t feeling positive or no you won’t have a vaccine?
GoldenOmber · 19/10/2020 19:30

@fluffyugg

It sounds from that article like he's saying a vaccine won't be available for widespread use before spring. That's not contradicting the claims that a vaccine will be approved for some use or start some kind of rollout this year.

I think news stuff about when there will be a vaccine could do a much better job in general of which question they're answering out of:

  • When will a vaccine be proven safe and effective?
  • When will a vaccine be authorised for use where i live?
  • When will the first people start getting vaccinated?
  • When will I get vaccinated?
  • When will enough people be vaccinated that we don't have to do all this social distancing any more?

Those will all have different answers and it is annoying seeing news articles saying "person A claims we'll have a vaccine by the end of the year, but person B poured cold water on that by saying not until spring!" when A and B were talking about different things.

tempnamechange98765 · 19/10/2020 19:38

Thanks OP, I actually hadn't read any of these stories because I'm in Wales so have been quite depressed and worried waiting for news of the fire breaker, this thread has made my day (second only to hearing that primary schools and nurseries won't be closing!).

Very good news, let's all enjoy this hopeful feeling Smile

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/10/2020 19:51

Yes exactly, GoldenOmber!
I am optimistic it will be rolled out shortly after or even before Christmas.
Is it likely my mum and dad will have had it in time and I will be able to spend Christmas with them? Pretty much vanishingly unlikely, I would think! But there’s not a zero chance someone will be in that position, and that would be wonderful. (I somewhat cynically think the political capital from officially launching it before Christmas would be so great that they would pull out all the stops to do a few before Christmas even if the numbers were so small that it would be little more than symbolic.)

Rainbowllama4 · 19/10/2020 20:45

Yes I am hopeful, this time next year life could be back to normal and I will never take it for granted again.

MillieVanilla · 19/10/2020 20:51

I think even knowing that from spring many more vulnerable people will be able to feel like they can enjoy their lives again without the fear of this bastard virus is enough.
It would be impossible to get so many millions of people simultaneously vaccinated. There is a huge sense of impatience of course, everyone has a desperate reason to want it, like seeing family, getting their business back running, feeling safe, depression, weddings, christenings, milestone parties, kids being able to enjoy knocking about with their mates again. I personally have made a post-covid bucket list of things I want to do that I've put off, like I want to run into the sea at Branksome beach, I want to go and see a West End show, I want to go to a festival.
But as my dear departed gran used to say, patience is a virtue.
It's coming, it's within reach, the end is in sight.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/10/2020 20:53

Even if we get a safe, efficacious vaccine (not a given)

It will take literally years to get to the whole population

whatswithtodaytoday · 19/10/2020 21:01

I'm very hopeful. The Pfizer vaccine is already being produced in vast quantities, ready for its expected approval.

I'm not expecting everything to get back to normal next year, but if my mid-70s parents can have it and start coming to our house and interacting with their only grandson again, I'll be happy.

My main worry is that this useless government will fuck up the roll out and other countries will be way ahead of us. Doubtless all the rich and powerful will get their vaccines as soon as they're available.

The whole population don't need it though.

Looks like without any great effort we vaccinate 14 million people every year for flu without any particular drama
