Safest exercise at the gym

When gyms reopened, I returned only to class activities as I thought they would be safer- sitting in one spot on a yoga mat or on a spin bike (classes moved to large halls) rather than the gym floor where I would be touching multiple items of equipment (albeit sanitised between use).

Now class activities have shut here. I also got a self isolation notification from the app, which I suspect came from the gym class I went to as it was the only place I was for a significant amount of time last week.

Obviously I’m SI so won’t be going anywhere right now btw.

What are your thoughts on the safety of using the gym floor right now? Do classes have more risk?

Unless an outdoor class, I’d be far more worried about airborne transmission than the gym floor.

MsMartini · 19/10/2020 09:48

Me too. The biggest risk by far is other people AFAIK, not objects.

willowdeandickson · 19/10/2020 10:18

Thanks, seems I was focusing too much on the contact transmission than the airborne risks!

Definitely more of an airborne risk. Unless it’s a well ventilated room with open windows I wouldn’t be going in areas with high numbers of cases at the moment.

But it’s a personal choice. I’m enjoyed running outdoors then doing You Tube videos at home.

AuntieMarys · 19/10/2020 10:24

I have no issue using the gym. Everyone is sanitising equipment and being sensible. I'll take the risk.

BertiesLanding · 19/10/2020 10:49

Exercising your absence.

BertiesLanding · 19/10/2020 10:50

Contact transmission is minimal compared to airborne transmission.

Rainbowllama4 · 19/10/2020 14:42

I’ve stopped going to the gym, mine isn’t following any social distancing measures or restricting numbers, some day’s it’s full. All those people huffing and puffing is too risky. I’m not fearful of Covid but I’d rather not catch it if I can.

PolarBearStrength · 19/10/2020 14:57

I’m using the gym itself. Everyone is being really good about wiping their equipment down between uses and every other piece of equipment is closed so no one is within 2m. It’s also been quieter than usual at the gym which helps!

I’ve been setting myself up little circuits with all the bits I need (boxes, steps, weights, an assault bike, kettle bells, a skipping rope... whatever!) so everything is in one place and I can just stay in my area. It works well for me.

ACautionaryTale · 19/10/2020 15:49

There have been hardly any cases of covid linked to gyms,

Keepdistance · 19/10/2020 15:54

I think in the studies thread theres a link where lots caught it at a gym 50+ cases i think abroad though

emmathedilemma · 19/10/2020 15:56

I'm also in an area where classes have been stopped but the gym is still open. I actually thought the classes felt safer as everyone had their own space marked out and equipment, whereas in the gym there's people moving around and using equipment others have used in the same session. The main risk will be airbourne transmission but given it's the only place I spend any time indoors with other people at the moment, it's a risk I'm willing to take for my mental as much as physical health.

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 16:09

I'm going swimming

CoffeeandCroissant · 19/10/2020 16:33

As others have said I would focus more on ventilation and distance from others, rather than surfaces.

CoffeeandCroissant · 19/10/2020 18:02

"However, these restrictions did not prevent the outbreak in this case and although difficult to definitively prove, airborne transmission would seem likely to be a large factor."

Using the spin room to spin independently using online classes. Nobody there but me.

Doingitaloneandproud · 19/10/2020 20:33

I've used the gym since it opened and been fine, no cases there and rarely any in gyms in the country. Tier 3 lockdowns are now allowing gyms to stay open as they were challenged on them closing with the low risk of transmission proven
People are sanitising equipment before and after use, temp checked on arrival and limited numbers. I feel safer there than the supermarket
