Key worker discounts

I went to buy my daughter some clothes today. There was a large clear sign that said 20% discount to key workers.
I got to the till and showed my school pass as I work for a school with children with SEN.

The lady at the till said ah no this is for NHS only. I said "there's nothing at all on the poster that said you needed a blue light card"

She said it's aimed at people that worked all the way through the main lockdown.

I said "I did!" Looking after key workers children mainly from the NHS.

It's bonkers that all these places state they do Key worker discounts yet when you ask about them. Their definition of key worker is very narrow. What about the supermarket workers, the vets, the bin men! Without all those people the country would have not carried on.

Rant over.... I will step down from my soapbox!

YANBU, if it was for NHS workers only then the sign should have said that.

Mrsjayy · 15/10/2020 13:24

They really should have made it clear with the blue light scheme or whatever, that's a shame they made such a fuss.

Buttybach · 15/10/2020 13:54

I felt a right dickhead for asking!
The woman next to me had a blue light card and said it was awful as she couldn't have worked without the education hubs!

I had the same in new look a few months ago. It said key workers and then in tiny print it says blue light card only.

20% may seem a piddling amount to some but my husband has been on a pay cut for months despite working full time. And as I had surgery at the start of the year I was on sick pay for 5 months so the pay cut couldn't have come at a worse time.

It seems like they are very selective in believing who a key worker is.

Yeah, none of the key worker perks or discounts ever apply to education staff. I don’t know why they don’t just say “NHS only”.

Mrsjayy · 15/10/2020 13:59

I would email the company and ask them to make it crystal clear.and say how embarrassing it was. I honestly think some retailers have cottoned onto the phrase "keyworkers" and plastered it all over to look good.

TicTacTwo · 15/10/2020 14:02

Yanbu

Essential retail staff were key workers too. Without shops like chemists and supermarkets we would have been screwed.

Hobbesmanc · 15/10/2020 14:02

It also excludes home care workers, support workers, frontline volunteers etc. Very unfair that NHS admin and none frontline staff can access it but a Dom Care worker who has kept dozens of people safe through Covid can not

Buttybach · 15/10/2020 14:48

It's just unfair all round! If it said NHS staff only I wouldn't have asked.
But so many people took one for the team so to speak during the first lockdown.
It just smacks of virtue signalling.
Don't get me wrong the NHS definitely deserve lots of support they have done so much. But please consider others too!
