Does anyone think we will get a break for Christmas?

It's been hinted that restrictions may ease for the holidays but does anyone actually believe it or do you think it's just a way to try and get people to stick down to the rules?

I live in Lancashire, in tier 3 and it seems absolutely nobody is paying attention to the rules! (Like to point out that me and my family are 🙈).

@AlwaysLatte There was over 95% compliance in the first lockdown.

What im horrified about is the assault on a man in his 60s that removed his mask to speak to his 90 year old deaf mum. Seems to have flown completely under the radar despite the claim this is all for the vulnerable.

PolkadotGiraffe · 20/10/2020 01:03
@PolkadotGiraffe I agree I think there would have been a difference if lockdown had been pre Cheltenham
It would have been different, better. But not different enough. What was happening (that this would be a pandemic) was clear when the Chinese locked down Wuhan. Before in fact. Then Italy and Spain and still our Government did nothing. Some of us (me included) were shouting that the borders needed to be closed back in Feb. Ignored by our MPs. Accused of scaremongering by friends. Boris was off on holiday so ignored it all. Imagine now if the only restriction was no international travel? I think most people would take that. We could have fully supported the impacted businesses for far less money than we've spent and carried on with everything else as normal.

HeIenaDove · 20/10/2020 01:14

@PolkadotGiraffe Thats part of the reason why i get so pissed off . Especially when i see claims that poorer areas are less compliant.

PolkadotGiraffe · 20/10/2020 01:18

Anyone who looked at the early data about the exponential growth (the "R" rate: publicly published widely early on) and with a basic grasp of maths could see where it was going. We are an island, were in an ideal position to protect ourselves, if we chose to. This plus Brexit will go down as the biggest disasters in public policy in the last 100 years and they're both happened within a few years. I agree @HeIenaDove blaming the public is insane.

Yeah that's a joke. They are less able to comply. Because they live in densely populated areas, have a higher prevalence of underlying health conditions as a starting point, more people tend to have jobs where they cannot work from home, many cannot afford to self-isolate, people have to visit shops more frequently as they cannot afford larger, less regular shops etc etc...

But it's their fault. Hmm

PolkadotGiraffe · 20/10/2020 01:24

NZ have done so well because they a) acted early, and b) brought everyone together as a "team of 5 million". We are polarising everyone. In what universe will that make something that requires collective effort successful?

None.

@PolkadotGiraffe Please run as an MP Flowers

PolkadotGiraffe · 20/10/2020 01:32

@HeIenaDove thank you that is a huge compliment! But I am so shy and terrible at public speaking and cannot imagine a worse torture. 😆

PolkadotGiraffe · 20/10/2020 01:36

Also couldn't afford the pay cut! Poor Boris. Grin

Yeah Diddums Grin

We are in a Tier 1 area. Ds is at uni in a Tier 2 area. I'm.anticipating that he won't be able to come home for Christmas. If that's the case it will be sad but we will have to accept it.

How cruel @EmmaGrundyForPM. I certainly wouldn’t be leaving my DS alone at Christmas.

LadyMinerva · 20/10/2020 02:30

There was a press release just the other day advising that Covid had started putting plans in place to take leave over the Christmas / New Year period. I think a return is planned for mid January.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/10/2020 04:46

@Ecosse

How cruel *@EmmaGrundyForPM*. I certainly wouldn’t be leaving my DS alone at Christmas.
How dare you call me cruel.

If the rules don't change and we flout them and ds comes home for Christmas then my elderly widowed mother won't come and will be alone over Christmas. Ds shares a flat with his gf so he won't be alone. I will be extremely sad but we either follow the law and have my mother or we break the law and have ds. We can't do both as my mother is vulnerable.

It was in the nationals online yesterday Helena, shocking. And the irony was that the thug who hit the old man had got some fringed scarf round his gob so hardly properly masked himself!

Inkpaperstars · 20/10/2020 07:23

I think it totally depends on how things look nearer the time, case numbers, pressure on nhs etc.

Movinghouse2015 · 20/10/2020 07:34

@EmmaGrundyForPM I believe the plan is they isolate for two weeks before they come home for Christmas from uni.

My DS is also at uni. If he comes back for Christmas I'll not be able to bubble with my Dap if current rules reman the same.

We followed the rules last time and continue to do so. We will do the same over Christmas if needed xx

100% compliance whatever the situation, theres not many of us

StCharlotte · 20/10/2020 08:09

@FourTeaFallOut

I bet the flu and the norovirus are pissed that the new worker bagged all the Christmas leave.

DuaneBenziesvoice · 20/10/2020 08:16

@Ecosse

People will not go without seeing their families at Christmas regardless of what the rules are.
I would. Every cloud and all that. Grin
lynsey91 · 20/10/2020 08:35
@lynsey91 your neighbours sound like ours. Next door both tested positive last weekend. They have 3 kids and we have seen them several times going out and wbout 🙄
Both sides make me so angry. One side is a nurse and the other a care worker so you would think they would have more sense and consideration.

The husband of one had a test because he had symptoms and was off work while he waited for the result. He had to wait 5 days and yet his children still went to their schools and his wife still went to work! Thankfully the test was negative but, obviously, they didn't know it would be.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/10/2020 08:39

@Movinghouse2015 my son won't be able to isolate for 2 weeks as he has a p/t job. They're not allowed to take any leave in the run up to Christmas so he has to go. His gf cant go home as she lives abroad so if they came here they would both have to self isolate for 2 weeks. I hope your son makes it home for Christmas.

alreadytaken · 20/10/2020 08:39

Ecosse turns up on a lot of thread to spread misinformation - tried it on the data thread but not working there.

I will, if possible, visit my family before Christmas and spend time with them out of doors. We will not be meeting inside or in pubs and I wont be staying with them.

My only child has a partner, I expect they will be together for Christmas and we may not see them again all winter or may just meet outdoors.

Sensible people are following the science, not the government's ever changing rules. The science says the virus doesnt take time off. Science says this virus causes a nasty illness that kills unpredictably (33 year old fitness instructor recently), leaves 30% still breathless after 2 months, 40% with fatigue. No-one knows if there is long term damage because there has not been long term to study - but someone with long covid recently died of a heart attack. And if you dont die you still clog up a bed that the NHS needs to treat someone else, depriving someone of an operation needed to ease their pain or save their life.

Countries that control the virus have economies that recover faster. By not spreading the virus I'm also helping to save jobs.
