DS has a temp of 38.6. No cough and obviously we don't know if he's lost his taste of smell. He's sleepy and grumpy and just not himself. He won't take any calpol because it keeps making him throw up.

The drs won't see him until his results come back and the hospital seems a little extreme. The GP on the phone said that he "didn't sound ill enough" because he was whinging in the background while I was on the phone.

I know we're luck to have been able to get a test but are results even reliable at this age? My poor boy. I feel like he would have been seen with that temp if it wasn't for this bloody virus?

Does Calpol normally make him sick? When was his test? Is he usually at nursery? (Where he possibly caught whatever bug he has).

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 14:39

He hasn't had calpol since his immunisations so I couldn't say for sure, he couldn't take antibiotics without throwing up when he was younger. He's in isolation from nursery. There were cases there. He's had no contact with anyone else for 13 days.

We're just leaving for his test now, it's at 3.

Breathe. Has he had calpol? I wouldn't get a doc appointment for that temp providing calpol is bringing it down and he is keeping up his fluids.

DownWhichOfLate · 15/10/2020 14:42

The vomiting might be a gag reflex. Are you using a syringe? Try a spoon and small amounts. But you will need to wait 4 hours even if the last lot made him sick. It could be another virus etc. Good luck with the test.

Crockof · 15/10/2020 14:42

Sorry didn't read. Give the boy some calpol, it might not make him sick

niceupthedance · 15/10/2020 14:43

As long as he's drinking and weeing I wouldn't panic. Poor baby I hope he feels better soon

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 15:12

He doesn't get on with the syringe at all. We tried to give him 1ml at a time from a spoon but it didn't work. He threw up.

He won't drink water but he's still drinking formula which is good.

I have no idea how you're supposed to swab a baby's tonsils. This isn't going well.

OP posts:
toastfiend · 15/10/2020 15:34

When I took my little boy (20 months so older) they said they were advising parents of young children just to do the nose not tonsils as tonsils are very difficult with small children. Is that an option for you, perhaps?

With regards to temperature, I know how scary it is, but I wouldn't expect a GP appointment for a temp of 38.6 unless there were other, more severe symptoms. How is he otherwise? Apart from the Calpol vomiting. Is he eating and keeping down his formula? It's high, but not dreadfully so, and babies often spike high temperatures over minor things that an adult wouldn't. I sought a GP appointment when DS' temp went up to 40+ when he was about 11 months, pre-Covid, and wouldn't come down much with Calpol. They saw him, but were very blasé about it "just being a respiratory infection" as he was drinking and breastfeeding happily, and he was absolutely fine in a matter of days. When he went for his Covid test recently he'd had a temp of 39.5 the day before, 38ish when we went for the test, totally back to normal by the next day, and a negative test and not a sign he'd been ill apart from a mildly snotty nose, it was just a weird cold-y thing that he subsequently shared with me.

I completely understand the anxiety, I still get it terribly, as they're so precious and this is a horrible time, but I don't think your GP surgery are being unreasonable for not seeing him, and try to bear in mind that it's more than likely to be one of the myriad of other viruses flying around at this time of year, rather than Covid. Hope he's ok and doing the test isn't too bad for you all. I found it upset me more than DS and he soon got over his outrage about it with a cuddle.

Dawnlassie · 15/10/2020 15:48

I would be more bothered about excess tiredness than the temperature. Try and ensure they are getting enough fluid and monitor their wee wees. Hope all goes well.

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 16:20

I called them over for help and they told me I didn't need to do a tonsil swab but they didn't tell me that in advance.

It's done to the best of my ability, if I don't get accurate results we'll all just keep isolating because I can't do that again.

He's just not himself and I don't know where he would have got a bug from just now. He hasn't left the house in almost 2 weeks.

If he's drinking formula can you put the calpol in there? That's what I used to do for my boys. I hope he's better soon Thanks

Mindymomo · 15/10/2020 16:52

Is he teething, mine always got a temperature then.

OpheliasCrayon · 15/10/2020 17:04

I wouldn't be taking my kids to the Dr for that lovely. I know it's scary when this sort of thing happens, especially if it's your first kid. But try your best to give him calpol. If he won't keep him cool (but not too cold and don't do anything like put him into a cold bath that's not good for him) and don't panic. Make sure he drinks stuff and keeps hydrated.
My youngest had this last week. She was pretty miserable for 5 days, didn't eat and was sick a lot but she's fine now. (Tested negative).

acatcalledcatto · 15/10/2020 17:13

Hope he's better soon xx

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 17:16

Is it ok to mix calpol with formula? That would make life a lot easier.

Oh yes, you absolutely can. Calpol mixes with anything really. You can also do this with antibiotics as well if they're not going down (if your LO ever has to be on them and can't stomach them).

EvilPea · 15/10/2020 17:20

I used to mix calpol with formula, petit filous, milkshake. Anything I could hide that flavour in for my eldest as she was the same. It was a nightmare!
I hope he’s feeling better soon.

nitsandwormsdodger · 15/10/2020 17:23

Worst case scenario its covid and I think my 3 month old had that - all fine , babies not bday affected
Keep an eye out for sepsis symptoms , nursery babies get lots of bugs 111 if worried

stardance · 15/10/2020 17:29

Try not to panic about the temperature. That's not a dangerously high temperature (for the majority of children anyway.) I wouldn't imagine a GP would want to see him even without Covid to consider, unless there were other symptoms.

Have you tried ibuprofen instead of calpol? He might tolerate that better perhaps?

choosername1234 · 15/10/2020 17:57

You might find paracetamol suppositories easier. Kids don't have the same "social hang ups" about this route of medicine administration as we adults do. Quick, painless and actually more effective than oral

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 18:05

I'll give the calpol in formula route a go first when he wakes up. He had a bottle earlier and then cuddled in with his dad while I finished off working. I'm just done now and heading downstairs to see how he is.

OP posts:
SandysMam · 15/10/2020 18:09

Yes yes to previous poster, get the GP to prescribe paracetamol suppositories over the phone (you will need his weight). They pop up surprisingly easily Shock
Hope he recovers quickly Flowers

borageforager · 15/10/2020 18:09

Paracetamol suppositories are very very useful!

How long has he had a temperature?

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 18:12

He woke from his morning nap around 12 and we noticed then that he had a temperature so about 6 hours now
