South Yorks, West Yorks and Nottingham on the cards for T3 this week?

Speculation tonight from the Times that it could be as early as Tuesday:

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
Could another 7 million more people go into the Tier 3 Very High alert level this week? That is what ministers intend to do, with or without deals with local leaders, they now insist. Greater Manchester, South Yorks, West Yorks and Nottingham all about to be moved up from Tier 2.

That said, progress being made with all of them on achieving deals, with hospitals reporting ever higher covid admission rates. Deals in South and West Yorks look closest, with an announcement expected Tuesday.
Unlike in Manchester, local leaders not holding out for 80% of wages.

Instead, they have a proposal to devolve more money down to councils to support businesses and workers. "There are other ways to skin the cat," one northern figure says. Time also now becoming crucial. The figure adds: "Each day of delay has a cost in lives".

Manchester still proving the hardest nut to crack, but progress being made there too, thanks to Treasury millions. Andy Burnham and No10's Eddie Lister talking again in the morning, with silence from both tonight seen as a good sign. More on @TimesRadio tomorrow after 7am.

Interesting

I really hope not. I’m in West Yorkshire and we’ve been under some kind of restriction for months now. No sign of improvement. I was hoping to see my parents who live 4 hours drive away (was hoping they’d come to visit) but doesn’t look like that’ll be happening now. I haven’t seen them for over 3 months.

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/10/2020 10:06

I hope not. Cases only 240 per 100k in my town and Liverpool is over twice that many.
Completely unwarranted across the whole of West Yorkshire!
I don't see why business should be ruined because people won't stop seeing their families and freinds which is causing the main spread!

jacksparrows · 19/10/2020 10:09

It's over a thousand and riding fast in lots of West Yorkshire so I'm not surprised if it's on tier three very soon.

Flaxmeadow · 19/10/2020 10:14

It isn't just about cases per 100,000. It's also how fast those numbers are rising

Somewhere could have high rates per 100,000 but the numbers have a sustained decrease. Another place might be lower per 100,000 but be rising much more rapidly

Also the availability of hospital beds might play a part

There are places in the Liverpool City Region and in Lancashire which are below that rate.

I’m in West Yorkshire & I’m frankly I’ve had enough. We’ve been in lockdown of some kind since July with zero support from the sodding govmt. This just throws us further to wolves. It’ll destroy our towns & leave people without jobs. But it’s the north, so who gives a shit right?

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 19/10/2020 10:46

West yorks here too and people seem to frankly have had enough now.

RunningKatie · 19/10/2020 13:18

South Yorks here. We have a half term holiday booked, it starts on Saturday and has been booked for a year. That area is currently Tier 1, so we can go if we're still Tier 2.
I wish that a decision would be made soon and then stuck to.
First world problem and all that but we seem to have been swept under the carpet here.

loobyloo1234 · 19/10/2020 13:26

@RunningKatie

The Government have said don't travel to higher tier areas unless its essential travel though?

loobyloo1234 · 19/10/2020 13:27

(so you can't go from Tier 2 to Tier 1 and back again)

Beeeees · 19/10/2020 13:31

South Yorks only just got restrictions so it seems a bit unfair to go to tier 3 without seeing if tier 2 made a difference. They waited too long to bring any in tbh.

PickAChew · 19/10/2020 13:34

I've seen nothing about not travelling between tiers unless one has a specific travel ban - ie "must not" rather than "should not"

WhatHaveIFound · 19/10/2020 13:40

West Yorkshire here too. Really fed up with the fact that I can't visit my parents indoors as i've only seen them a handful of times since March. October is not great for sitting in their garden and my dad is in a wheelchair so he can't get out much to meet elsewhere Sad

RunningKatie · 19/10/2020 13:41

If in Tier 2 you can go on holiday, but not just into Tier 3 area. At least that's what we've been told so far!
Not getting the suitcases down just yet.
The BBC has nothing online about the current talks. I do feel "the north" has become one big lump despite the regional variations.

RationalOne · 19/10/2020 13:45

It's not really surprising going on the number of people on here that say they cannot be bothered to follow guidelines anymore 😕

Glenthebattleostrich · 19/10/2020 13:49

Another in West Yorkshire. I'm utterly fed up of the restrictions. My family live in a tier 3 area so no hope of seeing them this side of Christmas having seen them once this year. My 10 year olds anxiety is through the roof as it is and I'm seriously worried about the impact a further lockdown will have on her.

Rosehip10 · 19/10/2020 15:38

@RunningKatie The advice on travel is "guidance" only. Not legislation.

YawnyOwl · 19/10/2020 15:43

Can you leave a tier 3 area to visit a tier 2? I'm literally on the border...

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2020 17:40

The guidance is you shouldn't. Legally you can.

Sheffield here. I've only just started to feel ok after the last lockdown. Having a hyper ADHD teen who had MH issues from being off school for so long was horrendous

MrsGrindah · 19/10/2020 17:48

I’m in WY and it’s bloody annoying seeing so many people ignore the rules ( the obvious ones, god knows how many people are breaking them under the radar). Then people moan and say it’s not working..then are surprised that further lockdowns are coming.

I’m not saying the Gov has got it right, it’s the arrogance of people who think they can just do their own thing.

Carriemac · 19/10/2020 18:00

Numbers are falling in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire
So I hope they don't put us into tier 3

CoronaIsWatching · 19/10/2020 18:05

The only shocking thing is how readily people accept being told by some clowns in London that they can't see their own family. If you want to see your parents then just go and use your own common sense/judgement, regardless of what tier bollocks you're in.

CoronaIsWatching · 19/10/2020 18:08

I’m not saying the Gov has got it right, it’s the arrogance of people who think they can just do their own thing

Including many MP's and Gov advisers Hmm
