DS has a temp of 38.6. No cough and obviously we don't know if he's lost his taste of smell. He's sleepy and grumpy and just not himself. He won't take any calpol because it keeps making him throw up.

The drs won't see him until his results come back and the hospital seems a little extreme. The GP on the phone said that he "didn't sound ill enough" because he was whinging in the background while I was on the phone.

I know we're luck to have been able to get a test but are results even reliable at this age? My poor boy. I feel like he would have been seen with that temp if it wasn't for this bloody virus?

One of my DC is sick with calpol, fairly normal I think. Try to hide it, if he still won't take it just make sure he's keeping hydrated.

TheChineseChicken · 15/10/2020 18:16

Don’t panic, just give something to reduce his temperature. 9 month old DS had a temperature for several days a couple of weeks ago and had to have a covid test. It was negative. He was pretty under the weather for a few days but then it passed and he was fine. No other symptoms. I’m sure it’s a similar thing in your son’s case

TheChineseChicken · 15/10/2020 18:17

Right at the end of the illness he got a little red rash on his tummy, which a GP friend was a good indication that he would be feeling better. And they were right

In my experience little children quite often have temperatures, it’s scary but very rarely is anything serious.

OpheliasCrayon · 15/10/2020 18:28

Give it a very good shake so it's properly mixed up in the milk or else it can just kinda sink to the bottom

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 18:35

His breathing is a bit noisier too now. He seems to be breathing through his mouth though so I'm not sure if that's why.

Not to worry you but keep an eye on his symptoms and temperature. Children can get very ill really quickly, and any breathing issues are concerning. Look up red flags on the sepsis trust to keep an eye on any of those, and go with your gut if you feel he is becoming more unwell. Use 111 or go to hospital if you are concerned. Better to be safe.

bluCoconutty · 15/10/2020 18:53

We use the six plus calpol and just work out the dose it’s double the strength so you can give half the volume we have to for our baby as she has bad reflux and can’t cope with the bigger volume with the infant calpol

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 18:53

He's also still shattered despite sleeping the majority of the day but I told the dr that earlier and she wasn't concerned.

Try mixing the calpol with Ella fruit purée - worked a treat with our LO

40PlusTTC · 15/10/2020 18:58

When he breathes are the muscles between or under his ribs sucking in? That’s a sign they are struggling to breath and might need A&E. Noisy breathing on its own is not too much to worry about.

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 19:29

Didn't like the calpol formula. Just spat it out. GP from NHS 24 is calling me back within the hour. He just isn't right.

lifesalongsong · 15/10/2020 19:35

It's awful when your baby is ill but run of the mill bugs haven't gone away, if covid didn't exist would you be worried by this?

Ime small children can go down quickly but also bounce back just as fast. Easier said than done I know but I'd let him sleep, feed him when he's hungry and grit your teeth until it passes.

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 19:36

He's so sleepy. I think that's worrying more than the temp now. He's slept most of the day and would go back to sleep now. He's also got a good set of lungs on him normally but he sounds really weak and whingy.

pinkgin85 · 15/10/2020 19:55

I think I would try 111 again OP, I would if it were me.

carly2803 · 15/10/2020 19:56

hugs OP

"magic milk" is the best (whack some calpol in that formula or whole milk age depending)!

he will be fine. Sure its not teeth? kids are tired andcranky with the teeth too

SD1978 · 15/10/2020 20:00

For next time- get some recall panadol- saves all the vomiting issues. Wanting to sleep because he's unwell is pretty normal- we do as adults to, but only get freaked out when kids do. He's still drinking pretty well from what you're saying, which is great, and if he has a cold he will be mouth breathing- if his sinus/ nose is blocked. You can use nasal saline spray from the chemist, or overnight, use a quarter teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, and use a cotton wool ball to drip in a few drops to each nostril. You're always more aware with kids breathing when they breathe through their mouth, because they are naturally nose breathers good luck with the call back- I know you're worried, but it all sounds not too bad from what you're describing at the moment

SD1978 · 15/10/2020 20:01

Rectal panadol even! And @carly2803 - teething doesn't cause higher fevers- usually a sign of teething and something.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 15/10/2020 20:01

I know it's scary but 38.6 is not a huge temperature (I've seen it many times.) It could be COVID or could be slapped cheek or any other random virus. Whenever they get a temp my main concern is to make sure it's not meningitis, I wouldn't be concerned about COVID to be honest.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 15/10/2020 20:03

How quickly is he breathing? Try counting his breaths in a minute. There's a level over which you need to seek help but helpfully I can't remember it (bit google!)

Mylittlesandwich · 15/10/2020 20:04

He was up to 38.8 at last check when 111 asked me to check. If nothing else when maybe the GP will be able to prescribe some suppository paracetamol so his temp will be under control and he should be more comfortable.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 15/10/2020 20:05

Sorry OP no real advice but hope he’s ok Flowers

SD1978 · 15/10/2020 20:27

@Mylittlesandwich - you can buy rectal, paracetamol over the counter at the chemist

whereisthejoy · 15/10/2020 20:28

My daughter had a temp of 39.4 about a month ago. Giving her calpol was a nightmare (she's just 2). Anyway the test was negative Smile

(We have since contracted covid from a friend but her temp was pretty mild).

Good luck and keep us posted. He will be completely fine whether positive or not x

doireallyneedaname · 15/10/2020 20:31

My baby had a fever of 38.5 with a cold recently and it can be perfectly normal. Try not to worry. Even if it is Covid, babies are pretty safe.
